Fantasy Baseball: Toronto Blue Jays P Ricky Romero

With the various injuries that the Toronto Blue Jays have suffered within their pitching staff, the team has had to look to unexpected sources for help. Rookie left-hander Ricky Romero has answered the call so far.

Romero is 6-3 with a 2.85 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in 11 starts (72.2 innings) this season. He has shown good strikeout ability (7.6 K/9) and exhibited solid control (3.0 BB/9) as well. Romero spent some time on the DL himself earlier in the season due to an oblique strain, but has shown no lingering effects of the injury.

Over his last three starts, Romero has gone 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA along with a 20/8 K/BB ratio over 22 innings and over his last six starts he is 4-1 with a 1.91 ERA with a 40/14 K/BB ratio over 42.1 innings. In his most recent outing on Wednesday, he went eight innings while allowing only four hits as he struck out seven and walked four and got the win against the Tampa Bay Rays.

In nine of Romero's 11 starts, including his last six outings, he has delivered a quality start by going at least six innings and allowing three runs or less.

Romero is definitely worth adding in all leagues if you need the help and he is available, which is becoming increasingly unlikely. The Blue Jays' offense seems capable of providing adequate run support even if he doesn't continue his recent streak of 15 scoreless innings.

Home Run Trot's June All-Star Team: Pitchers

Choosing the pitchers for June's team was just as tough as making some of the decisions for the position players. Some of the players below, like Zack Greinke and Jason Frasor, are making their third straight appearance on the team. Others, like Josh Johnson, are making the team for the first time. Take a look and leave your comments. I think it's a great pitching staff.

*Stats as of 7 PM EST July 2

STARTERS:

SP: Zack Greinke, Kansas City
Yes, Greinke had a tough June going 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA and .290 batting average against. Yet he still leads all starters with a 1.95 ERA. He's also tied for the league lead in wins with 10. Greinke has given up only 25 runs. Thus, he makes the team for the third month in a row.

SP: Tim Lincecum, San Francisco
Lincecum is behind Greinke with 8 wins. But he leads all starters with 132 strikeouts. He has a 2.37 ERA, the third lowest overall, and has given up only 30 earned runs. Lincecum had his best month of the season in June. He went 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA and .202 batting average against. Lincecum is one reason why the Giants are ahead in the NL Wild Card race.

SP: Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants
Cain joins his Giants teammate on this team. Cain has 9 wins this season. He has only 88 strikeouts but has a 2.48 ERA. He also went 3-1 in June with a .192 batting average against.

SP: Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays
Yes, Halladay is currently injured. His overall production this season demonstrates why he gets a place on this team. He's 10-2 with a 1.05 WHIP and 95 strikeouts. His ERA dropped from 2.77 to 2.56 during June. Halladay makes the team for the second straight month.

SP: Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins
Johnson has "only" 7 wins this season. He also has only one loss. He went 3-0 in June with a 2.95 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Overall, he has 97 strikeouts, a 1.13 WHIP, a 2.76 ERA, and a .228 batting average against.

Friday's Games of the Day

The Fourth of July Weekend kicks off with a full schedule of games. The Yankees look to start a new winning streak against the Blue Jays. The Brewers and Cubs continue their seesaw NL Central battle. The Brewers need wins to stay ahead in the division because the Cardinals and Reds are battling for positioning in the division. The Mets and Phillies begin a series that will determine which team is in first in the NL East on Monday. These games, and many more, can be found in Friday's Games of the Day.

Toronto at New York Yankees: The Mariners broke the Yankees seven-game winning streak but are 7-3 in their last 10 games. They look to have A.J. Burnett and company start a new win streak against the Jays and Brian Tallet. Four of Hideki Matsui's 6 hits off Tallet have gone for extra bases, with one being a long ball.

Milwaukee at Chicago Cubs: The Cubs took the first game of this series on Thursday. The Brewers and Jeff Suppan look to even the season series back up at 4-4 against Carlos Zambrano. Derek Lee has 21 hits off Suppan with 11 extra base hits (4 home runs). J.J. Hardy is only 2-for-19 against Zambrano. Mike Cameron is worse, 1-for-13 against Zambrano.

New York Mets at Philadelphia: The Phillies have lost 3 straight and are 3-7 in their last 10 games. They're now tied with the Marlins for first place in the NL East. The Mets find themselves only 1 game behind. This series will determine who's in first place in the division come Monday. The Phillies are relying on Rodrigo Lopez to get the win. Wonderful.

Home Run Trot's June All-Star Team: Position Players

The monthly All-Star team is another feature I'm bringing over from my old blog. For those unfamiliar with my previous work, here are the April and May posts. I'm bringing the All-Star team over to MLB Notebook with a twist. It's going to be divided into two posts. One for the position players and a second for the pitching staff. Now that I'm working with some other great writers, these monthly posts can properly be used to start a discussion.

*All stats are compiled as of 7 PM EST on July 1.

