Home Run Trot's June All-Star Team: Pitchers

Choosing the pitchers for June's team was just as tough as making some of the decisions for the position players. Some of the players below, like Zack Greinke and Jason Frasor, are making their third straight appearance on the team. Others, like Josh Johnson, are making the team for the first time. Take a look and leave your comments. I think it's a great pitching staff.

*Stats as of 7 PM EST July 2

STARTERS:

SP: Zack Greinke, Kansas City
Yes, Greinke had a tough June going 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA and .290 batting average against. Yet he still leads all starters with a 1.95 ERA. He's also tied for the league lead in wins with 10. Greinke has given up only 25 runs. Thus, he makes the team for the third month in a row.

SP: Tim Lincecum, San Francisco
Lincecum is behind Greinke with 8 wins. But he leads all starters with 132 strikeouts. He has a 2.37 ERA, the third lowest overall, and has given up only 30 earned runs. Lincecum had his best month of the season in June. He went 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA and .202 batting average against. Lincecum is one reason why the Giants are ahead in the NL Wild Card race.

SP: Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants
Cain joins his Giants teammate on this team. Cain has 9 wins this season. He has only 88 strikeouts but has a 2.48 ERA. He also went 3-1 in June with a .192 batting average against.

SP: Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays
Yes, Halladay is currently injured. His overall production this season demonstrates why he gets a place on this team. He's 10-2 with a 1.05 WHIP and 95 strikeouts. His ERA dropped from 2.77 to 2.56 during June. Halladay makes the team for the second straight month.

SP: Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins
Johnson has "only" 7 wins this season. He also has only one loss. He went 3-0 in June with a 2.95 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Overall, he has 97 strikeouts, a 1.13 WHIP, a 2.76 ERA, and a .228 batting average against.

Cuba's Aroldis Chapman Defects

Jorge Arangure Jr. of ESPN The Magazine reported today left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman has defected from the Cuban national team.

According to the report, Chapman defected from the team while they were in the Netherlands competing in a tournament, walking right out of the front door of the team's hotel in Rotterdam.

"I walked out easily, right through the hotel door, and I hopped in a car and left," Chapman told cubaencuentro.com, a Spanish web site. "It was easy. Now the plan is to sign with a Major League team."

Chapman is scheduled to fly to Miami on Thursday, according to a source.

This is huge news on this winter's free agency front because, depending on who you ask, Chapman is the most-hyped player to defect from Cuba since Jose Contreras, but appears to have a ceiling far beyond that of the Chicago White Sox veteran right-hander.

Chapman, 21, is a menacing southpaw who brings a fastball that has been clocked as high as 102 mph to go along with a slider and a curveball. Arangure's report suggests that Chapman may need some development time in the minor leagues because his secondary pitches are "only average."

But Buster Olney, also a senior writer for ESPN The Magazine, wrote in his blog Thursday morning that some scouts have labeled Chapman's slider and curveball as both "plus" pitches. Olney said that some talent evaluators even see Chapman as a "left-handed (Stephen) Strasburg." That's how insanely talented this kid is.

I saw some of Chapman in this year's World Baseball Classic, and he was nasty. His fastball explodes on the hitters -- I guess anything will explode at 100 mph -- and when he throws his secondary pitches for strikes, hitters have no chance.

Chapman posted a 4.03 ERA in 118 1/3 innings last year as a 20-year-old pitching in the National Series in Cuba. Unlike other defectors, Chapman's baby face actually gives some sort of evidence that he is as young as he claims to be.

The one knock on Chapman is his maturity. He has been known to show too much emotion and frustration on the mound -- with the umpire's strike zone, for example -- and doesn't always give his manager, coaches, and teammates the respect they deserve. But at 21-years-old, that isn't all that surprising. But that alone would make it absolutely necessary he apply some polish in the minor leagues.

How does this effect the upcoming free agent class? Well, the two biggest fish in the market were supposed to be Oakland A's outfielder Matt Holliday and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher John Lackey.

But with only s mediocre season thus far in Oakland, a little hype has come off of Holliday and if free agency were to open today, he wouldn't be commanding the dollars that he and his agent Scott Boras were expecting.

