Nelson Retires a Yankee
From YES Network:
The New York Yankees announced that right-handed pitcher Jeff Nelson - who earlier Friday was signed by the Yankees and invited to Spring Training - has announced his retirement.
It’s tough to ignore Nelson’s contributions to our championship run of the late ’90s. He and Mike Stanton were the last really reliable bridge to Mariano Rivera. But, those were the days when Torre trusted more than two guys in his bullpen, so he didn’t completely burn out his best setup men.
I’m rather curious about the Spring Training invite. Why, if he was to pull a sign-and-retire move, would he be invited? A formality, maybe?

The list of non-roster invitees is out.
One interesting name?
Todd Pratt.

I just don’t think they want to put more unneccessary strain on Sanchez then they have to. I think they’re content letting him get all his work in at AAA, and I don’t think they’ll be calling him up (just a hunch).
Eitherway, at least there are guys like Whelan, Ohlendorf, and of course Hughes & Tabata to get some action out of:P
And Pratt isn’t a bad backup catcher, I guess they’re going to see if he’s got enough stuff left to compete for the backup role.

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_contract.aspx?sport=MLB&id=3329 Mark Teixeira
Mark Texeira
01/17/06: Signed two-year, $15.4 million contract. 2007: $9.4 million, 2008: Arb. Eligible, 2009: Free Agent
I believe his contract states that he’s arbitration eligible after 2008 and a free agent in 2009. So if he declines arb, the Rangers get an A (most likely) draft pick as compensation to whichever team he signs with
Texeira can still decline arbitration in 08, but whoever signs him will lose a first rounder. If he accepts (or signs an extension) then no Texeira with yankees.

Sanchez is on the 40 man roster, so he will be at Spring Training without being a non-roster invitee. It is a little surprising that Kevin Whelan, who pitched in A+ last year was invited to Spring Training and JB Cox, who dominated AA isn’t invited. I don’t think he’s on the 40 man roster, but it he is on the roster, then that would explain that.

Todd Pratt? Interesting…

Hmm, I wasn’t aware that Sanchez was on the 40 man roster. And I also agree about Cox. He deserves a chance. I think he’s near MLB ready as is. There’s no harm in letting him get a chance during ST.

Eric-Maybe JB Cox will get the invite that Nelson obviously wont be taking. I was suprised to see Cox not on the list as well.
I am glad to see that we have invited some of the guys we got in the RJ trade. It will give us a chance to take a look at what we got and truely evaluate them. Just because AZ thought of them as C prospects doesnt mean thats how we will see them.

Do you know who’s the Catcher calling behind plate and catching for Sanchez? It was Kottaras - former san diego catching prospect who got traded with Redsox with David Wells.
Kottaras is good signal caller behind the plate.. The Redsox got a steal

Sanchez was nasty in the inning…..great strike out pitch on that first and third batter.

JB-Thanks for the Humberto vid! I was looking for one since the trade. That was awasome.

I find it very odd that JB Cox isn’t invited. Perhaps he’ll be added to the 40-man, as there are only 39 men on it right now.
And JB, Tiexiera cannot decline arbitration after the 2007 season. He won’t have the service time to become a free agent, so he must accept arbitration. He’ll be a free agent after the 2008 season.
