Don’t Pitchers and Catchers Report Tomorrow?

Let’s put aside all of this Mitchell Report nonsense. On top of all of that, and the fact that tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, I think we’re forgetting the true meaning of February 14th. Tomorrow, pitchers and catchers report to camp. It’s about time! In a very long offseason filled with the Mitchell Report and Johan Santana, the start of the 2008 season is on the horizon.

Maybe I’m bitter because I have nobody to give me flowers, but the only holiday on my mind is when the Yankees rumble into Tampa to prepare for Championship number 27. Can’t you smell the promise in the air? The beginning of something beautiful? I’m looking forward to tomorrow. In less than 24 hours, we’ll all have something baseball relevant to talk about. Good things are about to happen. Stay tuned…

I agree. Thank god that there will be something to talk about besides for the steroids scandal. I plan on having a post up late tonight or early tomorrow outlining the major questions and issues facing the Yankees going into the Spring.

And if you are wondering why we have no post up on the steroid hearings, here is a quote that Jayson Stark has from Rep. Lynn Westmoreland. “Westmoreland questioned what the heck everybody was doing there in the first place, saying it wasn’t Congress’ role to investigate individual players and that “if we called everyone who was accused of using steroids before this committee, we’d have to shut this place down.” Amen to that.”

So sick of these hearings all week! Just to make a quick point on it though: Regardless who’s right and who’s wrong(Clemens or that other stool pigeon McNamee) I LOST all respect for Andy Pettitte! Anyone who RATS out his own father and dear friend is a disgrace!!

Just to make a quick devil’s advocate remark back on it though: What would you do in Pettitte’s case, Rob?

  9. Moshe Mandel says:

I think Pettitte and his father probably decided that this was the best course of action. And Pettitte had no choice but to be a rat, what was he supposed to do, perjure himself and go to jail?
    Thanks OTG for the congrats.

I am so sick (and tired) of anything that ends with the words “hearing” or “scandal”.

Enough, already. Play ball, for the love of Jeebus.

Do you think I can ask Congress for a refund of the tax dollars that they’ve wasted on this nonsense?

Pettitte’s now asked to show up to ST a few days late. He’s clearly fazed by all of this and the questions haven’t even started.

Brett - Andy Pettitte admitted his own usage, there is NO need at all to bring Roger Clemens or anyone else involved for that matter regardless who’s if Congress or anyone else is asking! Even if he took the 5th people are going to believe what they want about Roger! Apologize for using it and leave it at that! Anyone who chooses to squeal on there best friend because they’re scared of jail time or any consequences isnt a real man! And if you really think that any of them would do serious jail time you must be kidding! I could care less that he’s a Holy/Jesus Almighty Christian and “Must do the right thing”. What ever happened to Loyalty & Respect for friendship.Apparently you like the idea of selling out someone in order to what’s right, how nobal.”My dad supplised me with HGH and Roger spoke to me about using HGH in years past”..that’s pathetic! I GUARANTEE you he gets boo’d opening day! Don’t get me wrong,I won’t turn this into a serious political debate like an Organized Crime trial where the term “RAT” takes on a larger scale.BUTTTT a RAT is a RAT and anyone who squeals on someone else is just that! So Brett,to further answer your question….yeah I’d suck up whatever the consequences are if it means not ratting out my friends. If that means jailtime,so be it…at least I have my dignity then having to stare in the mirror everyday knowing I’m home because I had to SELL OUT people closest to me! I have my opinion, apparently we know where you stand on this too. BTW…Go Yankees.

Had some typos..my bad! **Regardless if Congress or anyone else is asking** (NO WHO)*
**”My Dad supplied me with HGH”**

“Apparently you like the idea of selling out someone in order to what’s right, how nobal.”

Thank you for making assumptions about my character after I decide to play the devil’s advocate role here.

Anyway, you think that up to five years of jail won’t scare you or Pettitte, in this case? Pettitte’s in a Catch-22 here: you either have the weight of saving a friend or lying to the federal government. Let’s not forget that (as the link shows) the friendship may not be as strong/amazing as the media portrayed it to be, though the article’s not the end-all-to-be-all, it just shows a different side. If Clemens was really Pettitte’s best friend and everything the media said the friendship was, it makes the decision even tougher.

It can be a matter of clearing his conscience and finally “doing the right thing” than living a lie and cover up a “friend” who has no remorse of being in the wrong. If you can tell, like before, my opinions on the matter aren’t visible here. Once again, I’m just playing devil’s advocate.

“I GUARANTEE you he gets boo’d opening day!”

That’s your opinion. I do believe that he won’t get booed on Opening Day, and I have the opinions of other Yankee fans who believe what I believe, but we’ll see what happens.

Btw, my name is Brent. Thank you.

Brent..My mistake for the name,I was typing a bit fast. But no,I really don’t think Pettitte,Clemens,or McNamee for that matter would do any jail time. The Gov’t is known for throwing all sorts of threats and jail term numbers around in order to get people to talk, that’s what they do best to get the mice to come out and play! It was a HEARSAY hearing with NO real evidence and Congress just wanted an idea of what was going on at the time.If Roger Clemens or Pettitte goes to jail then get about 1000 other cells lined up bc a ton of other atheletes were def involved.I’m sure everyone has there opinion on this topic.I was simply responding to your orginal one, thinking it was a sarcastic comment.Even if Andy and Clemens weren’t great friends, you still don’t thrown anyone under the bus to save your own end.I mean would it hurt Pettitte just to say “I apologize for using HGH and I admit full responsibility for my actions. As far as Roger Clemens goes,I have no knowledge whatsoever.” The end! I know everyone wants to rid baseball of steroids and that’s great, but ratting on other players is just wrong.Pettitte is clearly shaken by all this and the end result is that he looks like a total coward. You can’t tell me that when they’re all in that locker room, they’re not whispering “rat or stool pigeon” beneath there breath, come on! As for opening day,I think there will be mixed reviews and yes I think he will get the brunt of mostly boo’s…who knows. On a baseball note…I’d like to stick it to Boston this year,bc I’m sick of reading there cocky comments on there sites! lol

Good response, Rob, I totally respect that and your views. I do believe that most Yankee fans view him as being the “honest one” and taking a step he never needed to make to get the truth out there. However, it can definitely be used as a cowardly and scared move. There are definitely two sides to view this. Though I can see the former, the latter has truth to it as well.

Though much has been made about the young pitching we have, we have a shot, a big one, to make a run. Of course, when the Yankees’ worst player in OBP is a .340, you usually have a great chance to win some games. For comparison, a .340 OBP is just a little above what’s usually league average now-a-days.
