Posada Starting at First Base

Joe Girardi has decided to start Jorge Posada at first base tonight (for the seventh time, according to Peter Abraham). There seems to be no question, now, that Jorge’s shoulder is such that he is completely incapable of catching. This further points to a need that I articulated in Moshe’s post for a bat at catcher. We simply cannot persist with Moeller wasting a spot on the roster and being forced to go with Wilson Betemit as our only bat on the bench. I suggested Gerald Laird, Max Ramirez, or Jarod Saltilamochachino as the there is only room for two of them at Texas (though Laird is currently DLed and due back w/in a week or so). These are the 2009 free agents at catcher, according to MLBTradeRumors.com (great site, btw). Maybe we could spin a deal for one of them? I wonder if this points to Jorge moving to first base full time next year and no Texeira after all. The sky is falling!! AAAAAaaaaahhhh!!!

I’m not worried about Jorge next year. He’ll get that shoulder fixed up via surgery and will be catching again.

Posada is 36. What did we expect? He’s best used as a DH, who can play first, and can act as an emergancy Catcher. I agree going after a catcher is a smart move, but we’ll be competing with the Red Sox on that for sure. Its blessing this blocks a massive contract for texiera. Look at his career numbers. While still solid, he’s already declined from where he was 5 years ago. Let Baltimore overpay him for the next 7 years.

This doesn’t necessarily mean Posada can’t play catcher.

This could just mean that Molina has been so hot defensively he’s too valuable to take behind the plate.

I agree with Joe G, Posada will get surgery in the offseason and will most likely be as good as new next season.

You can’t blame this on exclusively on his age, Shades. For his career, Posada has caught 29.2% of potential base stealers, and most people agree that 30% is “average”. Last season he was bad at 23.9%, but the year before was the highest of his career (aside from his part-time duty in 1999) at 37.3%. Expect him to work even harder with Tony Pena again during the offseason, and surgery should at least put his numbers back to where they were in ‘07. Don’t forget that Posada is one of the most intense, if not the most intense player on this roster, don’t think this isn’t killing him right now and that he won’t do everything in his power to get back to his ‘06 rate.

Have to disagree, Jon. Why else would they carry Moeller?

Cone was talking about this last night . He said Zimmer used to tell guys, that they were baseball players first and position came second.
Possada’s out of line, making a big deal out of this move to 1st.
Was it Sundays game, he came out to the mound when Molina did, and was telling the pitcher something while Molina was talking. He should just shut up and do his job whatever it is.

I think Having Molina behind the plate is the best thing for us right now. I do think that Posada will still be the catcher he has always been, one injury and people already are writing him off? the injury slowed him down that is all. He’s still productive. Who can we sign or trade for that is a whole lot better at catcher than Posada? Also who would be a better option if we don’t sign Mark Teixeira to play first?