Lackey, on the other hand, is set to cash in with a healthy season. But that's the hold up. Lackey has battled early season elbow issues for the last two seasons, and I'm not sure if anybody is completely confident in the health of his elbow.

Nonetheless, with teams so starved for quality pitching, Lackey will get his money if he stays off of the DL for the remainder of the season.

But if Chapman is part of this winter's bidding, he will undoubtedly be the big fish in the pond. Estimates are already coming in between $30 million and $60 million for Chapman, but there is no real precedent for a pitcher this young and this talented who has already pitched on the national stage and has been relatively exposed.

You can expect big market clubs such as the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, and Cubs to be interested in Chapman.

The Red Sox should be in the mix, too, but I wonder how eager they are to spend exorbitantly on another international product that comes this hyped, considering that they paid a total sum of $103 million to get Daisuke Matsuzaka to Boston and he hasn't met expectations.

The A's probably won't be players but the White Sox could be, as both clubs have been known to make dents in international signings (although signing Chapman would not be like signing a 17-year-old prospect).

One issue facing Chapman's stay in the United States is that all Cuban players are required to hand over their passports to Cuban officials when making an appearance outside of Cuba. Assuming Chapman followed regular procedures, he may have a difficult time establishing residency in the U.S.

Teddy Mitrosilis is the author of Ballpark Banter.
Money Talks in this Trade Market

This trading season, money is going to be the biggest issue around. I know what you're thinking: what else is new? It's true, money is always a big reason why players are traded. But, this year, it is even a bigger reason why deals may or may not be made, and is a key factor in how much a team gets in return.

With many teams looking to cut payroll, a team willing to spend money will control this trade market. There are two seperate scenarios to spending money to help yourself this deadline season.

1. Covering Outgoing Players

When a team deals a player away, they can often times be asked to cover some of the players remaining contract. If a team is willing to take on a bigger chunk of an outgoing player's contract, they may be able to get better prospects back in return.

2. Covering Incoming Players

Sometimes, you just need to acquire a player, but you don't have the prospects to do so. This year, you may be in luck! If you really want a player this year, you may just be able to pay for him. Sure, you'll need to throw in a crap prospect or two to help the other team see it your way, but you will be able to get the deal done.

There are some players who are going to fit this bill. Matt Holliday, for one, will need someone to fit one of the scenario's to go anywhere. My guess is that Billy Beane will foot the bill in order to see higher caliber talent come back for Holliday.

On the team side, the Red Sox are in a good place. They are willing to add salary, so they may be able to pry a player away from others without giving up prized prospects. This works great for them, because they are probably going after a mid level player to solidify their bench, and could take on most, if not all, of his salary from a team looking to cut it. The Phillies are another team in this boat, but they are looking for a starting pitcher.

Fantasy Links of the Day

Plenty of good links can be found in the Links tonight. I think for the first time, I've found conflicting reports on a pitcher. That pitcher would be Gio Gonzalez. For those of you whose teams are injury-riddled, Stephania Bell's Injury Blog discusses the big injuries of the week and KFFL talks about injuries by position.

Closer Links:

Relief Efforts discusses Chris Perez's chances to be Cleveland's closer. Eric Karabell has some bad news for those of you who rushed to your league's waiver wire to get Perez after the Indians traded for him. Some very good prospect links can be found after the jump. Of course, the usual next day links can be found at the end of the post to help you prepare for Thursday.

Hitter Links:

T.I.P.S. says don't give up on Hanley Ramirez and that it's time to send Adrian Gonzalez packing.

Injury Links:

KFFL's Injury News.

Stephania Bell's Injury Blog holds some bad news for Carlos Beltran owners as well as other injury news.

Tigers defeat a whole bunch of Gonzalezes

It's pretty late and I am pretty tired. Luckily for you, I took notes on this one. Instead of synthesizing them into some sort of paragraph system I am just going to throw them in here as-is and you are going to deal with it.

