Posada Placed on DL
As was speculated earlier, Jorge Posada will be heading to the disabled list. After today’s game, Jorge confirmed that fact to the media, telling them that his sore shoulder simply is not getting any better.
Posada had an MRI a few weeks ago which showed nothing more than a strain. However, he thinks that there may be more to it than was readily apparent. He will travel back to New York with the team tomorrow after the game, where he will get checked out by team doctors. After that, he said he urgently wants to schedule an appointment with Dr. James Andrews.
In his post-game interview, Posada sounded shocked. He played well in Saturday’s game, hitting a bases-loaded triple, as well as making a few strong throws to second. He showed up to today’s game fully expecting to play, but when he started some warm up tosses just minutes before the game, he realized something was wrong. “I made some good throws [on Saturday]. Today, I couldn’t throw at all.”
Posada was also asked whether he would consider playing first base. He left no doubt what he thought of that idea, saying, “I’m not playing first base. I’m a catcher.”
Jose Molina will take over the duty of regular catcher, and the Yankees will call up AAA catcher Chris Stewart to back him up. They designated Chad Moeller for assignment Friday, and will not find out if he passed waivers for a couple more days.

It stinks for frankie Cervelli. if healthy, he would probably be getting the call.

How much longer before he’s back?

Cervelli or Posada? Cervelli should be back by late May, if i recall correctly.

Why is the waiver process taking so long?
I thought they DFA’d Moeller back on Thursday? Is some team actually considering taking him?

Designating a player takes up to 10 days before they can do anything with them. That is what takes so long. So the 3rd or 4th is the earliest he can be recalled. They will go with Stewart for now who has been hitting the ball decent at Triple-A. Plus they still have Molina who has been holding the fort well for a catcher not use to playing this must. I think his average has been respectable and he’s been handling the pitching staff pretty well when behind the dish. And he’s got a good arm to keep those runners close and slow down the running game.

I believe you are incorrect. According to Chad Jennings SWB blog:
As for Chad Moeller’s situation, I believe this is the way it works: He has 72 hours to clear waivers, but if he clears, the 10-day rule still applies. He’s been sent down, so the Yankees have to wait 10 days to call him up. They can’t claim they’re calling him up because of an injury — thus negating the 10 days — because Stewart went up for the injury. If Moeller goes up, he’ll be taking the place of perfectly healthy Stewart.

Considering the options available, if Jorge is out for the season (or most of it), I might look at getting Damian Miller out of retirement.

ESPN is saying Posada’s to have surgery. I already didn’t like what I’ve seen from the majority of our rotation, but this makes it even less likely that we’ll miss the playoffs. Guess we’re in for a rebuilding year. Too bad we don’t have a healthy good catching prospect to get his feet wet.

The best two are Romine and Montero at Low A Charleston. Romine is 19. Montero 18. Figure four years.

“less likely that we’ll miss the playoffs”
I think you mean less likely that we will make the playoffs.
I still have faith in the good ol’ yanks.

Pete Abe had a list of catchers to aid in the solution of Jorge being on the DL. http://yankees.lhblogs.com/
Um…if there is a chance, minor as it might be, that we could see Sal Fasano back in pinstripes I would be soooo excited!
**don’t laugh at me- his jersey shirt is hand’s down the best one I have ever owned…for obvious reasons :-)
