Breaking News: C.C. Sabathia is Fat, Pitches Good
There’s a somewhat interesting CNNSI article here which talks about C.C.’s love of the west coast but then declares that it won’t have any impact on where he signs, so I’m not sure what the ultimate point is. It’s a little disconcerting to think of the possibility that Sabathia may just be engaging in the age-old ploy of using the Yankees to drive up the market, all the while knowing that he’ll never accept a N.Y. offer.
The best part of the article, however, is the picture they use. To quote Suzyn Waldman, “Oh my goodness gracious, he’s FAT!!” Actually, she didn’t say the last part, but she would if she saw this picture. You have to check it out. You can practically see the fat rippling all over his body. It’s almost as if the editor gave a bonus to the intern who could find the photo that made C.C. look the most obscenely, grossly overweight. Yuck, I guess that’s the downside of living in the public eye.

Even if Sabathia’s preference is a West Coast team, let’s look at those options:
1. Giants - not a chance the Giants will be in the bidding, especially after the Barry Zito fiasco.
2. A’s - not a chance the A’s will be in the bidding
3. Dodgers - Doubtful given their farm system has good young arms and they have a pretty decent pitching staff, but they are probably the only west coast team that has the money and might consider it.
4. Padres - No chance, they do not go after the big money free agents and have strong young pitching, they need offense
5. Angels - No chance, they have the best pitching around and do not need a high priced free agent arm
So, if he really does have a bias to the West Coast, not sure the West Coast has a bias towards him. I could see Texas going after him, maybe Philadelphia, maybe the Mets, maybe the Cubs, maybe Houston, but are any of those locations more preferable to someone that has a West Coast bias over the Yankees? I doubt it. And those pinstripes would be slimming too….

They’d have to be VERY slimming. Did you SEE that picture? :) Dodgers are a very real possibility. I’d generally agree with your assessment of the other teams. Seattle is also a possibility if they trade Bedard. Colorado has made forays into FA starters before. They might feel like now is their time to seize the moment. Sometimes a smaller market team can push all their chips in for a few years like Arizona did with Johnson/Schilling. I’d still consider the Yanks the favorite, though they might fall short to the Dodgers if he gives a West Coast discount. I don’t think Cash will be outbid, though.

Yea especially considering hanks earlier statements. The yankees are going to go all out this off season. Just watch.
And I don’t think he looks that fat lol.

I can’t see Seattle spending a lot of money on a free agent right now. I think they’ve realized they need to start over in the rebuilding process and are a long way from being a contender, so no point tying up a lot of money now. Sabathia would never sign with Colorado, that would make no point whatsoever. I would be very surprised if Arizona got into a bidding war with the big market teams. Also, with Webb and Haren locked in, they have far less of a need for a #1 starter. But I can see the Dodgers, if they decide to get into the competition, having the upper hand. So, I’ll just be hopeful that the Dodgers choose not to go after him and then ultimately, if the Yankees want him, they should have an equal playing field in their pursuit.