--Gio Gonzalez started this game for the A's. Edgar Gonzalez finished it. In between they had three innings of non-Gonzalezes, so this was a mostly Gonzalez-pitched game on the Athletic's side of things.

--Armando was rockin' the one long sleeve early. His throwing arm was sleeved, his glove arm was bare. Jacoby Ellsbury did that a lot last year. Later in the game Armando dropped the other sleeve so that he was sleevily balanced.

--Ryan Raburn got an error because he dropped a ball in foul territory. I know why that's an error, but still, harsh.

--NOMAR! I forget about him sometimes, take my Red Sox fan card away immediately. And Orlando Cabrera is on the same team, in the very same lineup, oh my goodness, I did not realize that. How awkward. Do you think Orlando Cabrera sometimes starts telling a story to his teammates and he says, "So back in 2004 in Boston..." and then he kind of awkwardly trails off and everyone tries to not look at Nomar? Do you think that happens? I think it does. That '04 team was the kind of team that would have a lot of stories in it.

Also for some reason it is hilarious to me that Nomar is wearing number 1 now.

--Such a good game for Placido Polanco. He was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored, including his first inning two-run homer. Polanco homeruns are like little freaks of nature, so it is always nice to see them supplemented with other solid hitting.

He has the exact same batting average as Curtis Granderson does right now (.259), which freaks me out for some reason... shouldn't Curtis be higher, with the kind of year Polanco has had? PANICKY PANIC. Curtis' OPS is a lot higher, though (.704 vs .821).

--Armando has been having Bondo-esque first innings. This is especially evident since tonight he settled down so nicely after that first inning. I almost want to have him talk it out with Bondo, except clearly that will not work because a) Bondo never really worked out his mental pitching issues and b) Bondo does not communicate well, or sometimes at all.

Armando also walked six guys today (in 6.1 innings... he only struck out five), which is not good. Not good at all. But he did get his second consecutive win, which IS good, considering how long he went between wins prior to that last one.

--Every time Adam Everett takes off his helmet I am struck anew by how glorious his hair is. That is some serious blonde-streaked fluff he's got up there. He has, like, volume and bounce and other things that people desperately try to get out of their shampoos.

--Rod Allen says that Matt Holliday has "no body fat". He says it with relish.

--I am so heartily sick of those Foundation for a Better Life ads. I don't particularly enjoy having 'behavioral values' shoveled into my face while I'm trying to watch a baseball game. To be quite honest I find the whole thing skeevy, partly because its founder/funder is skeevy, and partly because I just object to the tone of the whole campaign itself. I'm a fan of a baseball team that employs Fernando Rodney, I am not going to get excited over someone cloyingly insisting that I take "optimism" and "pass it on," you moose-lickers.

--A shot of Fu-Te Ni on the bullpen bench. He appeared to be either talking to himself, or singing to himself. Freddy Dolsi was sitting next to him. They were not speaking to one another.

--They have got to get a new font for the on-screen player stats, Rod Allen can't read them half the time. Today he couldn't tell if Zoom had allowed 16 or 18 walks because the 6 looked ambiguous (it was 16 before the game).

--Magglio didn't look so hot at the plate tonight, he was taking some bad swings, didn't seem to be seeing the ball well at all. His one hit was pretty bloopy, if I may use that word. So clearly cutting off the hair was not some sort of panacea, THINK ABOUT THAT NEXT TIME, MAGGLIO.

--Zoom had to momentarily hold things up in the 8th so that he could take his glove off and properly bite a loose bit of fingernail or skin or something off of his throwing hand. He was shaking his hand a ton, and after the inning ended he had a huge crowd of Tigers and Tigers trainers staring at his thumb in the dugout. Inge was all over his shoulder.

No word as of right now what it was, a blister or a hangnail or what. I would imagine there probably will be in an hour or so, but screw you guys, I'm going to sleep as soon as I post this.

--No hitting at all yesterday, so much hitting today. Whatever, Tigers. Clearly I don't understand you and you don't want me to understand. Be that way.

