Karstens Test Negative & A-Rod’s Boo Crew

* Jeff Karstens had an MRI and CT scan done yesterday, and both came back negative (ESPN Insider required). This does not mean Karstens will jump right back into the starting rotation. The RHP will be labeled day-to-day and his health closely monitored. Tough break for a kid who seemed well on his way toward making the club out of camp. Presumably Darrell Rasner moves up in the pecking order, filling in the hole left open by Karstens’ elbow issue. A month ago, I wrote about Karstens and Rasner as 5th-starter choices should one be needed midseason. Who would have thought their services would be considered so necessary this early - and at the expense of Wang & Pettitte’s health, not Carl Pavano’s.

*
Kevin Lidle, Cory’s twin brother, was in the stands for yesterday’s exhibition game. I saw a clip of Kevin speaking during a charity event held in his brother’s honor recently. He was wearing a Yankee hat and the image was mystical (if not unsettling) because at first glance I really thought it was Cory.

An interesting site has sprung up on the WWW. Thanks to all the Bronx Block readers for their valuable tips, including this “revolutionary” webpage regarding the treatment of Alex Rodriguez. Entitled Project-A13, the site describes itself as an “anti-boos” campaign. Very simply, the page: 1) contends that A-Rod is crucial to the Yankees success; 2) urges Yankee fans to exercise discretion before relentlessly booing; and 3) outlines a possible solution to the A-Rod “predicament.” Just how feasible such a program can be remains a question, but I admit such a grassroots approach to Rodriguez’s plight was something I’ve wondered about for a while. I thought such a movement - either for or against him - would have been established long ago.

Watch, in a week it will come out that A-rod started the site himself.

[…] I updated things a bit after reading the Bronx Block here on MVN.com, where Tony Gicas is talking about Darrell Rasner possibly replacing Jeff Karstens due to an injury. We’ll have to wait an dmonitor this situation to see how it actually unfolds. […]

How bout Pavano today? Looked really good.

The funny thing is, it doesn’t seem like Pavano is really at full effort yet. He seems to be going through the motions a bit - which is to be expected after such a long layoff. If he can remain healthy, I’m not sure you’ll see him at 100% until May. Maybe by then his velocity and breaking pitches will reach their optimal levels. Not to say that Pavano can’t go in the tank in a flash or be hit with injuries yet again. However, a pitcher who is working off a ton of rust could’ve performed a lot worse than what Pavano’s shown thus far.

The louder guys at Yankee games don’t exactly seem like the blog-reading types to me. Imagine the scene in the ninth row.

Fan 1: “So, old chap, what do you think of the online movement to temper the gusto with which we attack young A-Rod?”

Fan 2: (Dumps beer on Fan 1’s head.)

    Just saying.

The thing that impressed me most about Pavano today was his GB/FB ratio of 14/4. If he keeps that up, it may not matter if he can’t strike anyone out. I do think however that he’ll need to miss more bats to reach his true potential, just like Chien Ming Wang might in the future. Still, definitely a positive sign … and a reassuring one given that he’s the Yankees opening day starter.

Thanks so much for posting that Arod site. I think the guy did a really good job with it, who ever he is. I am behind him 100%. Its not so much that I am an Arod fan, I guess you could call me a fan of humanity. I don’t like seeing anyone put down, made fun of (I am thinking of Pavano here) especially one of my Yankees. It totally pisses me off to hear Yankee fans booing Yankees. When you boo them you mess with their heads, and that messes with their game. So besides being discourteous and rude, it is stupid.

I missed the Pavano performance, but I will def take 2ER in 6IP regardless of how he got it, though just curious what was his WHIP like? Any HR’s given up?

I hope A-Rod can keep this chip on his shoulder mentality that he’s playing for a contract for next season rather than just getting to mid-season and just trying to coast to a stop knowing that there will be a sweet release when his stay in NY is over next year

I enjoyed the A Rod page also. I am not sure if he will end his career as a Yankee, or even if he should. I know that he is not the first NY “superstar” to ever get booed.
    Patrick Ewing, Phil Simms anyone?
The one Yank that stands out in recent memory is Jason Giambi, who went from “almost admitted” steroid user to comeback player of the year the next season. Giambi had no bat, had a tumor that may or may not have been linked to steroid use, and had the nerve to tell the front office that he would not go down to the minors, purportedly so he could “work through the problems” he was having.
He just stood in the box and took his licks from the home crowds, the opposing crowds, the opposing pitchers and those wonderful and compassionate folks known as the NY media. Bunch of circle jerking knowitalls who were always picked last for the whiffle-ball team that THEY are.
A-Rod might just be alright here, and he will almost assuredly go down in baseball history as one the very best to ever play the game.
    My $0.02.

When you consider that Roger Maris got booed in NY it is not surprising to see. A-Rod has to get used to it, not make statements that get turned around and blown out of porportion. A-Rod is on pace to be the greatest player/home run hitter in history. He was MVP two years ago and last season most players would give up a limb to have those numbers which fans felt deserving of boos. I expect a great season from him this year and as far as thsoe who chose to boos I wish they would just wear their Mets/Red Sox jerseys/shirts on the outside so we can see them for what they are…
