Ian Kennedy to pitch Thursday against Rays, ARod Still Hurt (Updated)

Updated by Moshe: The Post is now reporting that Kennedy will go Thursday against the Rays, and Rasner will face the Mets. Smart move by the Yankees, allowing Kennedy’s return to be in a situation fraught with less pressure than a Subway Series start, while seeing if Rasner can handle the spotlight. In other news, Alex Rodriguez will not be activated when he is eligible to come off the DL on Thursday, according to Pete Abraham. He will miss the series against the Mets, as an MRI did not show enough improvement for him to play in rehab games at this juncture.

*********

A lot of the discussion after the rain-out yesterday was centered around who was going to pitch on Friday against the Mets? Since the rain-out gave the Yankees the ability to push Kei Igawa’s next “probable start” to Friday from Wednesday, the Yankees had some flexibility to remove Igawa from pitching on Friday and insert another pitcher in place.

That pitcher is Ian Kennedy.

Via the NY Post:

Ian Kennedy will be called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to pitch in the opening game of the Subway Series against the Mets on Friday.

Kennedy will start for SWB tonight in Indianapolis in the first game of a doubleheader, but likely will be restricted to one inning so he can be ready to pitch Friday.

Though Joe Girardi stated that he would prefer to see Kennedy be consistent in the minors before coming back up, the Yankees thought the situation was more dire than giving Kennedy another AAA start: a Friday start against (most likely) Johan Santana.

Thank the lord. Good for Ian to get another chance- he showed some moxie in his minor league start.

THIS IS THE MOST RETARDED MOVE EVER!! I CANT EVEN DEMONSTRATE ON HERE HOW ANGRY I AM AT THE YANKEES RIGHT NOW…HOW ARE THEY GONNA RECALL KENNEDY AFTER 1 START AT AAA!!!!!!!!>?????? THEY ARE OBVIOUSLY MORE CONCERNED WITH WINNING THAN WITH HIS DEVELOPMENT…HE IS NOT READY FOR THE MAJORS!!!! LET HIM DEVELOP!!!!1 HATE THIS THIS IS RETARDED….GUARANTEE YOU HES GONNA GET BLITZED LIKE HE HAS BEEN ALL YEAR, WHAT DO THEY THING SPENDING 5 DAYS AT SCRANTON DID????? HUGHES AND KENNEDY SHOULD BOTH SPEND THE ENTIRE YEAR IN AAA WHO CARES IF THEY LOSE THIS YEAR!!!! NOT WILLING TO SACRIFICE THE PLAYERS JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE SCARED TO HAVE A LOSING SEASON….THEY’RE GONNA RUIN THESE PITCHERS WHO WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO DEVELOP THEIR 3RD, 4TH, 5TH PITCHES

So who else should be pitching, Matt? Kennedy has shown time after time that he does not have much to learn at the AAA level. He needs to develop and take his lumps at the MLB level.

    Matt,

Whether they bring up Kennedy now or in a year or 2, he will struggle at the major league level. The minors tend to have a larger srike zone for one. He has dominated the minors in the brief time there. It will be more beneficial for him to learn at the major level and grow with Eiland than at the minors, dominating as if he was a staff ace. His stuff is not that good, but it is good enough to be a quality back end guy. Calling Igawa for Kennedy was a dumb move to begin with!
