Gagne Deal Near Complete

I’ve heard two versions:

  • Eric Gagne to the Yankees for Tyler Clippard, Jeff Karstens, and a C-level prospect
  • Eric Gagne to the Yankees for Tyler Clippard, Jeff Marquez, and a C-level prospect

Either way, Eric Gagne appears to be on his way to New York to set up for The Sandman. I will update this post when the exact information is announced. Thanks to Dan Benton for the tip.

He’s going to be unrecognizable without that billygoat beard.

Update 1: In case the “Thanks to Dan Benton for the tip” two paragraphs higher is too easily missed, here are the sources of this rumor.

Also, the Proctor for Wilson Betemit deal is still on the table according to Tim Dierkes.

Little icing on the bullpen cake:

Joba Chamberlain struck out the side during his first relief appearance for AAA-Scranton. He knew he’d only get one inning tonight, and made the most of it.

Any chance of an extension? I hate giving up pitchers for a 2-3 month rental.

Dan we need more evidence of this being a done deal, you know I already heard a false rumor that sent NYYFANS into panic mode of Gagne to Boston.. as soon as you get an update please post it.

  6. Mike S. says:

I’d rather give up Marquez than Karstens. Karstens, I feel, could really help as a long man down the stretch. I’d like to see Joba in the 2008 rotation, but replacing Bruney, Proctor and Farnsworth(less) with Karstens, Joba and Gagne is one hell of an upgrade. Maybe a Myers or Villone goes instead of a Bruney or Proctor, who knows. I’m just subbing righties for righties here. It depends on how many lefty relievers they feel they need in the bullpen.

  7. Jim Johnson says:

    July 30th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

Personally, I hope they don’t resign him. I think his shoulder is a disaster waiting to happen and I’d like draft picks.

  8. Brandon says:

    July 30th, 2007 at 8:53 pm

Jim if they don’t resign Gagne it’s like giving prospects for free, these are 3 of our lower prospects for Gagne if true.

I’m just glad it’s not Calzado,Gardner,Jackson or Tabata going here

  12. Jon G says:

I too hope they don’t give away karstens - unless they get an extension from Gagne. A more permanent deal, maybe it’s worth it. But a 2-month rental isn’t worth two top tier prospects, one who’s already had some success at the major league level. Maybe there’s some way to get Farnsworth in there…

I mean, who is going to take Farnsworth? Maybe that basketball team that always loses to the Globetrotters…

  14. Steve says:

I think Karstens is a pitchability guy who projects as a bottom end guy. Plus he seems ready now as a starter for a bad to semi-good team. Plus I dont see as much room on this team in the next couple of years for him. next year the rotation is full. With hughes, wang, mussina, pettitte, clemens, chamberlain. Plus I know its a sin to say but the yankees may need a back up plan to mariano. Im not saying Gagne is it, but for cashman it cant hurt to look.

Marquez has tons more upside than Karstens….

  21. Billy says:

    July 30th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

I heard the rumor of Marquez and Clippard the otherday, so the thought of adding in a level C prospect is a new addition and if anything happens it’ll happen VERY VERY soon, given the deadline. The Rangers were sellers are are trying to stack up some arms…now they’re getting some they like (they’ve especially liked Marquez from what I’ve read). I believe they wanted Marquez because he’s a groundball guy and the worst thing for that team is a flyball pitcher…

  22. Tony Gicas says:

    July 30th, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Marquez has a lot more upside than some give him credit. I’ve seen his sinker produce piles of groundouts in person and though he’s been striking out less of late in Trenton, he’s a legit prospect. Clippard is a legit prospect as well, who is experiencing an atrocious downward spiral currently. If this deal falls into place, baseball fans outside of NY will think it is a terrible move on Texas’ part. A year from now, it could work out a lot better for the Rangers than many originally figured.

  23. JKo says:

    July 30th, 2007 at 9:29 pm

Yeah i remember when Dan Benton covered teh Randy Johnson deal. He was right on long before the deal was ever finished. So when i hear this comes from Dan, I believe it will go down.