Catcher: Bengie Molina, San Francisco Giants
Making this selection was not tough, unlike April and May. Molina is making his second appearance on this team. He leads all catchers with 10 home runs and 45 RBI. He also has 14 doubles and a triple. His numbers stayed pretty even with his April and May numbers. He's also sporting a .996 fielding percentage with only 2 errors.

First Base: Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals
Pujols makes his third straight appearance on this team. Pujols leads MLB in home runs (30) and RBI (77). He's also scored 61 runs and has a .332 batting average. This pick was a no-brainer.

Second Base: Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies
Second base has proven to be perhaps the toughest pick to make. Utley makes the team for a second time because he picked up the pace in June with 6 home runs, 19 RBI and a .320 average. He's tied for second among second basemen with 51 RBI. He leads all second basemen with a .999 OPS.

Third Base: Pablo Sandoval, San Francisco Giants
Sandoval takes the spot from Evan Longoria on the strength of his June. In 94 June at-bats, Sandoval had 8 home runs, 20 RBI, 9 doubles, and a .394 batting average.

Shortstop: Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins
Ramirez makes the team for the first time. He's batting .345 with 100 hits in 290 at-bats. He also has 13 home runs, 58 RBI, 26 doubles, and 12 steals. His middling .975 fielding percentage and 7 errors can be overlooked this time.

Left in the Dust, Rays Take Two Out of Three from Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays ended the Tampa Bay Rays seven game winning streak but not before dropping two out of three games to a Rays team that has surpassed them in AL Eastern division.

The Rays were the hottest team in the majors in the month of June and a lot of it is due to their starting pitching coming around. In the first two games of the series against the Blue Jays, Tampa Bay received sterling performances from Jeff Niemann and Matt Garza, while getting timely hitting from while the long ball powered the offense.

Tampa Bay saw home runs from BJ Upton, Pat Burrell, Willy Aybar, and two from Carl Crawford in a pair of 4-1 decisions, beating Blue Jays Ace Roy Halladay in game one and young right hander Scott Richmond in the second match up. Neimann became the team leader in victories with his seventh of the season, while Matt Garza got himself back over the .500 mark (6-5).

Problems continued for James Shields, though. In the third game of the series, Shields was touched for three home runs while young lefty Ricky Romero continued Tampa Bay's struggles against left handed pitching, befuddling the Rays hitters, scattering four hits and no runs while striking out seven. Rod Barajas, Alan Lind, and Scott Rolen would make a close 2-0 ball game heading into the seventh into a 5-0 whitewash.

Despite the setback, the Rays put distance between themselves and the Blue Jays while moving past their next opponent, the Texas Rangers, into second place in the American League Wildcard race. They're currently two games behind the New York Yankees (but tied in the win column) but are still five back of the AL East leading Boston Red Sox.

5

8

1

Just two notes today as they are the most important.

I have heard that Ricky Romero had a nice changeup, one that has screwball like action and registers as a slider in MLB.com's gameday. The Rays had baserunners but they always got out quickly with two pickoffs by Romero and two double plays induce, both came in with at least one runner in scoring position late in the game. What made Romero very effective by not giving too many fastballs near the zone for the Rays hitters and pound that screw-changeup low in the strike zone. He still had more flyouts than groundouts, seven strikeouts help especially if they come from the 1-3 hitters.

Burrell's Folly

With runners on second and third and one out, Romero made an obvious intentional unintentional walk to hot hitting Ben Zobrist in favor of loading the bases with Pat Burrell up to the plate. The chance to get a double play from a .230 hitter and get out of a spot.

A first pitch changeup was followed by a high fastball around thigh high. Instead of trying to uppercut it and avoid the double play, Burrell rolls over weakly to the left of second base and get into that deadly 6-4-3 DP. Not sure if Burrell was over thinking in his at-bat but mostly any ball in the outfield would have been a sac fly with Crawford at third base. Instead Burrell jumped the gun on the fastball and maybe was looking to hit a changeup.

It was easy to say Burrell sucked because of the results but The Rays Party is smarter than that and we look into the process of the at-bat. And how do I know Burrell wanted to uppercut his swing but didn't? In his following at-bat in the ninth, Burrell tried to upper cut the first pitch he saw, a very low moving fastball in.

A mental folly from Burrell that is sucking production from the Rays. Need a quick fix.

Wednesday's Games of the Day

July begins with several teams either looking to extend winning streaks or stop losing streaks. San Francisco and St. Louis continue a series that impacts the early Wild Card race. Colorado looks to turn their luck around against the Dodgers. Plenty of pitchers are looking for win number eight, nine, or ten on July 1. Nyjer Morgan joins the Nationals. Adam Jones and Marco Scutaro begin July looking to end recent slumps. Those, and plenty of other good storylines, can be found in Wednesday's Games of the Day.

Washington at Florida: The Nyjer Morgan era begins in Washington. He and his new teammates will face the 7-1 Josh Johnson. Johnson is 4-0 agains the Nats in his career. Nick Johnson has a .556 batting average against Josh Johnson.

