Chamberlain strikes out the side in first relief outing

Joba Chamberlain made his bullpen debut tonight for AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and didn’t disappoint.

On 13 pitches (10 strikes), he struck out the side in his only inning of work.

My understanding is that he will rest tomorrow and pitch another inning on Wednesday. He will then be evaluated afterwards.

From Chad Jennings at the SWB Yankees Blog:

He came in to pitch the seventh inning and struck out the side. He hit 99 on the stadium radar three times, and there were pitches that didn’t properly register so he might have done it more than three times. (I’m pretty sure he never threw a fastball 37 mph in his life).

Chamberlain threw 13 pitches, 10 of them for strikes. All three balls came to the first batter he faced (source).

With the rumored acquisition of Eric Gagne and Chamberlain’s impending call-up, the Yankees’ bullpen improves ten-fold. Phil Hughes should also be back on Saturday. The pieces are starting to fall into place.

Is Gagne really a Yankee? Did the Yanks give up Marquez for him?

Yeah it appears the deal on the table is Jeff Marquez, Tyler Clippard, and a lower level prospect TBD..another report said it could be Marquez, the lower level prospect and Jeff Karstens who is set to come of the DL sometime this week.

Lets not forget that our biggest problem is Farnsworth. Yes we’ll be better if we add Gagne and Joba to the pen but Farnsworth has to be moved to make room anyway. I hope we can dump him somewhere. Its 1:21 A.M. right now. They have till 4:00 P.M. to get something done. I hope its true about Gagne but I wont be happy till I know Farnsworth’s out of pinstripes. I know Proctor is popular as well and although I’d like to keep him if we got Betimit for him I’d be happy. But I dont want to dump Proctor and keep Farnsworth. I’d be devistated if that happened. They need to get rid of Farnsworth. Please, CashMan get rid of Farnsworth!

Isn’t that a lot to give up for a 2 month relief pitcher?

If Gagne leaves after one season, the yankees will probably offer arbitration. If he signs else where, they will get 2-3 extra draft picks in next years draft, as Gagne will be an A leve free agent.

    It’s a win-win IMO.

Jeff Marquez was good, but was blocking other guys in the system. Tyler Clippard WAS good, but apparently his mental makeup needs more work because ever since that first MLB game he’s been bad.

We’ll get 1 of the best relievers in the game. If we can sign him to an extension, then we get great bullpen relief. If we wind up losing him, then we get some draft picks. Either way, it’s a win-win IMO. It’s a move we have to make if we want to win now while still keeping our top prospects.

A few of the ESPN guys are reporting that the Red Sox are leading the push to get Gagne. That would suck. We need him more.

Yet ESPN (home or Red Sox homers) fail to mention that:

1.) Boston is on his short list of teams he can refuse to go to

2.) I’ve read on different sources that he stated earlier that he will not go to Boston, period.

And a funny tidbit on MLBtraderumors.com

“The Pirates want Alan Horne from the Yankees for Damaso Marte. Given that Brian Cashman didn’t seem to want to give him up for Gagne, I don’t see this happening.”

Marte, a 1 inning guy, for Horne who looks (at worst) to be a long reliever…gotta love them Pirates.

Its too bad to because Marte would be a great pickup.

Is there seriously no one blogging on the final day of trades?

Cory, who covers the Pirates, doesn’t seem to have a very high opinion of Marte.

Sure, he looks like a badass, but apparently, not so much..

Hey Jim, nice to see someone on here. I’ve watched Marte a lot. He’s good. Not elite. They want way too much for him but he would have been a major upgrade over Meyers.

Buster Olney (I dont know how to spell it) just reported on First Take that the Yankees and Dodgers have agreed on the Proctor/Betemit trade. Medical records are being looked at now. I’m happy to have Betemit. Sad to see Proctor leave. We better get rid of Farnsworth because I dont want to be stuck with him and lose Proctor. I’d have to think CashMan would only pull the trigger on that move first if he knew he had help coming. And I dont just mean Joba.

I like Marte a lot, to be honest. He’s a lefty specialist who actually gets lefties out. A huge upgrade over Myers. However, the Pirates want way too much for him. He’s definitely not worth Horne.

I’d love to get Marte. He has a 1.38 ERA, more than a K per IP, and has given up ZERO home runs this year.

Over Myers? Yeah, I’d take that. I don’t think the Pirates are pricing him as a LOOGY though, more of a regular middle reliever. If we’re just going to use him for 1/3 of an inning at a time, it would be foolish to pay the price of someone who pitches a full inning at a time.

I’d like, no doubt, but for Myers’ role. Not to replace Proctor or either of the other clowns we have pitching the 7th.
