Scratching and Clawing
Two rain delays, a 3 run deficit early, and a late rally by the Bronx bombers was not enough to stop the White Sox from scratching and clawing their way to a victory last night.
It took a total of four hours and twenty-eight minutes to complete the victory, but those that stuck around at U.S. Cellular Field were rewarded with another late-inning victory, and yet another game-winning hit by “late inning” Joe Crede.
My argument for shipping Crede away, (so the club can get something back for him and make room for young slugger Josh Fields) is losing momentum with each late-inning clutch hit. I have been saying that his improved performance is great for the Sox because it improves his trade value, but he is making it harder and harder for me to stick with that thought.
I guess it boils down to whether or not you believe this team can win it all this year. It would be a shame if they hold on to Crede and miss the playoffs, because he will most likely end up somewhere else, and the Sox will get nothing in return. All things considered, if the right deal is made, I would still be in favor of shipping him off to better this team for the future.
Whenever I start thinking of this club’s near future, I have trouble being optimistic because of the depleted farm system and aging players on the current roster. Not that it is all that important to worry about right now, (because a lot of things can change) but…- Five years down the line, who will be the stars on this team? Nick Swisher? Josh Fields? Gavin Floyd? John Danks? It’s hard to say, but re-stocking the farm system has to be a good idea, right?
As far as the current club, I continue to be impressed with their grit. Last year, they would have lost that game last night. No doubt about it.
The AL Central is better than most will give credit, and I feel good about the chances that the SouthSiders stay in the mix all year long. It sure is a lot more fun to watch baseball all summer when you aren”t planning for next year>
