Matt Gorgen In Pitch f/x
Rays pitching prospect Matt Gorgen finally made an appearance in a ballpark with the pitch f/x set up. This appearance came in the Rising Stars game as Gorgen would pitch one and one-third innings allowing a walk, two groundouts, a lineout, and a called strikeout on three pitches. Note that Gorgen is best relief prospect for the Rays if you exclude a rehabbing Jake McGee.
The spin movement with pitch ids.
A four pitch repertoire, Gorgen features a straight four-seam fastball averaging about 92 mph, a nice moving changeup tailing away from the fastball and clocked around 83 mph which is a good 9 mph difference off the fastball. Although we have only two breaking pitches registered, Gorgen did indeed throw a plus slider and a hard curve inĀ his start as correctly stated in the scouting reports. His slider was at 83 mph while his curve was at Wade Davis speed at 78 mph and getting 16 inches of vertical break from the fastball.
Now his fastball isn’t blazing past hitters, so command is going to be a big part of his game.
It is not too good that he kept the fastball up, but he did not leave too much over the plate. He really picked that right-hand corner where he induced all three balls in play. All his swinging strikes were off the fastball.
Remember that Gorgen just completed his second season in the minors and he is likely to reach AAA Durham at some point in 2010.
