Preview:
The Mets and Yankees polish off this incarnation of the Subway Series with the Yankees trying to salvage a split and the Mets attempting to finish the abbreviated sweep.
Starting for the Yankees is the formidable Chien-Ming Wang, who is coming off a tough no-decision in which he allowed just one run over seven innings but the Yankees lost 2-1. He has one previous start against the Mets, it being one of his finest. In that game, Wang allowed two runs over 8.2 innings and struck out a career-high 10 in the process.
Derek Jeter will remain in the number three spot this evening for the fourth game in a row, having gone 5 for 8 in the last two games, including supplying half of the Yankee offense yesterday. Jeter also holds the highest career batting average against the Mets of any player with at least 150 plate appearances against them at .386.
The rest of the lineup will stay the same as yesterday as well, with the exception of Jose Molina, who replaces Chad Moeller at the nine spot.
I want to leave you with one last thought; if everything goes as planned, this will be our last game without A-Rod.
Recap:
In his previous four games, Oliver Perez was 1-3, having allowed 15 earned runs, 17 hits and 15 walks in 19.1 innings. It turned out all he needed to turn things around was to face the Yankees.
I wish Ian Kennedy could pitch his next game against the Yankees’ offense.
They managed just three hits and were one elevated fastball to Matsui from getting shut out.
Of course, it wouldn’t have mattered much anyways as Chien-Ming Wang wasn’t any good tonight either. He mowed the Mets down the first three innings before falling apart in the fourth. He did manage to get it back after that, retiring 9 of the next 10 batters. However, he then blew up completely in the eighth. It was like he was on some sort of a loop; three good innings followed by a terrible one, rinse, repeat.
Ross Ohlendorf decided to take it up a notch, allowing an inherited runner to score before giving up 4 earned runs of his own. He got one out.
All in all, it was a pathetic, embarassing attempt at baseball. The only Yankee who did his job tonight was Jose Veras. And that’s not going to win too many ballgames.

You got to give it up to the Yankees this year, they really know how to rejuvenate a struggling pitcher, let alone a struggling team.

I know everyone will give me shit for this, and no one wants to admit it………but i think its over (well not over you can just look into the future) boys, i mean our pitching is just godawful and we cant hit for shit, i know injuries and blah blah, but I’ll be very suprised if we make the playoffs this year……….i’ll be more than happy to eat crow when october rolls around but im just being realistic………

lol its so sad watching them struggle so. I wonder if any of them will even make the all-star game this year.

I’ll bet Wang and Rivera make it, and possibly 2 out of Jeter, A-Rod, and matsui depending on how they play from here on in.

I am really starting to question Girardi and some on his moves. He batted 5 lefties against Perez yesterday. I could understand if they were hot then you might not want to sit them but no one on the team is really hot and Perez kills lefties as they are hitting just over .100 against him. Granted Matsui did hit that homerun but still 5 LEFTIES? He should have put Ensberg at first and Duncan in one of the corner outfields. Obv cant put all of the blame on his, since this team has not hit anyone this year, lefty, righty, good or bad…got to keep the faith though

They must have all the mirrors in their houses covered, because I know nobody can look in one after giving performances like these last 2 weeks

MONEY:
Ensberg? Duncan? The truth is that both have not done their job. Entering last night, Ensberg, Duncan and Molina had a combined 185 AB.
.205-1-8.
With numbers like that, Joe was FORCED to go with the lefties.
I didn’t want Ensberg to begin with, and he’s done nothing.

Its a tough spot because the righties ar doing nothing, and it would be difficult to put Ensberg at 1st with Wang as he only has a few innings there and he will see alot of action BUT - if you are not going to play Shelly for Abreu ( who cannot hit Perez with a paddle) or Giambi against a tough lefty, then why is he on the team!!!

AND - to add insult to injury - after Olie gets lit up and the Mets have hit Yanks 3 times so far, could Olie put one high-and-tight on someone??? we are such a bunch of wimps its nauseating

guys its only may….get off the ledge
May 19th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
mike none of the Yankee hitters were hit on purpose so why even bother starting something. I mean Giambi even leaned into one of those pitches to get on base.

not the point - the place to make a point when you are getting punk-slapped all over the field, at home on National TV against your cross-town rivals and maybe light a fire in the belly, would be after you have an excuse to buzz someone when your AS Second baseman gets hit, and your 1st baseman gets hit twice ( although one was a sllloooowww curve).
im not saying bean someone, but could you make someone jump rope after Reyes is doing his idiot routine in the dugout??

I am not saying it’s over until game 162…. this is the most competitive i’ve seen the AL ever, so a lot of teams are gonna be players in the race for a while… I think with A-Rod back Tuesday, the offense will be a little better (move Abreu back to 3 and Jeter to 2). While he may not get the big hit, he is a distraction to the pitcher, so it works in the teams favor. The pitching hasn’t been overly bad as of yet (and i know the rooks have had problems and the occasional sloppy game), but even Pettitte’s last outing wasn’t bad allowing only 3 ER… This team will get it together before the end!!

Yanks have had injuries to key players; what’s Detroit’s excuse? Now their situation is more alarming.