--In the 9th inning, Miguel Cabrera swung so hard that he let go of the bat and it went flying... but he made contact. The ball ended up being caught by the second baseman, who backpedaled out to the outfield grass, but Miggy was watching the bat and didn't move from home. What if it had landed, or the fielder had dropped it? So weird. I can't remember the last time I saw a player lose his bat and make contact, usually it happens on wild misses.

--Someone in the crowd near the end of the game was screaming like a loon during Tigers pitcher windups.

--FERNANDO. This was a textbook example of What He Does in his ongoing Attempts to Kill Us All.

Polanco had singled in a run in the top of the 9th, so the score going into the bottom of the inning was 5-1 Tigers and, thus, no longer a save situation. Fernando was all warmed up, though, so Leyland put him in. Rod and Mario say a bunch of things about him having a quick, clean inning so that he could pitch in tomorrow's day game if needed.

He immediately walks Nomar on five pitches. I begin grinding my teeth. Jack Cust flies out to left. I temporarily cease dental destruction. I even dare to think something along the lines of, "It's late, maybe he will just finish the game and I can go to sleep."

So of course (OF COURSE) he throws a few pitches to Mark Ellis and then Ellis hits a two-run homer to make it 5-3. And then Adam Kennedy singles. Why? Why prolong the agony? Because this is what Fernando Rodney does. THIS IS WHAT HE DOES. You have probably already looked at the boxscore for this game and so you know that we turned a double play to get out of the inning and did not lose, but Fernando had to come in and give up a walk and two hits and two runs. He basically forced Leyland to get Brandon Lyon warm in the bullpen, in case things got even more epically dire.

He only (?) threw 19 pitches, so it's at least theoretically possible that he would be available in the Wednesday afternoon game, but even if there were no actual negative impacts to the Tigers' record, this was still an infuriating performance. He drives me clean out of my mind. WHY DOES HE DO THIS? I ALREADY LIVED THROUGH TODD JONES, OK, I THOUGHT THAT TIME WAS OVER.

--Twice in the first two innings, the Tigers had a man caught out between third base and home. TWICE! That's unacceptable. If it's bad to make an out at third, it's even worse to make an out halfway to home. I don't want to see those sorts of shenanigans again.

Wednesday's Games of the Day

July begins with several teams either looking to extend winning streaks or stop losing streaks. San Francisco and St. Louis continue a series that impacts the early Wild Card race. Colorado looks to turn their luck around against the Dodgers. Plenty of pitchers are looking for win number eight, nine, or ten on July 1. Nyjer Morgan joins the Nationals. Adam Jones and Marco Scutaro begin July looking to end recent slumps. Those, and plenty of other good storylines, can be found in Wednesday's Games of the Day.

Washington at Florida: The Nyjer Morgan era begins in Washington. He and his new teammates will face the 7-1 Josh Johnson. Johnson is 4-0 agains the Nats in his career. Nick Johnson has a .556 batting average against Josh Johnson.

Tampa Bay at Toronto: The Rays keep rolling. They defeated Toronto 4-1 on Tuesday running their win streak to 8 games and handing Toronto their fourth straight loss. The series finale features James Shields and Ricky Romero, two very exciting pitchers. Shields is 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA in his last three starts against the Jays. Look for him to turn it around thanks to his team being hot right now. He'll get help from Marco Scutaro who is in the midst of a 1-for-16 slump with his last hit coming on June 26.

Boston at Baltimore: Josh Beckett goes for win number 10 against Brad Bergesen. Bergesen was 3-0 in June. Beckett is 4-1 lifetime at Camden Yards. I'm looking for Adam Jones to rebound from a poor June. Doing it against Josh Beckett might not happen. Teammate Luke Scott has a .545 batting average with 1 homer and 3 RBI against Beckett.

it's Ni time

photo illustration by Samara Pearlstein

The nice thing about this game was that, because it was in Oakland, I did not have to sit through 9 full innings. That's about the only nice thing, though.

--So you know how yesterday I said that we should get to see Fu-Te Ni fairly soon, since the Tigers go through bullpen pitchers like a house cat goes through kitty litter? Yeah. That happened.

