Preview:
Kei Igawa makes his season debut for the Yankees tonight as they open a three game set with the Tigers in Detroit. Igawa has fared pretty well so far this season in Scranton, but seems to be following a troubling pattern of getting worse each start out.
One area in which he has improved significantly this season is keeping down the walks. Again though, he surrendered a season-high of four in his most recent game. Igawa has decent stuff, so if he can continue to attack the zone rather than trying to nibble around it, he can get some good results. He can’t revert back to his habit of walking everybody though, or this will be a short stint in the majors.
To make room for Kei Igawa, Chris Britton was optioned to Scranton
Recap:
It seems like Kei Igawa may have misunderstood me. When I said “attack the zone,” he apparently thought that meant, “throw it right down the middle.” Hey, on the bright side, he didn’t walk anyone. Instead he gave up 11 hits, surrendering six runs in just three innings.
After he left the game, the bullpen did a stellar job. Jonathan Albaladejo - who left the game with an injured elbow - LaTroy Hawkins and Edwar Ramirez combined for five shutout innings, really giving the offense every opportunity to get back in the game.
The offense was able to get their fair share of hits tonight, but aside from the ninth inning, they were unable to turn them into any serious run production. They ground into two double plays and left nine men on base. In the ninth inning, the Yankees finally were able to put something together, putting a 3-spot up on Tigers’ closer Todd Jones. Normally, that’s a great inning. Unfortunately, thanks to their previous ineptitude they needed four runs and fell just short, leaving the tying run in scoring position.
Update:
Albaladejo will go on the DL. Chris Britton will be called back up to take his spot.

This is some defensive exhibition the yankees are putting on in the third. And it all starts with a typical wild, sinking throw from the captain.

JUST PITIFUL!!

Well, Igawa picking up exactly where he left off.
Next in line for an audition please…
(and note to Cashman: please throw Igawa into a trade at some point soon so we can give somebody else at AAA a chance to get ready for the Major’s - who has a realistic shot at being successful. Ideally also throw in Betemint - if Gonzales was at third, he’d probably have napped one or two of those balls)
Ugh.
Looking forward to seeing how IPK does, and hoping he can make it back as the IPK we saw last year!

Two runners on, one out in the 1st, 3rd & 5th and zero runs to show from any of those innings. There’s not a pitcher I’d less like to see the Yankees make look good than Kenny Rogers. Between Igawa and this I think I’m gonna be sick.

I sure am glad Cashman did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to reinforce this pitching staff. He couldn’t build a pitching staff to save his life. Can’t wait for him to get fired this year.

I actually disagree with you Shane. I commend Cashman for being patient and changing Stienbrenners ideology of trading youth for developed players. Signing or trading for established players for the most part has not taken us anywhere these past 7 years, and i think it has been trading youth and the lack of good scouting in the past has put us in this dire position. The trades or signings of the Provanos, Wrights,Browns, Johnson’s have done nothing but increase salary, and were decisions that were made out of desperation due to lack of homegrown players,
The only hole in Cashmans managerial has been his bolstering of Lefty hitters in the lineup. But I due understand where your coming from, b/c I am angry as well with the way the Yankees have been playing lately, but we can not wash our hands off Cashman due to this slow start, cause his plans are going to benefit us in the long run.

Cashman can’t build a pitching staff? I’m sorry but he does have a staff in development now. Chamberlain, Kennedy, Hughes, Horne, Betances, Brackman…he is building it now that they can actually draft players since the Yankees aren’t going out and signing every has been off the free agent market. They traded the farm, and lost draft picks for several years and just now those draft picks they’ve been keeping since 2005 are starting to turn into triple-a prospects. You can’t just pull a pitching staff out of your ass!!! They have to develop and when you don’t have the option to draft players to develop or you trade away your development players you can’t ‘build a staff’. Don’t be so shallow about what Cashman has tried to accomplish as quickly as its taking shape!!

And i know Betemit was suppose to be a great player but I think he is horrible and needs to be let go…Igawa should just as well go back to Japan as he can’t pitch a lick..
May 9th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Wow - if Igawa didn’t let up those 6 runs, the Yanks could have tied it.
And Betemint sparked it (Betemint hitting is good for his trade value…)

khafiz, you don’t have to trade prospects to get players. We have the highest payroll in the world, why don’t we fucking put it to some use? There are dozens of options we could have signed for our 5th or 6th starters that would have been infinitely better than Kennedy or Igawa.

Igawa needs to be traded to the NL West. I bet he could have an okay career over there but he’s clearly not able to handle the AL East. I heard he’s already scheduled for another start Wednesday. I hope that decision is changed between then and now. What about Karstens? Where’s he at? There’s got to be someone else besides Igawa to promote.
May 10th, 2008 at 12:23 am
gianthinker - Karstens is still rehabbing his injury from spring training. He’s still a few weeks away.

Who would you suggest Shane? Since you clearly would make this team a powerhouse without any weaknesses.

Shane… have you been watching the same seasons as me???? These old veterans that we keep throwing money at aren’t doing it!!! The teams of the 90s weren’t built on household names. They were built on guys that were brought in to serve a purpose and happened to become household names because of what the teams did…Yes, there were the David Cones and Roger Clemens, but O’neil, Brosuis, and even Girardi weren’t top tier players, yet these guys won many championships for us. You can’t throw money at the situation to fix it… Wells would get you a 5 ERA, which isn’t any better than Kennedy has been giving you recently. Give it time…it’s early and the kids will work it out
May 10th, 2008 at 6:42 am
How bout the Mets last year? They bought some top talent and how did they do postseason.. oh wait, they didn’t even make it to the postseason…Money doesn’t make great baseball teams!! Look at the Marlins, Twins and Rays!! Low payrolls and two of them leading their divisions with the Third in second in the east. So throwning money isn’t gonna solve anything. Clemens, 21M last year and we got what 6-6 with a 4+ ERA….Was it worth it?
May 10th, 2008 at 8:58 am
Shane, you don’t build a solid pitching staff by throwing money at pitchers that have a mediocre contract year, and we all have seen that money can’t always buy you a Championship.

Are you guys kidding me??? Did anyone see how bad Wilson Betemit was last night there were atleast 2 hits that he should have had and another that play at 3rd that he completely botched. With Arod at 3rd Igawa only gives up 2 runs in that inning, dont get me wrong I am not a big Igawa fan but he is the easy whipping boy. The defense (particularly Betemit) lost the game last night and for that not to event be mentioned in the article or these comments makes me wonder if you guys actually watched the game???