  24. Billy says:

    July 30th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Well, if we sign Gagne it could wind up being very good. I mean, imagine how it is to have 2 great closers on 1 team. Plus Chamberlain dominated in the pen tonight, and Vizcaino’s had a sub 2 ERA since the last week of May.

6, 7, 8, 9th innings of potential solid pitching from the pen, meaning we just need the started to go the MINIMUM and keep us in the game to keep us in check for a win.

  25. JKo says:

    July 30th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

Chamberlain is short term bullpen…. He’ll be back starting next year i believe.

What a nice feeling to be in the discussion to get a guy like Gagne. In years past, we weren’t even in the discussion because of our terrible minor league system. Props to Cashman and Newman and guys like Nardi for bringing in and developing these young guys. Personally, I think A level prospects like Horne, Hughes, Jaba, and Jennedy are guys we keep. B level serviceable major leaguer type prospects like Clipp, Marquez, and Karstens we trade for pieces.

Anyway, I heard Jason Stark reported the deal done one ESPN News. I dont know if anyone else heard the same thing or if its legit but thats what I heard.

I hope its true because I think Gagne could be a huge pick up for us. I will really miss Clippard if he’s right though because I think that kid could pitch. I’d rather get rid of Ramerez. Horne is a very good prospect but he’s also had arm problems. I dont know. I know ranking wise those guys are higher but you got to love Clippard. Anyway, I still supose he’s well worth sacrificing for Gagne.

    Cory Humes-

How could you get rid of Dan Benton man? He’s one of the best writers you have at MVN! His percentage for what he reports as done is higher than most on the net. I dont know what happened but as a regular every-day user of MVN I want you to know that we all miss Dan and hope whatever happened can be worked out so he can come home.

Dan was the reason I stuck with this site. We’d have great discussion over the Yankees at Off The Facade, later The Bronx Block. Through that site I learned of the Giant101 section. Now I frequent Father Knickerbocker section as well. Its writers like that who brings readers in that you want on your site.

Thank you for your time. I just wanted to voice the oppinion of a loyal MVNer.

    Sincerely, Gianthinker

    Gianthinker,

This isn’t a discussion that needs to be held in a comments section — if you’d like to talk further, make use of the e-mail link I provided.

I’ll say this much — Dan left The Bronx Block voluntarily to focus his attention on Giants 101 (which I’m fairly sure you read as well). He’s always welcome to write on MVN Baseball, and he knows that. It just so happens that he preferred MVN Football. For what it’s worth, I think our guys do a great job without him — though we’d obviously love to have him around.

I know you’re a long-time commenter, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you think more needs to be said. My door’s always open.

Sorry, too, for the WordPress errors.

Both Peter Abraham and Sports Illustrated seem to be reporting conflicting news and they’re actually sources. As much as some of you might like Dan Benton and Evan Brunell personally, I don’t consider them reliable sources for the inside workings of organizations. That the Yankees are close to a deal for Gagne is nothing more than a rampant internet rumor, which is being talked about mostly on Yankees fan boards. Chances are, the rumor probably started there as well.

Peter Abraham has already come out and said that the Yankees being close to a deal for Gagne is nothing more than an internet rumor. He’s confirmed that the rumor is false with members of the organization.

If you want reliable information, SI.com has just reported that out of all the teams pursuing Gagne, the Red Sox are supposedly the ones with the best offer.

    July 31st, 2007 at 7:21 am

Darrel Rasner and Chris Britton in the bullpen? Hahahahahaha. I’m a Yankee fan, and that’s just diarhea with a keyboard.

How about another fantasy trade. Scott Proctor, Farnsworth, and Jeff Karstens (Who we’ll trade twice b/c this is fantasy world) for Seattle’s Putz.

  48. Jim Johnson says:

    July 31st, 2007 at 8:05 am

    Chris,

I have Karstens OR Rasner in the Proposed Bullpen, depending on whether its Karstens or Marquez that gets traded. Either one of them is a better long man than Henn.

I also expect Britton to get a look over Brian Bruney who throws nothing but 100 mph balls.

Use your head for a few minutes before you start bashing people.