In his big league debut, Fu-Te Ni pitched 1.2 innings, coming on in the 5th in relief of a struggling Rick Porcello. Ni allowed only one hit, but this was most unfortunately a homerun off the bat of Ryan "Not Mark" Sweeney. The Tigers were down 5-1 before the homer and 6-1 after it. As those are almost equally impossible deficits for the Tigs to make up, it wasn't a big deal. Ni also struck out 3 and didn't walk anyone. It took him 27 pitches to get through 6 batters, which is not bad at all.

He didn't look like he was overtly freaking out. FSND had a shot of him in the dugout afterwards, doing an elaborate pantomime with Gerald Laird, which seemed to have something to do with keeping pitches down and making sure to follow through on the pitching motion. At least the language barrier is being cheerfully tackled with grappling hooks, even if no one's exactly vaulting lustily over it just yet.

Overall it was an encouraging first appearance. I for one look hopefully forward to a productive career for Fu-Te Ni, filled with Monty Python jokes.

--Raburn moved from left to first in the bottom of the 8th, and was using Miguel Cabrera's glove. I don't know if this is because he doesn't have a first baseman's glove of his own (or he didn't bring it on the road), or because he just felt like using Miggy's glove, perhaps as a sort of safety blanket. I would understand that.

--There's a Curtis Granderson Q&A thing over at the Big Stew right now. How amazing would it be to see Granderson on an episode of Psych? Holy cats. I might die of Amazing Overdose if that were to happen.

I agree with him that the Lowell Spinners' ballpark is really nice. And his statements about ballplayer book readin' (lack thereof) are very sad. The response to the last question is A+, though, you should check it out just for that.

--Magglio stole a base today. Many lulz. Inge also stole a base, on his gimpy leg.

--Basically terrible hitting from the Tigers in this one. How? Why? Who knows. This team is so damn inconsistent, not to get all Joe Morgan-y on you or anything. FSND had a shot of Jim Leyland and Lloyd McClendon in the dugout. Here is Rod's take on the scene:

"Jim's askin' Lloyd what happened, and he can't say nothin', just shakes his head... that's a beautiful shot. He couldn't say nothin'. Just shook his head."

It was a very sad, disbelieving shake of the head. Most eloquent.

--Mario: This might be the smallest crowd the Tigers have played in front of this year.
Rod: And a lot of them are Tigers fans too...

The official attendance tally for this game was 10,563, and the actual number may well have been less than that.

--The Tigers starting rotation right now has an average age of 24. The youngest member of the rotation is Rick Porcello, at the tender (under)age of 20, and the oldest pitcher is Armando Galarraga, a veritable geezer at the advanced age of 27. Just think about that for a while.

--Nate is having surgery on Tuesday. Now the mass is being described as "fibrous", so... yeah, I still have no idea what it actually is. How crazy would it be if it was a teratoma and there were, like, teeth and hair and eyeballs growing in Nate's arm? Let's believe that it is until we hear otherwise.

--I keep forgetting that Jason Giambi is still in baseball. So grotesque. I wish there was a way to watch this series without accidentally seeing his face sometimes when I look at the TV screen.

MLB Notebook Looking for Part Time Writers

This is an official announcement for MLB Notebook:

MLB Notebook is looking for Part Time writers. I can't put a number on how many we are hoping to add, because if we get 10 really great writers that apply, I will be tempted to add them all. Here are some details on what being a Part Time writer is all about:

2-3 Posts a week - Could be more if you have the drive to do it, but we only expect 2 each week.

Love of baseball - If you don't love the game, we don't love you.

Writing Experience - We would prefer to add writers who have a proven body of work.

Volunteer - Technically this is a volunteer gig, because we have no real money to pay anyone. However, this could change depending on site revenue. But, even though you aren't being paid, the exposure you get here is beneficial.

This gig is great for someone who writes about a single team for another site (like Ricky does), and wants a place to write about other teams and baseball in general.

If you are interested please contact Zach via email: sportsnotebook@gmail.com

Heyman: Cliff Lee, Holliday, DeRosa, Pujols

Jon Heyman has some valuable information in his article today:

The Indians have started to take calls regarding Cliff Lee, but GM Mark Shapiro says a deal is "unlikely to almost impossible."

