Bad Idea of the Week: David Wells
We all know the Yankees have some starting rotation issues. Kei Igawa is starting for the Yankees tonight, and expectations are not very high. However, David Wells has come out with an idea in the New York Post today on how he thinks the Yankees could improve their rotation; sign him.
“I’m in shape, I’d just have to fine-tune a couple of things,” Wells said. “I’d need a little bit of time, but not much. Physically I feel fine, real good.”
Now, when I first saw the headline (which was terrible in the true New York Post style) I didn’t think it would be worth writing, or even really thinking about. I forgot about Hank Steinbrenner though, who sounded interested. “I’ve thought about it…you never know,” he said, adding, “He’ll always be a Yankee to me.”
They also quoted an unnamed Yankee veteran as saying, “It may happen.”
Of course, Wells also used this opportunity to take a shot at Joe Torre. He said that when the Yankees didn’t resign him after 2003, it wasn’t because he was 40 years old and his body had just given out on him in the middle of the World Series - okay, maybe he didn’t say that - but rather because he wasn’t one of Joe Torre’s “boys.” Alright, David.
I liked David Wells when he pitched in New York. He was a good pitcher who won his share of games for the Yankees. But at 45 years old, he’s got nothing left. Last year, pitching in the NL West - one of the worst-hitting divisions - he posted an ERA of 5.43 with a WHIP of 1.54 and lasted just 5.4 innings per start. Moving to the heavy-hitting AL East probably wouldn’t be the greatest career move. Have a good retirement, Boomer.

I think i might make that trade.

I doubt that Wells would sign with the Yankees because of Girardi’s anti-candy and ice cream in the clubhouse policy.

I’ll take Wells over Igawa in a heartbeat

I would not take that trade Luke…. It’d be ridiculous and cost too much to the Yankees.

How’s Howard in the field? Plus who takes Melky’s place in center. Howard can sure fill 2 needs though , if he plays good D

shades: you havent done your homework. david was only supposed to make 27 starts last year max! His contract maxed out at 27, and Towers said when they signed him they would rest him from time to time. Look at Davids game log last year, and you will feel not so smart. If we sign him for 15-20 starts, he can be effective, but you gotta give him a few DL stints.

2003 Series, game five. Wells is a loser and a quitter. He is not worthy to put that uniform on again - EVER.

I agree, a 45 year-old Wells would have a high probability of being horrible back in pinstripes but to be honest I’d much rather watch Wells over Igawa ANYDAY!!!!

I’d rather see Chase Wright (2.54 at Trenton) than Wells or Igawa.
…I won’t justify the B.S. Howard rumor other than to say that defensively, Howard isn’t that good.

Wells can still pitch…I watched him closely last year playing for SD and he even finished his career with the Dodgers with a few decent outings. He’s not going to be at the top of his game but he may be able to win some games for the yanks. Personally, I wish the Tigers would snatch him up. I mean, they paid Todd Jones 7 million for 1 year to be a closer…Wells is a better pitcher than that guy. As for tjo161…the game 5 comment about him being a loser and a quiter…you’re a moron. Give me a break!…injuries never happen at convenient times. And if you think he’d of not had that injury if he were in shape then how does that explain the hundreds of “in-shape” athletes that we see in ALL sports who get put on the DL from minor tears or back spasms or groin pulls etc etc etc. Look at Andy Petite?!?…or young guys like Gagne? Injuries happen…surgeries happen…and they don’t wait for convenient times to occur and don’t only happen to people out of shape. Wells hasn’t spent most of, or hardly any, of his career on the DL list so I can’t believe that people would judge him for having back issues during that game. I love the guy because in my opinion he’s one of the few guys who wants to play because he loves the game. I want to watch a guy like that over someone like Roger Clemens ANY TIME!
