Hughes in AAA Tonight, 2 Starts from Bigs?

Phil Hughes may be only 2 starts from the Major Leagues, according to Joe Girardi, in this article from Peter Abraham.  Pete also gives a link to video of tonight’s game, here, if you want to watch (hmmm, how can I possibly explain this to my girlfriend without being thoroughly eviscerated?  “You’re watching MINOR league baseball??!!??  Don’t you watch enough #$$@%%ing MAJOR league baseball as it is??”).  My take on bringing Phil H. up is articulated in the 1st post.  Agree, disagree, mock, deride, generally discuss amongst yourselves.

Phil can come in and be successful this year, but I’d rather he stay at AAA if possible. He was incredibly unlucky in his 6 starts this year. He was spotting his heater really well, but was getting squeezed by umps and guys were flaring little bloops and seeing eye grounders. His BABIP was .395!!! That’s ridiculously unlucky, especially considering the fact that few of the balls were hard hit.

His k/9 was very low for him (mid-5’s) and he was only throwing 2 pitches, so I theorize that he needs to develop the changeup in a nice, low pressure environment like AAA where he can feel free to make mistakes and experiment with pitches he doesn’t have confidence in, yet. I think that a major league return would set back his development because he won’t be able to work on his changeup at all. With the change adding to his arsenal, he should be able to fool hitters more, miss bats and get the k/9 up. Keep him down - for his sake - even though he can help us. Is that weird?

Personally, I was wondering how I was going to tell my girlfriend that I was going to be watching the Yankees, and Minor League baseball………….. at the same time.

    Should be an interesting night.

Hey, Joe, if you come up with a good excuse, let me know, cuz I’m flummoxed. I’m thinking of anonymously calling one of her friends and claim her bf is cheating on her. Maybe that will lead to a girl’s night out and a night of free baseball watching. Hmmm, is it worth breaking up a perfectly good relationship just to watch Phil Hughes pitch?

Can’t see holding Hughes back in 3A if he can help the big league club. If he’s got his fastball back, he can make a go of it with or without the changeup.

I’m for keeping Hughes at AAA, but what do I know about pitching development… it seems to me that it sounded great when they were calling him the youngest pitcher in the majors, second youngest player, but now I figure why rush him? He hasn’t shown he can stay healthy for an extended period of time. Keep in 3A ball and work on conditioning and strength, and without all the pressure of playing in front of 50,000+ every night.

This season has sucked. I hate injuries.

If he has his command and stuff back and judging from these last two starts (including tonight’s), he does, then I bring him up to the majors.

His 06 form (which he looks close to right now) was good enough for the majors.

Phil Hughes has a cutter now.
