Seven In a Row, But the Twins Won’t Slow
The White Sox have won seven games in a row and they completed a three game sweep of the Indians in exciting fashion last night with a walk-off home run by A.J. Pierzynski.
They pounded out five runs against reigning AL Cy Young winner C.C. Sabathia in the victory and improved their record to 49-35.
The problem is, the Twins won’t go away.
I have stated that I don’t think the Twins will be in the mix down the stretch, but it is now July 3rd, and they are only two and a half games back.
I will stick to my guns and continue to predict that the White Sox and Tigers will be fighting for the AL Central title, but the Twins shouldn’t be ignored. For some reason those pesky Twins find a way to win every year.
The SouthSiders will try to improve upon their seven game winning streak tonight as they begin a four game set against the A’s at home. Meanwhile, the Twins are off today, and then they get their chance to tee off against the sinking Indians. The Tigers will start a four game series tonight in Seattle.
Even if the White Sox lose their grip on first place, the AL Central is sure to be one of the most exciting races to watch this summer.

Maybe I’m looking at this the wrong way, but it could be a good thing that the Twins keep beating the Tigers. Be honest with yourself, which team are you more afraid of? The Tigers were really beginning to heat up, hopefully this deflates them a little bit. Obviously you don’t want the Twins to keep rolling, but (even after all these years) I have trouble taking them seriously for the long haul.

Looking at the remaining schedules and how many times the teams play each other from here on out, it’s almost impossible for the AL Central to become an exciting race because, simply put, someone’s going to just have to keep on losing. My money’s on Detroit falling off in the near future.

I definitely see the Tigers as a bigger threat, but the Twins just won’t lose. I am guessing they will have a bad two week stretch at some point, and they won’t be able to recover.
The Tigers are definitely a scarier team though. Especially if they land another starter before the trade deadline. You know the Indians won’t deal Sabathia within the division, but there are some other decent arms out there.

Jay:
I am starting to think this might be the Twins’ year. They certainly have surprised me. I had them done after that Chicago series. I did not think the starters have it in them to do well considering that they are learning on the job. They have really become good pitchers ever since interleague play. They just know how to win like tonight’s game.
I wrote an op-ed story on Detroit for Twins Killings this week. I talked about how Detroit needs another starter if they are going to be a playoff team. Problem is that they got nothing to offer. They were rumored to sign Freddy Garcia, and he can help. I just don’t think the Tigers are going to be in this.
The White Sox and the Twins are the two best teams in the division.

I am not willing to stick a fork in the Tigers yet, but they are a bad 2 week stretch from being out of it.
