Preview:

The New York Mets will play a series at Yankee Stadium for the final time. Unfortunately, they don’t get to showcase Johan Santana, who was scheduled to pitch last night, before the game was postponed. The Yankees lost 3 of 4 from the Rays, and are sitting in last place in the AL East. They’ve had good luck in interleague play, and are hoping to continue that trend.

Andy Pettitte will look to use the Subway Series as a turning point, as he hasn’t been great as of late. His ERA sky-rocketed to above four, and is winless in his last three games.

The good news coming out of this weekend is that Alex Rodriguez is eyeing a Tuesday return. For those wondering, Jorge Posada is still likely to be out until early June.

Update:

Johan Santana will pitch in today’s game. The man a lot of Yankees fans were campaigning for will make his first appearance at Yankee Stadium in a Mets jersey.

Recap:

Apparently Johan Santana really wanted to pitch against the Yankees. Possibly proving himself, Santana came in and pitched 7.2 innings of 7 hit, 4 run ball, leading the Mets to a victory. One good performance against the Yankees does not mean in any way that they were wrong for not grabbing him.

Andy Pettitte’s bad luck continues, having another loss tacked onto his record. He pitched 6 innings and only allowed 3 runs, which is a sign of improvement. Of course, it was the middle relief that did the Yankees in. Kyle Farnsworth became the man we all remember him as, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits in one inning. Even Joba had problems, allowing one run on two hits. In all fairness, the middle relief hasn’t been treacherous to date, but today they s*** the bed.

The offense was fairly potent today, putting up four runs. Despite homeruns from Bobby Abreu, Derek Jeter, and Jason Giambi (whose underwear worked apparently), their four runs weren’t enough. The problem occurred at the end of the lineup, specifically the 7-9 hitters, who were a combined 0-for-9. Even Shelly Duncan and Morgan Ensberg, who came into pinch-hit, were 0-for-2.

Remember everybody; Alex Rodriguez is scheduled for a Tuesday return. He hit a homerun in his last spring training game. I’m looking at A-Rod to save this team.

I feel a little more comfortable with Pettite facing off against Santana. Hopefully he can find his usual consistent self for tonight, we could use the win.

Jinxed him again. seems like his last 4-5 starts he’s gone from mr. dependable quality start to mr. dependable get a lead and then hit a wall in the 3rd - 5th innings and cough it up. Wonder if he comes out of the gate with too much adrenalin and can’t pace himself throughout the game. He needs to regain the consistency that he has made him so great and find a way to avoid the big innings that have plagued him lately. Come on Andy, buckle down!

Andy thinks to much when he gets into trouble with runners in scoring position. What a f***** dipshit.

Unf’ing believable. How does a guy with his control walk in a run? It’s as if he just has lost complete touch with the strike zone all of a sudden after sailing for 3 innings. Man, when things are going bad they sure do snowball. Now an infield hit. I think he’s thrown over 40 pitches in the 4th inning after throwing that many in the first 3 combined. WTF!!!!!!!!!

I think I just threw up. No, that was Andy throwing up the lead all over the mound. You can’t waste chances like that up against Santana. Unlike Andy, I expect he will now buckle down and throw up goose eggs the rest of the way.

Beautiful. Pettitte probably hadn’t even had a chance to sit down yet and now he’s got to go back out on the mound. Andy, watch & learn. Santana just showed you how you close the door after being given a lead. You f’ing throw strikes and trust your stuff!!!!!!!!!

That was an unlucky inning combined with a poorly pitched inning. You cant walk the 8th hitter, the catcher in that spot.

Coming from a die hard Yankee fan, whom has a medical bill to prove his love for the Bronx bombers, I just don’t think this team is going anywhere with or without Alex and Jorge this season.
These guys are prime example of inconsistency in baseball and with the way Tampa is playing at this moment its going to be pretty difficult to make up ground if the Yankees keep on losing games.
There are just to many left handed and old as dirt hitters in this lineup, but i still would not have Kennedy/Hughes or any young prospect traded rather i would prefer trading any of the left handed hitters other then cano.
And i am not saying this out of frustration and anger. The Yankees are what they are and inconsistency has a lot to do with it.

Well, Santana had 4 runs in 7 2/3. Not great, but at the end I think he was pitching to the score a bit.

Am I seeing things or did Giambi just hit a ball to left field?

Quietly, Edwar is having some good innings… He adds a different dimension to the bullpen, so that would be encouraging. Cox would be more of a Nelson type, yes? Still another dimension. I really like the developing bullpen (and as a result, have to wonder whether we’ll see Farnsworth or even Hawkins traded for a bat before the deadline)

Or traded for a position player prospect…

I just think that somehow, we’ve got to get Gardner and/or Christian up here to add some zip to the offense.

2009 we’ll hopefully be seeing Ajax on the way, but this year, the lineup really needs the injection of speed and excitement that Gardner and/or Christian would provide on the base paths and off the bench.

Considering what Moshe said about “no fire” and the players looking like they’re going through the motions, introduce a new management group, and it’s sure looking like the makings of a mediocre season.
Can’t get to pissed at the farnz; today. It did almost looked like he was channeling last years version, with the same results.
This vaunted offence even without Arod and Jorge should in the words of Kevin Long “not have any problem scoring 5 runs out there” that was what he said after last mondays game. When your hitting coach puts his mouth on you in the press, you just plain suck.
These guys don’t put a game together the way they should, and they know it. Arod and Possada aren’t the answer, they play like they have dinner reservations and a hot date. Disgraceful.

I don’t think they Yankees will be is as much trouble as everyone makes it out to be. They were 9 games out last year at this point. This division is a lot more competitive and once A-Rod is back to add another dimension, this team could take off. Overall the starting pitching is getting better, Pettitte with one bad inning, but when the summer hits, i expect the same tear this team has gone on for the past couple years now. Remember, its a marathon, not a sprint. New manger, new style, takes time to adapt!!
