Sabathia to Brewers - C.C. Ya Next Year?

According to numerous sources, the Brewers have completed a trade to send stud prospect Matt LaPorta and at least two other prospects to the Indians for ace C.C. Sabathia. Reportedly, the Yankees were “heavily involved” in the talks but came up empty. Most pundits regard the LaPorta package as a “meh” haul but are convinced that GM Mark Shapiro could have done better for the hefty lefty. I don’t know about you guys, but I consider this great news, and would pretty much start penciling Sabathia into my 2009 Yankee rotation as it seems very likely that the Brewers are only renting not buying here.

Signing CC is a must IMO, for the offseason. A rotation of CC, Wang, Joba, Andy, and Mussina/Hughes/Rasner, is the tops in the league or close too it. The bullpen would be pretty good in ‘09 as well, with Mo, Robertson, Melacon, Veras, etc. All that would be left is overhauling the Offense/defense and they’ll be a real contender….

I completely agree, Shades, except for the part about overhauling the offense. Matsui and Damon both have one year left on their contracts, so barring a trade they will be back. Abreu’s likely gone after the season, unless he wants to come back for a lot less than the $16 million he’s making this year. He’s on a 4 year statistical decline, and the Yankees really aren’t getting the production out of him that they need from a corner outfielder. Even his walks are down, as he’s posted his lowest obp the last season and a half since 1997. Melky could easily be dealt as well, especially if Gardner can get on base a lot.

Without being accused as a thread-hijacker, Sabathia going to the Brew Crew is great for the Yankees. They need a money pitcher that can eat up innings and be overpowering at times. Something funny and yet true was actually uttered on the ESPN broadcast last night for the first time in a few years (it might have actually been FOX on Saturday, but the same applies) - ‘it’s amazing how your bullpen miraculously improves once you start getting consistently good length out of your starters’. A big 3 of Sabathia, Joba, and Wang would be almost unmatched. Anything the Yankees could then get out of Hughes/Kennedy/Mussina/Pettitte/Horne/McCutchen/etc. would be gravy.

Whoops, I just drooled on my keyboard.

Completely agree with you both. I think Pettitte will surely resign for one more year (he’s said that he wanted to pitch in the new stadium). The question mark is Moose. I wouldn’t mind having him for one more year (he seems to have figured out how to pitch w/out the 90s heater), but he’ll probably want 2 or more years and I’m not willing to do that w/ Hughes, Kennedy and McCutchen in the wings. Maybe a 2 year deal w/ a buyout? Signing Texeira would fix 1b, leaving only age at catcher and outfield as potential problems. There are no good 30 or below outfield free agents except for Adam Dunn and I’m not sure we want to commit big dollars to him. Matsui and Damon are too injury-prone and lack arms. I suspect that the Yanks will package some young arms and possibly Melky to obtain a top right fielder or prospect at that position.

Signing Sabathia is key, having him, Wang and Joba at the top and mix in the other young guys and one of the veterans and your staff is set, which ever guys dont make the rotation might have worth in the pen until Mussina (if they re-sign him) and Pettitte (assume he will sign one more 1yr contract) retire or just leave. They have enough young arms that i would like to see them trade them for position players, OF mostly. Austin Jackson might be ready by mid-season next year but he is really the CF of the future, we need a power corner OF, someone who projects into a 30hr guy thats only 23-25. I really dislike going after these guys near 30 (sheff and abreu), i want a cornerstone of the team, not guys who will only be good for 4 yrs, we need our roberto kelly for paul oneil trade…

Money mike, i liker your style. But the only guy like that is Matt Holiday who would cost the entire farm. I mean, your lookin at AJAX and Kennedy as a starting point.

One could try and pry Kemp away from LA. If the Yanks do sign CC and Wang shows he’s healthy again, some of the Yanks pitching prospects could be used to help out the OF situation. The key to that would seem to be guys like Kennedy, Horne, etc. pitching well & staying healthy so they’re decent trade chips again. Right now, you can’t put together a respectable package for Kemp with those guys, b/c they’ve been hurt, ineffective, or both. I’d still like to keep Hughes.

Tex would fix 1st base but there is still an age problem at SS.
Move Jeter to a corner OF?
He does not have pwer but has an arm and radar to fly balls.
Let Abrue go and live 1 more year with Matsui and Damon splitting LF/DH

Hughes worries me. When was his last injury free season?

There are precedents for moving middle infielders to the outfield in their later years (Robin Yount, Craig Biggio). I’d be surprised if the Yanks did it as Jeter is such an iconic figure. I’m also not sure Hanky could live with a light hitting lineup featuring Alberto Gonzalez, Jeter, Gardner, Melky and Molina on some days.

A greater possibility might be to swap our pitching prospect for their OF prospect: ie. Kennedy/McCutchen for Carlos Gonzalez of the A’s or Brandon Jones of the Braves or perhaps a young, blocked outfielder like Chris Duncan of the Cards.

As for Jeter, I think we’ll have to live with a shortstop whose range is below average. His range factor is actually slightly better than league average this year (3.98 to 3.95) and he seems to be better going to his left. The errors look bad, but he’s been a consistent fielder his whole career so I think it’s fair to say that the errors will stop. I don’t think Alberto Gonzalez is a viable alternative (sorry, Ashish!)

As for Kemp, yeah he’s the type of guy we’d like to have, but I can’t see the Dodgers giving up a good young hitter when they’re 13th in the NL in runs scored.

Mike: keep in mind that O’Neill was 30 when the Yanks acquired him in ‘93 :) Sometimes you just uncover guys who are ready to explode or thrive in a different role, even at 28-32. I wouldn’t even give up on Shelley Duncan contributing to the OF mix next year with his good arm and natural power.