Tampa Bay at Toronto: The Rays keep rolling. They defeated Toronto 4-1 on Tuesday running their win streak to 8 games and handing Toronto their fourth straight loss. The series finale features James Shields and Ricky Romero, two very exciting pitchers. Shields is 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA in his last three starts against the Jays. Look for him to turn it around thanks to his team being hot right now. He'll get help from Marco Scutaro who is in the midst of a 1-for-16 slump with his last hit coming on June 26.

Boston at Baltimore: Josh Beckett goes for win number 10 against Brad Bergesen. Bergesen was 3-0 in June. Beckett is 4-1 lifetime at Camden Yards. I'm looking for Adam Jones to rebound from a poor June. Doing it against Josh Beckett might not happen. Teammate Luke Scott has a .545 batting average with 1 homer and 3 RBI against Beckett.

B.J. Upton Scared Scott Richmond Straight

I thing I love about pitch f/x is not only to analyze pitchers, but see how those pitchers pitched to individual batters. Take a great example of Scott Richmond and B.J. Upton. On the first pitch of the game, Richmond thought a good hard moving 91 mph fastball placed up over the plate would be a good pitch to start the game. Not to harmless since it was the first pitch. B.J. Upton showed him swinging on the pitch and taking it into the seats in left-center.

Then in the next three at-bats, Richmond pitched to Upton very differently.
Notice the home run pitch is marked with an x on the red circle in the B.J. adjusted strike zone. The other 12 pitches Richmond threw to Upton were eight breaking pitches and four fastballs. And out of those four fastballs, only one was for a strike and it was in the lower reaches of the strike zone. The other three fastballs were not even close to the strike zone let alone the plate. Richmond pounded Upton with sliders and a couple of curves getting him to groundout, flyout, and one walk the rest of the game.

Funny how one pitch changes the rest of the game plan completely as Richmond didn't want any part of Upton after getting down 1-zip after one pitch.

Doesn't excuse them from lackluster situational hitting leaving 9 on base and going 0-6 with RISP.

The Blue Jays also got a decent amount of base runners but nothing to show for but one run. Matt Garza gave up seven hits and three walks but still got out of jams and pitched deep into his pitch count, throwing 111 pitches.

The fielding came up exceptionally making ranging plays and good throws. The entire infield made a nice play with Gabe Gross gunning down Adam Lind at second base. Also Upton was rangy too, the best centerfilder in baseball.

The solo homer is the norm in Toronto with three today after one on Monday. Upton led the game off hitting a first pitch fastball into left-center. Crawford hit his 8th in the 3rd and Aybar hit his 7th in the 6th inning. Aybar would finish 3-5 with two runs scored.

An extra nugget, it seemed like the Rays struggled with the slider tonight, mainly from Scott Richmond and Brandon League. Zobrist laid off soem to walk twice, single, and get a sac fly in a unnoticed night for him.

Tonight's Lineup: Without Longoria

Yesterday it was Zobrist's day off, now for the second game in the Jays and Rays series, Maddon has benched another infielder. Evan Longoria has been dealing with that hamstring again and Maddon decided to give him the day off with Willy Aybar starting at third and hitting in Longo's three spot. Maddon might give Pena or Bartlett the day off tomorrow with a day off on Thursday and both playing a lot of consecutive games as of late. My bet would be on Pena with a lefty on the mound for the Blue Jays.

Upton cf
Crawford lf
Aybar 3b
Pena 1b
Zobrist 2b
Burrell dh
Gross rf
Bartlett ss
Navarro c

The Yankees are first in the Wild Card with the Rangers a game behind the Rays. A six winning streak that doesn't seem to end with improved pitching and a more consistent offense. A sweep in Toronto would be huge, though winning the road trip is more likely. Still don't rule out anything because the Rays are getting it going on the field which generates presence in the clubhouse.

I picked diamond because of the obvious baseball reference but wanted stray away from the generic around the horn. So here we go:

I knew this would be a low scoring game if Jeff Niemann pitched good, and he did out dueling the former Cy Yong Award winner. Halladay allowed more base runners but caught a bad break allowing a two run homer to Crawford in the 3rd inning. Niemann only struckout one batter but his defense was with him as he went 7.1 innings getting touched with a run after he left. That is beating the Doc's seven strikeouts and getting his second loss of the season.

Two big home runs for three runs, the game winning runs from Crawford's two run shot and an added run by a solo shot by Pat Burrell to lead off the seventh.

Aggressiveness on the base paths for the Rays getting three stolen bases but getting caught twice. Gross was caught once and got out at second after trying to turn a single into a double. He missed the tag but second base umpire didn't see it and called him out.

Only two strikeouts for Rays pitchers means that the defense was working tonight. There was 17 flyouts which were turned easily especially by B.J. Upton, who should win a Gold Glove this season. He makes playing center too easy.
