Twins Killings

Santana Now a Met

It appears as if the Johan Santana sweepstakes have now ended. “USA Today” has reported here that the Twins will send the former two-time Cy Young winner to New York for Carlos Gomez, Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra, and Kevin Mulvey.

The deal is currently pending Santana’s approval and the two sides agreeing on a contract extension.

For those not familiar with the players the Twins will be receiving, here are some brief scouting reports I recently put together on my personal baseball and prospect blog while analyzing the Mets’ farm system:

Deolis Guerra, RHP: Has a very raw talent that will begin to be solidified as he gets older and gets more work in. Large frame at 6’5” and 200 lbs with a mid-90’s fastball, plus change-up, and improving curve. It is crucial the Mets (now Twins) don’t move too fast with this kid and just let him develop as he has all the potential in the world.

Carlos Gomez, OF: Gomez looks to be an offensive threat due to his aggressive hitting approach and lighting quick speed. Incredibly fast and will wreak havoc at the top of the lineup. He has shown a lot of talent in the outfield especially with this strong arm and excellent ability to cover a lot of ground.

Kevin Mulvey, RHP: Mulvey has two solid pitches including a fastball (90-92 mph) and a changeup (82-84 mph which looks the same as his fastball coming out of his hand with very good movement). He also has a curveball and slider but neither are effective enough yet as an out pitch. It’s tough to tell exactly how he will progress, but I see him as a possible middle of the rotation type guy depending on if he can solidify a third pitch.

Stay tuned to “Twins Killings” for more as this story develops.

I don’t care how good these prospects are, any trade not including a for sure major league player is a stupid one if you ask me.

Plus I’m sick of all these trades with the f’n Mets.

Bill Smith, shame on you. Have fun watching fatass Cuddyer run around in center field.

Wow, I’m going to have to write an article about a certain Twins owner…

Lets just say I’m disappointed - not the trade I was hoping for from the Mets - Bill Smith caved on this one

The best pitcher in baseball in the prime of his career, and we don’t get 1 established player. Unbelievable.

I am disappointed that if we didnt get an established player that we would have at least rec’d Martinez back. Gomez should be our center fielder at this point but still.

One of you other guys can do the official write up and your feelings on it as I feel a little empty inside at the moment.

I’m just happy I reported this story on here even before ESPN.com did. Feather in my cap!

This season will be a huge disappointment. Losing Santana and Hunter in the same offseason is unacceptable. Especially with a new ballpark coming.

Today, I am ashamed to be a Twins fan.

I really can’t believe they went for this. Smith should be run out of town! You trade the best left-handed pitcher of this generation (so that might be a stretch but he’s damn good) and in return you get an outfielder who MAY be able to handle major league pitching, a 5th starter and two C/D prospects? That’s ridiculous

Actually Guerra is a B+ prospect.

Kfan is really interesting right now. Lots of mixed reviews on this trade.

I would not be mad at the Twins here. Santana clearly wanted out. I thought they did okay in this deal. The best part is that he is not around to cause problems, and that he is not pitching in an another league. You don’t want a guy on your team that does not want to be there.

How does you pass on either Phil Hughes, Jon Lester or Jacoby Ellsbury for this collection of non-stars?

Bill Smith overplayed his hand, plain and simple. He expected the Red Sox and Yanks to get into a bidding war, and his dragging out of this deal bit him in the end. This is an unacceptable amount of talent to recieve for the best pitcher in baseball.

I’d take Hughes or Ellsbury straight up for Santana before I’d rubber stamp this deal. I feel sorry for Twins fans who hope these guys become decent major leaguers.

You must strike quickly now a days in the trade market, and trying to play each side against each other hardly works. The best moves happen quickly, and this is a failure Mr. Smith. No other way to say it.

I know this doesn’t look so good now but its better than letting him walk into the free agency for a couple draft picks. Plus Gomez and Guerra could become stars

So the Twins went from asking

Phil Hughes + Melky Cabrera + Ian Kennedy + another solid prospect from the Yankees

    to getting this?

Hell even Phil Hughes + Melky Cabrera + Jeff Marquez beat this one by a good bit. or the Boston deal ( Lester + Lowrie + Masterson + Crisp )

unbelievable. unless they see something awsome in Guerra and think they can teach Gomez how to hit a major league pitch.

almost all of the guys they’re getting have some major question marks.

Gomez: speed is great… only if you could do something with it… and Gomez havn’t shown the later part yet. he hasn’t hit at all in his brief major stint and was only mildly succssful in the minors at getting on base.

Guerra : all the talent in the world. but at lot of it is in projections, he doesn’t consistently throw in the mid 90s. but “probably” will because of his age and size. his results is mediocare but gets tons of extra points for age.

Mulvey: pretty decent prospect and almost ready. but nothing particularly special. he’s not likely to flop but also not likely to dominate.

Humber: see Mulvey, but he use to be a lot better. unfortunately injury has robbed him of a lot of his talent.

I really don´t understand this statement:

This deal was much better than what the Yankees and the Red Sox offered, which was nothing.

I get it that the Twins had to do a deal, but this package is infirior to any other one presented by both Yankees and Red Sox. The didn´t get any ML player.

This was a terrible deal. I’d like to comment by saying that this was a terrible deal. I’m terribly disappointed by this terrible deal.

It’s like giving somebody a brand new $100 bill for a crisp $20 bill, a crumpled up five, a nickel, and a token worth half a credit for the Galaga game at the AMC arcade in the Southdale Mall.

I feel very bad for Twins fans out there.

As a Marlins fan, I feel your pain. Well, sort of.

When they have a firesale they actually get pretty good talent in return.

This is just a completely lopsided trade.

I hate to see small market teams lose players, but theres at least a little satisfaction when they get top prospects in return.

It’s a shame that your GM reacted so quickly and got hardly anything in return for one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Oh well, life goes on. Keep your heads up Twins fans.

There’s no reason the Twins should be small market. Owner Carl Pohlad has more money than any MLB owner, and ranked 54th in the world in wealth according to Forbes. His net worth is 2.8 billion dollars!

Read my piece on this deal, Twins fans have to blame their owner.
