Checking in with Kei Igawa

With Rasner taking the over the 4th starter spot from the injured Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy being sent down to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre, it looks like we’re about to get a healthy dose of Kei Igawa. So before fans started throwing themselves out of windows, I thought that now would be a good time to check back and see what the 46 Million Dollar Man was up to.

In 8 AAA starts, Igawa has:

ERA: 3.86
WHIP: 1.13
K/BB: 3.33
avg IP: 5.2
HR: 3
GO/AO: 0.70
AVG: .223

Igawa is showing a decent WHIP and a very good strikeout-to-walk ratio, but his average of only 5 2/3 innings per start isn’t all that encouraging. However, he’s only gone less than 5 innings in 1 of his starts. He’s also given up 3 homers on the year.

All in all, the numbers against AAA hitters aren’t really spectacular, but I think they’re acceptable for a 5th or 6th starter. And right now, they might be better than what you might get out of Ian Kennedy.

I bet if Cashman offered Igawa for Barry Zito right now (plus throw in some cash), the Giants might bite…but, with the way Zito has been pitching, you might be better off with Igawa.

The AAA guys must be swinging through those letter-high fastballs.

[…] himself out. I can’t see Igawa sticking around in the rotation for too long. He’s done fairly well in AAA so far and whatever he can provide for now will be just fine until Kennedy is […]

They’re swinging through the high change-up which major league batters crush

Igawa was a on a pitch count in the first couple of starts which is part of the reason why he can’t go longer. her got through his first start inlike 65 pitcher IIRC (amazing consider that it was 6IP with 7K)

on the brighter side, he’s a pretty inconsistent year to year guy even in Japan. alternating betweeen great and just a tick above average quiet often. on the down side. he seem to have gotten less effective every start so far.

we’ll see, your right that at this point he can’t be worse than the kids have been so far (sadly) and we don’t have much expectation of him anyway :P

NYPost reporting that Igawa will likely start next week in Detroit - against that good right handed lineup. I believe Detroit had an all right handed lineup when Pettitte pitched against them last week. This will be a huge test for Igawa.

If he can keep his walks down, I think he can have success. I believe the walks are what killed him last year.

He had the 6 perfect innings in the opener vs. Lehigh Valley but I live in the Lehigh Valley….the Iron Pigs (yes, that’s their nickname) are awful.

    4-27.

    You read that right. 4-27.

Outside of that start and win, the ERA goes from 3.86 to 4.54. The record to 2-3….Hmmm….

    Make that 4-28.

not surprising considering that it’s the Philly’s AAA club…

but wow, that’s like the reverse of the Riverdogs :P

Over the last two years the Tigers have absolutely destroyed left-handed pitching. This one is going to be a bloodbath.
