The Bronx Block

Matsui May Need Surgery, Damon Setback, Sky Falling

AP article posted on ESPN states that both of the injured Yankee outfielders are going to take at least a little longer to be back in the Bronx. This, um, this is not good.  The Yanks are just getting creamed by injuries this year.

Injuries this year and injuries last year. What else is new?

Time for Cashman to make some deals. I hope he can get a little aggressive in the trade market, get this team a good pitcher and make the team younger. Its probably wishful thinking. It was nice to see many many Yankee fans in Toronto last week. The Rogers Centre was flooded with Yankee fans. Unfortunately Saturday was the only good game.

There are not really any impact bats that are out there that are really worth going after so i have been thinking with all these injuries and assuming Matsui and Damon will be back eventually maybe the Yanks would be better off going after the next Ryan Ludwick, a guy in this late 20s or so, that is not a prospect anymore but may be able to produce at a high standard for a short period of time, much like Shelley Duncan did last year. A guy like this would not cost much and i think would be worth the gamble. The Yankees really dont have that type of guy right now, Lane is older and seems to be done at this point in his career, but someone with decent pop and can play a solid OF is all we are looking for, players like this arent hard to find, its just a matter of choosing the right one out of the large crop out there

Problem with Bonds other than the circus he would bring to NY is he cannot field very well anymore once or twice a week fine but the last thing this team needs is another DH that can only run one base at a time.

Yeah, with Bonds, Jorge, Giambi, Damon, and Matsui (maybe) on the same roster, who gets to DH on any given day?

I will prob go through AAA and see what players are out there that might be worth the yankees taking a look at sometime soon…

This is what happens with an aging team.

    Internal options?

Miranda has been tearing it up at AAA recently, for the IF… And Carson for the OF - more of a power option than the speed provided by Christian/Gardner…

They have the trade chips to make some upgrades to the line-up and land a good starter, so it will be interesting to see what they do…

Luckily, we’re also just over a month from Wang and Hughes likely being ready to return. It would be nice if Hughes can have a similar Sept to last year, and if Wang shines down the stretch.

Of course, Sept call-ups will be interesting this year, as we’ll probably get glimpses of McCutchen, Cox, Strickland (what a yr!), Melancon, and maybe even Jason Jones and AJAX..? What are ya’all’s thoughts for Sept call-ups - just 6 weeks away…

Bonds adds power, on-base percentage and increases the difficulty of the lineup. He can probably play left from time to time and DH the majority of the time when Giambi or Posada need a day off. When Damon is off the DL, he’d slot into the primary DH role. If you can get a minor league player for the same price as a Bonds, it should at least be considered as it helps the offense of this team which has been slumping as of late. Adding a guy who doesn’t expand the strike zone to this lineup, and maybe slot him 5th also make pitches have to pitch to A-Rod… I can see a lineup of

    Cabrera/Gardner CF/LF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    AROD 3B
    Bonds DH
    Giambi 1B
    Posada C
    Cano 2B
    Gardner/Cabrera LF/CF

It just extends your lineup, better than a minor leaguer would for this second half stretch… Its better than a trade as you don’t lose prospects and gain an experienced veteran. I also feel he’d be a better solution than Sexson and it’d be an only one year thing…. Its like getting a Ponson for practically nothing.. What’s to lose. If he acts up, release him. Its costing practically nothing!!!

I wish people would just forget about Bonds…

I want this team to get younger and better, preferably this year, with 1 or 2 moves by Cashman.

  12. Koch says:

The team will get younger, but fans won’t take a team that can’t compete. i’m not saying sign him for years. I was against signing a Bonds, since this team was set with hitting with Matsui at DH. However, now that season ending surgery is likely, the opening is there and i feel that a Bonds in his spot is better than anything else available at the given price (pro-rated league minimum). This isn’t no 22+ million dollar Clemens saga. This is an opportunity to add to the depth of a lineup….

Youth is Cashman’s movement… but its a paced movement. This team will not be like the Rays or the Marlins, that will never be acceptable. Ideally, you’d want transitional youth planted, and that is what is starting to happen. The rotation is getting younger as is the bullpen. But, the farm lacks position players with high upsides right now, so you have to use the free agency to fill these spots. Just they won’t be paying exuberant prices as the movement is pursued.

    How much would DeJesus cost?

  14. Koch says:

it would be a few prospects i bet. but i doubt he’s available. I’m sure he has a year or 2 left on arbitration and is the starting centerfielder, as gathwright still hasn’t gotten it together with the bat…

If we are going to have to give up a few prospects I would rather grab a guy like Jason Bay. Still, I think Cash should look into what it would cost for a young outfielder like Colby Rasmus. What do you think we would have to give up to get him?

Great discussion, guys. It inspired me to write a big post to keep it going and add some names, so keep it going on that post, too. Also be sure to check out http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/06/trade-market-su.html for some other names and info on guys who might be out there.