Matt Holliday's $13.5 MM salary makes it difficult for him to be traded without the A's chipping in some cash. And chances are that won't happen unless the prospects they get back are great. The Braves, Mets, Giants and Cardinals could all be in on the Holliday sweepstakes.

Mark DeRosa makes sense for the Cards, and the Mets, Giants, Braves, Cubs and Tigers should go after him.

Albert Pujols has only one hit this year with two outs and a runner in scoring position. Nick Evans got two in two days for the Mets.

Thoughts:

Cliff Lee should be dealt to the NL soon, but they are probably asking for too much in return.

As Jonathan mentioned, Holliday won't be an A in 2010, so it just comes to down to a trade or letting him walk for picks. My guess is he's dealt, and the Braves make a load of sense. Hell, maybe Beane is a Francouer fan?

DeRosa will be dealt, it's just a matter of when and where.

Stop throwing out situational statistics for Albert. He is the best hitter in baseball, and has 25 walks this year in the same situation. He gets the job done.

Friday Notes: White Sox, Holliday, Manny

Here are some assorted notes from around the league:

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times says White Sox starter Jose Contreras is drawing trade interest. Other teams are waiting to see if the Sox become sellers as the deadline approaches.

Joe Stiglich of the San Jose Mercury News ponders whether Matt Holliday's struggles at the plate are hurting his trade value.

Nationals manager Manny Acta has received a vote of confidence from team president Stan Kasten.

Paul Konerko thinks the only interleague series the White Sox should play is the White Sox-Cubs series. "I wish the only interleague games were the Cubs," Konerko said.

Andy Sonnanstine or David Price could be sent to the minors when Scott Kazmir returns to the Rays pitching staff.

Bill Shaikin of the LA Times reports Mannywood will return when Manny Ramirez comes back from his suspension.

My thoughts:

Contreras is good, but I don't know if he can be a dominant starter at this point. The trade deadline makes teams do funny things and Contreras' 2-1 record and 1.23 ERA since his minor league stint would attract some GMs. I just don't see him as a big game pitcher.

Holliday isn't going to be an Oakland A come Spring Training 2010. It's just a matter of what Beane gets for him: players via trade or compensatory draft picks.

Ah, the comforting "vote of confidence." You realize Acta won't make it out of the All-Star break now, right?

There's at least some truth to what Konerko is saying. Interleague was created to showcase the New York, Chicago, LA, Giants-A's, Reds-Indians, and Rangers-Astros matchups. The rest of the series' are to generate interest in matchups and teams fans don't usually see their team play.

My initial reaction is Sonnanstine since he's done nothing to prove his worth this season. Also, the Rays rotation is currently righty heavy. Keeping Price would give them two lefties and give Sonnanstine a chance to fix himself at Durham.

Hooray? Hopefully they add some kind of PED incentive to the promotion now.

The A's are sellers. But who do they have to sell?

Going into Wednesday's game against San Francisco, the Oakland Athletics are 31-39. That record puts them in last place in the AL West. They're 6.5 games out in the division and only 7 games out of the AL Wild Card. We all know Billy Beane is their general manager, so look for trades if they don't improve. Chances are the A's are out of the AL West race at this point. The problem is they don't really have many pieces to trade outside of Matt Holliday.

Holliday is obviously the top candidate for the A's to trade away and most likely will be traded by the end of next month. Holliday has rebounded nicely from an April slum that saw him hit only .240, slug only .360, hit only 1 homer, and drive in only 12 RBI. He currently has 8 home runs, 39 RBI, and a .270 batting average. Holliday has clearly picked up his pace since May began. He's projecting for 19 homers, 91 RBI, 30 doubles, and 84 runs. Without creating trade rumors of my own, although that would be pretty cool, Holliday's name has been "linked" to the Giants and Angels most recently. Jayson Stark recently said in a column that the A's will trade Holliday because that's why they originally traded for him. "So if the A's don't make up significant ground in the next few weeks, he will be out of there. After that, it will be a matter of whether someone wants to meet the price tag."

