Twins Killings

Livan and Carlos star in victory

Livan Hernandez and Carlos Gomez have stood out so far for the Twins’ success in this young season.

Last night, they showed why. Hernandez pitched a complete game, and Gomez hit for the cycle, which resulted to the Twins’ 13-1 blowout over the White Sox.

Gomez has simply been good so far. Sure he has lot of work to do such as having patience at the plate, but right now, the Twins have to like what he brings to the table. He finds a way to get on a base when he has to. He can stretch a single into a double. He steals bases often. He has done well in hitting the ball. He also has done a good job of playing defense at centerfield.

He is a spark plug to this team’s offense, and he showed that by hitting a leadoff home run.

In the fifth inning, he hit a RBI triple to give the Twins a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh inning, Gomez hit a RBI double to extend the team’s lead to 7-0.

In the ninth inning, he got a single.

If the Twins center fielder continues to play like this, there has to be consideration for him to be in the All-Star Game. If nothing else, Twins fans should definitely vote for him in their All-Star ballots.

As for Hernandez, what else can Twins fan say about him? This blogger wrote that it was a desperate signing for a rotation that looked like it was going to be bad this year. Not only has the starting rotation done good, but Hernandez has pitched like a stopper. He wins games every time he is out on the mound.

The thought was that he would struggle against the teams in the American League, but so far so good for him.

He has worked fast out on the mound. He is throwing strikes. He has done a good job of getting pitchers to ground out often. He just look like a different pitcher than he was in recent years. One can credit Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson for finding a flaw in Hernandez, and having Hernandez to figure it out.

Last night, he did all of those things to help him get a complete game. He made it look easy out there, and in the middle of the game, the White Sox looked frustrated in going up against him.

It’s May right now so one has to get the feeling that this is not a carbon copy of Ramon Ortiz. It looks like Hernandez is going to be with the club for the rest of the season, and he has earned it with the way he is pitching.

Those two certainly gave the Twins a huge pick-me-up after a frustrating performance Tuesday night.
