Gary Thorne just made a fool of himself

Gary Thorne just mentioned that Jason Giambi is writing another book and in this one, he says that he introduced Alex Rodriguez to a steroids dealer and that Alex Rodriguez was chasing his wife.

Ok… could’ve been an honest mistake. He said “Giambi” when he meant to say “Canseco”. When Thorne took a breath, Steve Phillips chimed in with “Jose Canseco.”

After a moment, Thorne continues, “Man, I can’t wait to see the throws from third to first this year.”

….. That wasn’t an honest mistake. He actually thinks that Jason Giambi is Jose Canseco. I think their producer just killed himself.

Granted thats a pretty big mistake, Id much rather listen to Thorne then Phillips anyday. Steve Phillips and his man crush with Manny frankly creeps me out…

Wasn’t it Gary Thorne who said Schilling’s sock was covered in ketchup last year? If so he gets a pass in my book. Also I believe he called a bunch of playoff games for ESPN back in the day. Such as the Tino Martinez homerun call in Game 4 vs. Arizona.

If I’m wrong someone please let me know, but I have always been a fan of Thorne.

Steve Phillips went into detail about Manny’s off-season program. He apparently went to a training facility in Arizona with Pedroia, took Yoga and he read “The Secret”. He READ THE SECRET!!!!! He continues to close this little nugget with “I guess that’s the secret to his great hitting.”

Thorne has made some great calls over the years. The Mattingly homer in the Wild card game 2 vs. Seattle in 1995. Also, the O’Neill homer in the ‘98 playoffs, also against Seattle.

    Jerryd1949–>

“This one by Mattingly, oh hang on to the roof, gooood-bye homerun, Don Mattingly!!!!”

That was a classic, I also like:

“Oh yeah Tie Game, Paul O’Neil…into the night of New York!!!”

Both from that great 4 game series with Seattle :).

Not only was there the canseco/giambi confusion, but yesterday I heard him twice call 1-2 counts with 2-1 counts. I think he’s prime for a stroke.

Give him a break… they were 3000 miles away in Japan, perhaps their circuits weren’t firing right - jetlag and all… it happens to the best… I’m pretty sure he knew Canseco wrote Juiced

If he knows who Canseco is then why did he make the “throws from first to third” comment and then say that “the Yankees need to sit those two down and have them work it out.” Does he think Canseco still plays for the Yankees?
Granted he is tired from working in Japan, but that is a pretty big mistake to make when its your job to follow baseball.

Ummm….the Yanks 1998 postseason didn’t include Seattle. They swept Texas in the 1st round and defeated Cleveland in six.

O’Neill hit 3 HR vs. Seattle in 1995 and 2 against them in 2001.
