Hughes to the 15-day DL
According to Pete Abe, during the Yankees/Tigers game today, the Yankees announced that Phil Hughes, who hasn’t been able to capture a win this year and who has been the ire of the press after last night’s debacle, will be going on the DL with a strained right oblique.
Add Hughes to the long list of injuries so far. The Yankees apparently came to Spring Training a few months ago in mostly great condition.
With all the conversation Joe Girardi made about Hughes being “healthy” before the game tonight, only questions come up on why Hughes is put on the DL now.
Update:
Darrell Rasner will take Hughes’ spot in the rotation while he is out.

I have a feeling this was news to Phil.

Agreed, Eric.
Though, with all respect to David Cone, I have to ask, why would the Yankees “jerk Hughes around” like this?

Is this mostly a PR move?
It answers the “What’s wrong with him” questions for now, keeps the pressure off him a little bit and gives him time to work in the minors without demoting him.
Girardi is making a fool of himself with those kind of comments, by the way. It looks he’s not trust worthy regarding news about his players

Oh for Christ’s sake…. he didn’t hurt anything. They want to replace him in the rotation but don’t want to actually “demote” him. Just like Wilson Betemit’s fake eye injury and the near fake ankle injury to Wilson Betemit, this is another non-injury injury.
Ah yeah, Girardi’s mis-information is becoming stupid. It’s quickly becoming the thing he’s going to be known for. We’re going to look back and make fun of all the ridiculous stuff that he would feed the media about his players while everyone knows he is full of crap. He’s making a fool of himself and I don’t like it.

At last, no matter how they do it, they are giving Hughes a chance to settle himself and be out from under the daily pressure and barrages of disappointment and anger aimed at his 21 year old head and heart . . . by media and fans who should know better.

But what’s the point of putting him on the DL? Yes, blaming his struggles on the ‘injury’ might help him deal with the media pressures and such, but 15 days of rest? Is there a rule that he can’t work on his mechanics while on the DL? Why not the send-down to AAA?
Eh, this just brings in a lot of questions Cashman and Girardi have to answer in the next few days.

Jim, please. Torre did the same thing, saying Player X is fine when he was far off, etc. The team has been playing this silly subterfuge game for years. He just had the writers wrapped around his finger, so they ignored it or blamed it on Cashman. Girardi tells the media what the front office tells him to say when it comes to injuries. If Cash didnt want anyone to know, for whatever silly reason, Girardi is not at liberty to just ignore that mandate and say what he pleases. That’s what got him canned in Florida.

I bet that PHughes is actually injured. And oblique strains can take awhile to come back from (3-6 weeks). Colon has taken almost a month with his, and I remember that Mike Hampton took almost 2 months. Interesting note from TYLER KEPNER: Hughes has been injured in four of his five professional seasons, including most of last year, when a torn hamstring and a sprained ankle cost him three months.
But I can’t expain Girardi’s lie. Why would he do that? Does anyone have any idea?

Phil should come down here and join us for a few days at New Orleans Jazz Fest - blow off some steam, rejuvenate his spirit. We’ll have him throwing serious heat by the time Sunday night at Tipitinas comes around!

Hughes has a stress fracture of a rib. He won’t touch a ball for 4 weeks. Expect him back 4th of July at earliest.

That’s a pretty late estimated return. I don’t really see him taking a month-long rehab assignment.

I don’t know why anyone would be angry at Hughes and Kennedy. They’re just kids. I’m just curious as to how Hughes could have been lights out in the minors and been super hyped and not have anything on the ball in the majors. Let’s hope the time away turns things around for him. I still have high hopes for Kennedy - he just needs to get aggressive.

Fractured rib can hurt, which means he was playing through pain . . . not wanting media and fans to think he was wimping out??? Maybe there is more substance to him than he was given credit for. Hopefully he will be back to full strength in July, a little older, wiser and, again, lights out . . . except vs. the Red Sox.

He won’t touch a ball for four weeks. He then starts rehab. He needs to build up again. That’s another 4 weeks. Figure 4 to 5 rehab starts.
that’s not a late estimated return. It’s assuming all goes well.
July 4th or so…Heck, today is May 2nd.
