Pettitte To Rocket: Join Me in Pinstripes

The inevitable has been realized. Earlier today, Andy Pettitte was re-introduced as a New York Yankee. During the press conference, Pettitte expressed that he wants Roger Clemens to rejoin the Yankees in 2007. When asked about Clemens joining the Yankees Pettitte responded, “Does he know that I would love that? Of course”. This development is hardly a surprise to many that have followed the whispers surrounding Pettitte’s return to the Bronx, most assumed that Clemens was soon to follow Pettitte back in pinstripes. Unfortunately, Pettitte believes reporting to “Spring Training would probably be out” of the question for Clemens.

The thought process involved with bringing Clemens back to New York is all too convoluted for my tastes. Personally, I was insulted when Clemens left the Yankees for the Astros, months after he led everyone to believe he pitched his last game in the big leagues. He just seems like a big fake, and extremely narcissistic with an out of control ego. Just look at the contract he signed last year with Houston, totalling $22,000,022, to mirror his uniform number of 22, and it was also no coincidence his return was on June 22. Why add another ego to this team? I’m not sure how I’d react to Clemens coming back.

There’s so many questions you have to mull over about a possible Clemens return. Why should Clemens get an exception to come back in June, four months later than everyone else? Why should the Yankees allow Clemens to leave the team on road trips to spend time with his family, unlike everyone else? How much money would it cost? What if Clemens can’t work the kinks out of his game until the All-Star break? What if Clemens’ recent success is a product of being in the NL?

Rather than bringing back Clemens in June, the Yankees should bring up Philip Hughes. A (all signs pointing towards) dominant pitcher without all of the questions and dollar signs that a Clemens return would bring.

Im not sure how i would react if the yanks signed clemons. I mean he is agruebly the best pitcher to live but i would like the yanks to move on and give the spot to one of the young arms. I like clemons the pitcher but he has a piss poor ego/attitude. Hes the Shaq of baseball, he believes he so good he that everyone should pamper to his every need and he will just “turn it on” when he needs to. This is not the kind of attitude we need on this team. We need players who want to fight from the first pitch of the season to the last. We need hungry players who want to show what their worth and get to the big stage. Of course if they do bring in clemons i will cheer him on but i think our inhouse options should get the chance they deserve.

We need the rocket. RIght now our 5th starter is a guy who hasn’t pitched in a year (pavano) or a kid who hasn’t thrown anywhere close to the number of innings asked of a ML pitcher (hughes).

Hughs at the earliest will be up after the ASB. We have a ton of young arms who could get a chance. We have to bring them up sometime, i think we just need to have some faith in them.

Karstens proved that he is a gritty guy and knows how to pitch and stay alive out on the diamond. on any other team, he’d be a starter. its not necessary to have a hall of famer as the fifth starter.

Still, i’d welcome the rocket back b/c he’s a great proven arm.

In a way, waiting for Clemens to arrive in June may be a blessing in disguise. It will give Igawa, Pavano, Karsten, Rasner or any other young pitcher a chance to prove themselves. By that time, maybe the Yankees will change their minds about signing Clemens. I agree that maybe Phillip Hughes may be ready to pitch for the big club by mid-season. Anybody that signs Clemens especially for so many millions, is taking a chance that 2007 may be the season when Clemen’s body breaks down as inevitably it will sooner or later, and most likely sooner. It happened to Nolan Ryan.
