A-Rod WalkOff Part II
Going into the 9th inning, the Yankees trailed by four runs. They would need five runs to win it but got six instead.
Following two quick outs, the Yankees found themselves eyeing a four-run deficit and two outs already on the board. Josh Phelps started it off with a solo shot. 6-3. Pinchhitting for Wil Nieves allowed Jorge Posada to single. Johnny Damon kept it alive when he earned a walk after pushing the count full. Derek Jeter then singled to leftfield, scoring Posada. 6-4. In another big atbat, Bobby Abreu extended the game by smacking a line-drive into left, scoring Damon. 6-5.
With men on first and second, Cleveland closer Joe Borowski threw a wild pitch, moving the runners up one base. The next pitch would end up about 425 feet in the opposite direction. Alex Rodriguez crushed a 3-run blast to straight-away centerfield, winning the game for the Yankees and giving the upcoming Red Sox series that much more juice. Safe to say that anyone who boos A-Rod in the Bronx is not a Yankees fan.
A-Rod’s April has moved up the meter. From “hot” to “infuego” to “historic.” Thus far his season looks like this: .351 average, 10 homeruns, 26 RBI in 14 games.
- On three straight days a Yankees pitcher has earned the first victory of his young MLB career. Tuesday it was Chase Wright, Wednesday had Kei Igawa, and today it was Sean Henn.
- Eric Wedge may soon be passing the baton to team “adviser” Buck Showalter. I’m not going to complain, but how in the **** does Wedge allow Rodriguez to bat in that spot? The hottest player in the majors up in the bottom of the ninth, down a run and two men on. Following the wild pitch first base was open. Yet the skipper still elected to pitch to Rodriguez. Good luck explaining that one Mr. Wedge.
- In retrospect, how big was Brian Bruney’s performance. After Mike Myers allowed the first two hitters to reach base in the 6th inning, Bruney was called upon in a true “fireman” situation. After putting the first hitter he faced on first and consequently loaded the bases, Bru then put out the fire. Recording all three outs without allowing a run, stranding all three Indians baserunners.
- Melky Cabrera went 2-for-4 today, hopefully a good step toward getting back on track.
- What can you say about Jorge Posada’s start. Filling in for Nieves, Posada ripped another big hit today, increasing his average to .353 on the year.
- According to the multiplying stable of ESPN “experts,” wasn’t Cleveland supposed to run away with the AL Central this year? They were the trendy pick in March, but those same analysts may be backtracking come May.

I guess I’m going to have to take back all those bad things I said about him over the weekend. As he goes so goes the team. But he really can put them on his back can’t he?

I knew this game was going to come down to A-Rod once Damon came up. I could just feel it and I knew he would deliver the big hit again.

The thing that has really changed is that when I saw him standing at the plate with 2 outs, down 1, and needing a single (after the wild pitch) to win the game…. I thought “he’s going to do it.” That is a HUGE change from every previous season where we would see him come up and go “oh god…”
Good for him.

He really looked like he wanted to be at the plate more than anywhere else. Just trying to drive the ball, and and keep the train moving.

Amen Dan(s)
Been backing Rodriguez for a long time and it’s so sweet to see him playing at such an astronomical level. What a way to finish the homestand.

I keep trying to change the photo but it keeps reverting back. That one is way too blurry. :) We need a clear shot of the King of New York — on the MVN’s main page.

This was a great team comeback. Two outs, and Phelps, Damon, Jeter, Abreu and then A-Rod all come up huge. It was not just A-Rod, it was a great team comeback and a great team win.

I love how A rod is enjoying baseball again.Last season he seemed more intrested in being one of the yanks, now he seems like i dont care attitude! I love it!! I have been a big A rod FAN even before he came to the Yankees, and i am happy NY is embracing A rod and Arod is embracing NY.

For all the people that wanted to run Arod out of town, they should be ashamed of themselves. He is going to go down as one of the five best players in the history of the game and people were so quick to run him out of here cause of his postseason struggles even though the whole team has been awful since the 3-0 to the Sox.
People have memory loss and selective memory when it comes to Arod, remember the bad, forget the good.
Last year i was embarrassed when i went to games, and 30, 000 people would boo him, I would sit there with my arod jersey on almost laughing at the lunacy of people booing someone this good.
With the rotation in shambles, Arod is carrying them right now, and when he slows down or fails in the clutch a few times, I hope everyone remembers that he has put this team on his back and carried us in April as 3 starters have been down with injury.

tony,i’ve been sitting back for awhile in order to not over react to the start of the season.i had a conversation with a guy who did not like arod at all in march.i stated that i thought he would have a killer season.let’s all be serious, this thing is stupid.the question now is how do people react when arod becomes mortal.are we going to hear about october and blah blah.well, let me be the first guy once again to say you are full of dung if you go there.by the way,can you curse on this site because i can do better.

Bob..
I am confused, are you trying to say I am “full of dung?”
Or are you telling people in advance that if they do not support ARod through the the guaranteed tougher times then they are fairweather fans. I agree with your second statement, because you can’t just cheer the good times and disappear when times get tough.

It is sad to think that the same guys that were booing him last season are now cheering him since he went on his tear since every player has slumps and I figure the hypocrites will start bashing him again. A-Rod has been and will continue to be, barring injury, one of the greatest baseball players ever.
The Yankees haven’t won a WS since Giambi and Mussina joined the Yankees also but for some reason it is A-Rod’s fault…

I am assuming that the guys booing A-Rod are really closet Mets or Red Sox fans anyway. My suggestion to them is stay home. I would rather have more opportunities to get better seats when I go and take my sons to “cheer” for my team and not witness frustrated pent-up hypocrites who take every dissapointment personally as if it was directed at them.
