Preview: The Yankees look to take the series from the White Sox after last night’s 9-5 victory. They have Mike Mussina on the hill, looking to recover from his first terrible start of the season. At the plate, the Yankees have the same lineup as they had yesterday, with Morgan Ensberg once again filling in for Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod should return to the team tomorrow, and may play on Friday against Cleveland.

On the mound for the White Sox is Javier Vazquez, who pulls up some terrible memories. He brings back the 2004 collapse, which leads me to recall, in no particular order, Kevin Brown, Jeff Weaver, trading Ted Lilly, Randy Johnson, and trading Nick Johnson. Hopefully the Yankees can start to build some happy memories about Vazquez tonight.

Recap:

Welcome back to the field, Jorge! Posada made his return behind the plate tonight and turned in a 4-5 performance with 2 RBI. 3 of his 4 hits were doubles. That’ll help the old slugging percentage.

Johnny Damon went 2-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. He’s been hot as of late.

Mike Mussina pitched a very solid 7 innings of 4-hit 2-run ball. He walked 1 and struck out 3. It was nice to see a good performance out of Moose, especially with Posada behind the plate.

Rivera came in to get the 5-out save. Not bad for an old guy. He’s still sporting a very sexy 0.00 ERA.

Melky also had a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a run scored an an RBI.

Jason Giambi had a “steal”.

Onto the not so good…

Robbie Cano continues to struggle, going 0-4 tonight and watching his batting average dip to .165.

LaTroy Hawkins isn’t winning any more fans after having given up 21. He gave up a walk and a hit and gave up 2 runs, while only recording 1 out. Granted, those 2 runs were allowed to score by Traber and Rivera but… don’t put them there in the first place, man.

Jason Giambi and Robinson Cano are both still batting in the .100s.

Jeter is 1 for his last 14.

Moose looking good so far. I wonder how long he lasts.

That’s alright. Solo homers are ok.

There’s Damon making me look good.

Mussina looked great tonight. One run over six innings. What more could you ask?

He’s at 90 pitches, so he could come out for one more, but that’s probably it.

Two runs over seven isn’t bad, either.

Lefties are now batting .375 against Traber, with a .500 OBP.

We’ve got too much talent at AAA and even AA for Hawkins and Traber to be with us much longer. And even Farnsworth, who could be better trade bait.

I hope the people who were quick to comment last week that Moose is done come on here and acknowledge his solid start today. Plus did anyone see the stat YES showed after the game in regards to Moose.

He is 0-2 this year for the Redsox with an era around 9 (even though his first start against them wasn’t that bad), and against the rest of the league (yes small sample size but still) he is 2-1 with an era around 2.5 and a whip near 1.0.

Nice job for a guy so many declared as “washed up.” You think Igawa can do what Moose has done so far, I think not.

Also, did anyone else notice the YES gun today? Was it way off, I mean it must have been. It had Moose pitching at 81 mph, which I guess is possible but I bet he was more at 85-86. But then it had Mo pitching at 86 mph. That has got to be wrong, or it was just really really cold there today.

I still don’t like Mussina in the rotation. He’ll get on a mini-roll here and there, but, overall, he’s a liability. Of course, right now, I don’t see any better alternatives, particularly with Hughes and Kennedy both looking like they need time in AAA

Joe, even the worst pitchers in baseball put together quality starts every once in a while. He still has an ERA around 5. One good start doesn’t mean a pitcher’s good, just as one bad start doesn’t mean they’re bad.

According to espn’s gun mussina was regularly pitching in the high 80’s today and occasionally hit 90. They said the big difference in today’s start compared to his others was that he was throwing his slider more and was pitching to the batters inside a lot more.

Henn has looked good at SWB since coming back from injury. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is given a shot if Traber keeps this up.

Anyone hear Joe Morgan joking about analyzing Joe G’s son batting stance? Why did that not suprise me…

Moose’s only read bad pitch was the hanging breaking ball to Crede. He pitched real well, hopefully Hughes can give them at least 6 tonight and can pull off a sweep heading to Cleveland.