No Really? Giants Looking for Hitters

A note from MLB Trade Rumors:

According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News Giants GM Brian Sabean knows what he wants to trade for, he just doesn't expect to acquire anybody until the days leading up to the July 31st trade deadline. Few teams are completely out of the race, so Sabean said he expects a late-developing market.
[...]
Sabean has created a "narrow list" of players he'd like to acquire, but said he doesn't plan on giving up top young talent for a two or three month rental. The Giants can take on salary, so Baggarly asked if Matt Holliday, who makes $13.5MM this year, is a target. Sabean didn't comment on the A's left fielder, but said his list "is more right-handed than left-handed."

When Bengie Molina is your best hitter, and hitting clean-up, you might need some hitting help.

Matt Holliday would be a good fit for them, if not for the salary concerns. Are there any other high impact bats on the free agent market right now? Not that come to mind easily.

Perhaps they make a different type of move, bringing in Adrian Beltre to play third and move Sandoval to first. Beltre may not be a great offensive threat, but his defense and return to the NL West could spark the Giants.

Links For Tuesday; College World Series, Jackson, MacPhail

I'm
not sure about you, but I love the College World Series. Just love it.
And last night's series finals-opening match-up between L.S.U. and Texas was one
of the most exciting games I've watched in a long time.

The
Tigers came out on top, defeating the Longhorns 7-6 in an 11-inning
thriller. Trailing 6-4 with only one out left to work with in the top
of the ninth, L.S.U. sophomore D.J. LeMahieu
delivered a clutch two-run double down the left field line that sent
the game into extra innings. LeMahieu, who also hit a solo homer in the
seventh, would then score the game-winning run in the 11th. After
leading the frame off with a walk, he came home on a two-out
single off the bat of freshman center fielder Mikie Mahtook (talk about a real baseball name).

The two teams combined to hit seven solo home runs total.

It was an incredible finish, and I loved watching each team hit.

L.S.U.
can really swing, by the way. The Tigers hit .317/.408/.519 with a .927
OPS as a team in 71 games in 2009, which is pretty incredible.

CWS Links:

Texas will try to forget the epic loss, writes Jim Henry.

Mark Schlabach has a nice piece on Mahtook, whose father played middle linebacker for the Tigers in the 70s but died of a heart attack 16 years ago.

Mahtook battled like a veteran, writes Joe Lemire.

Chicago White Sox first-round pick Jared Mitchell, who also played football for the Tigers, collected two hits on the night, including a run-scoring triple.

MLB Notes:

Chuck Johnson argues
that the New York Yankees should promote center field prospect Austin
Jackson. Johnson makes a decent case, but I'm not completely sold yet.
Jackson is hitting .342/.410/.451 with an .861 OPS and 12 stolen bases
in as many chances in 62 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In
addition, he's an excellent defender in center field who, as a sum of
his parts, is going to be quite valuable for the Yankees in the near
future. For right now, however, I think that he could still use more
development against International League pitching in order to allow for
him to improve upon his strike zone recognition and contact problems; he
has already struck out 66 times in 267 plate appearances. While his 8.8
BB% is decent, I can't imagine that a 29.1 percent strike out rate will
improve at the highest level. As well, he has only one home run to his
name right now; granted, he has collected 15 doubles and four triples,
but for a kid who scouts feel could grow into 10-to-15-homer power in
the majors, it's a bit concerning.

The duo of Melky Cabrera and
Brett Gardner isn't anything worth writing home about, certainly, but
Jackson needs more time to refine his skills.

Rich Kubato had an interesting discussion with Baltimore Orioles GM Andy MacPhail.

Jorge Says No! wonders if the time is right for the A's to sell high on Dallas Braden.

Bad news about the Moneyball movie.

The Giants are considering having top catching prospect Buster Posey bypass Double-A.

Akinori Iwamura may yet to see another day in Rays uniform, after all. Iwamura, whose option for 2010 may not be picked up, was expected to be miss the remainder of the year. After surgery on Monday, however, doctors discovered that the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee was only partially torn and he could return in six to eight weeks.