  49. Billy says:

    July 31st, 2007 at 8:22 am

If you ever saw Rasner, you’d agree that he’s got some very good stuff. BUT, his biggest problem is he seems to run out of gas after 4 innings. What to do then? Oh yes, make him a long reliever of course. I think he is the epitome of a long reliever. He knows how to get out of jams, he has good stuff, and he’s shown he can pitch here. His only problem is he’s a 4 inning guy, meaning he doesn’t have enough endurance to be a starter.

  50. damnyankee13 says:

    July 31st, 2007 at 8:29 am

I dont know, but based on what I read here about Gagne’s contract, possible veto of a Boston trade, it may help us as he may not want to pitch in Boston.
Personally, I see some possible static in the pen, 2 legit closers,; ie Gossage and Lyle.
    Hopefully, professionalism takes over.
Now , I believe Gagne will do nothing but make our pen better, but he’s also a health issue.
    Now , thats the negatives.
The positive is if he can adjust to being a setup man, we have a hell of a pen, specially if he’s signs a new contract.
I just hope Cashman is carefull in what he gives up for him.

  51. Billy says:

    July 31st, 2007 at 9:00 am

I think there’s a chance Gagne could enjoy being a setup man for us. The main 1 being…the fans.

Just imagine the stadium going wild for a SETUP man. Gagne won’t get to close, but he’s on the bridge to the closer & will be in a position that we’ve lacked strength with. He could be just as popular as a closer;)

  52. Mike S. says:

    July 31st, 2007 at 9:20 am

Giant: You’d rather get rid of Ramirez? Ramirez could be a nice change of pace (pardon the pun) if mixed in with a Rivera, Joba and Gagne. How better to screw up hitters than by going from someone who throws hard to Edwar’s change or vice-versa. One problem the Yanks have is that Bruney, Farnsworth(less) and Proctor are all alternate versions of the same type of pitcher.

One thing beautiful about the Astros before J.R. Richard’s stroke was that they could go from the hard throwing Richard to Joe Niekro’s knuckler to Nolan Ryan’s heater. Think about it.

Chris: As for Rasner, his ERA when he got hurt was 4.01. Compare that with some other guys. Losing him and Karstens really hurt the Yanks this year. Karstens would have been much better than Igawa in the 5 spot, and Rasner could have helped to stabilize the bullpen a little.

Marquez would be a tough loss, but he is behind Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy and Horne. Wang is just 27. Those are 5 righties already ahead of him, not to mention Mussina returns in 2008. Although Marquez could possibly pass DeSalvo on the depth chart, he could very well be passed by Dan McCutcheon next year. Marquez is 11-6, 3.15 but has only 66 Ks in 117 IP. Hitters are hitting .268 off of him. Wang has been getting by and has become an ace with few Ks with his power sinker. Whether Marquez can translate into another Wang-type pitcher is anyone’s guess.

  53. Mike S. says:

    July 31st, 2007 at 9:22 am

Funny, you must be Red Sox fans in disguise. The source of this was the same 1 who announced Pettitte would be a Yankee a WEEK before anyother person (including Ken Rosenthal and Buster Olney) mentioned it.

Not to mention the Yankees’ offer was a great 1 and they didn’t bend over for the Rangers. Oh yes, that’s clearly what everyone wanted here. I’d rather make no move than give up our future for a rental.

  65. Anthony says:

    July 31st, 2007 at 3:19 pm

It’s not the point Billy. The point is that the headline of the article said that Gagne to the Yankees was nearly complete when in fact it never was. I’m as big a Yankee fan as any of you and to read that and get my hopes up makes this lackluster trade deadline even more agonizing. There’s a simple rule in reporting: don’t print anything unless you know for a fact it is true. And as an adendum to that, certainly DO NOT post anything encouraging about the Yankees when in fact the news is actually beneficial for our arch rivals. Not fair.

  66. Billy says:

    July 31st, 2007 at 3:30 pm

You think this is a site like ESPN or what not? It’s a freaking blog. Most blogs lack credibility, though I think some writers on here dig up good info and are usually right most of the time.
