Yanks vs. Sox starts early this year

We officially have a war of words between the ownership of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

Quote from Hank Steinbrenner:

“Red Sox Nation?” What a bunch of [expletive] that is,” he [Hank Steinbrenner] said in an interview with The New York Times’ Play magazine. “That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.

“Go anywhere in America and you won’t see Red Sox hats and jackets, you’ll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We’re going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order.”

This prompted a response from John Henry:

“I’m a big Hank fan,” Henry wrote in an email. “Just to ensure he knows how cool Red Sox Nation is, we officially inducted him as a member of Red Sox Nation and we are sending him his membership card giving him access to an array of options including our newsletter, bumper stickers, pins, Green Monster seats and a hat personally autographed by David Ortiz.”

Say what you will about John Henry, that was a pretty funny response. I say they go back and forth about two more times before Hank takes his shirt off and challenges him to a No Holds Barred match.

You know… Hank talks too much and he’s probably going to cause some problems for us at some point that could’ve been avoided. But temperance can be learned. Piss and vinegar, salt in your veins, having a little Captain in you…. whatever you want to call it, Hank has it, and that’s not something that can be learned. For better or for worse, we’ve got ourselves an entertaining owner. I dig it.
