Hey Guys, A Few Runs Would Be Nice

Here's a quick stat that's hard to believe ...

After today's no decision against the Reds, Arizona's Doug Davis is now 3-8 with a 3.15 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. But that's not the hard to believe part ...

A good friend of mine and a fantasy foe ... we'll call him "Deep Stat" ... pointed out that all three of Davis's wins have come when he's allowed zero earned runs. When he's surrendered just 1 earned run, Davis is 0-1 in three outings. When he's given up 2 earned runs, he's 0-1 with three no decisions. And when Davis has been hit for more than 3 runs, he's lost each time going 0-6.

During each of his starts, he's lasted into at least the 5th inning so he's not getting yanked early. If anything, Davis has been the prototypical "innings eater" with a total of 105.2 IP and an average of 96.1 pitches per start including today's outing. He just isn't getting any run support from the D-Backs' struggling offense. Bottom line is if Davis doesn't throw all zeros, he's not getting the W.

I guess if there's a silver inning to any of this, it's probably a good thing Doug Davis isn't pitching for the Cubs cause there's a Gatorade dispenser in their dugout that's taken some fearful beatings this year from angry Cub hurlers. If Davis was a North Sider, that machine might be in pieces by now.

The Rockies are angry, determined

As Ricky noted earlier today, the Rockies and Jason Hammel suffered a 1-0 loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday that essentially came down to one at-bat. Thus, the Rox left Los Angeles stung, losing the series two games as they attempt to carry their scorching June into July. Colorado is 2-10 against the Dodgers this season. The Rockies are angry at the series outcome, but are still a confident team. That is quite a change from where this team was at the beginning of June. Colorado was a team looking for a way to get back to the promise they showed in 2007. Pitchers started pitching well and hitters started hitting, and Colorado had their June.

They went 21-7 in June. That hot streak gave Colorado a new confidence after Clint Hurdle's May 29 firing. It's a confidence they won't easily let go of. "We showed that we can play with them," said manager Jim Tracy after his team finished 5-4 on the road trip. Jason Hammel also chimed in. "They know we are a different team now, and that it's going to be a dogfight until the end," said Hammel. Those quotes don't sound like they're coming from a team aware of its futility against the team leading their division.

MLB Notebook Looking for Part Time Writers

This is an official announcement for MLB Notebook:

MLB Notebook is looking for Part Time writers. I can't put a number on how many we are hoping to add, because if we get 10 really great writers that apply, I will be tempted to add them all. Here are some details on what being a Part Time writer is all about:

2-3 Posts a week - Could be more if you have the drive to do it, but we only expect 2 each week.

Love of baseball - If you don't love the game, we don't love you.

Writing Experience - We would prefer to add writers who have a proven body of work.

Volunteer - Technically this is a volunteer gig, because we have no real money to pay anyone. However, this could change depending on site revenue. But, even though you aren't being paid, the exposure you get here is beneficial.

This gig is great for someone who writes about a single team for another site (like Ricky does), and wants a place to write about other teams and baseball in general.

If you are interested please contact Zach via email: sportsnotebook@gmail.com

Not so fast, A.J. Hinch

Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic has a story in which Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch says the D-Backs should have three representatives at the All-Star Game. Yes, you read that right. Three of them. Hinch specifically referred to Dan Haren, Mark Reynolds, and Justin Upton.

Yes, the manager of the second worst team in the National League, and third worst team in MLB, thinks his team deserves three All-Stars. To that I say, not so fast A.J. Hinch. I admire his loyalty to his players, but Arizona doesn't really deserve three All-Stars. A bad team shouldn't be rewarded with an abundance of All-Star representatives. In this instance, one or two Diamondbacks will lose out. Reynolds, Upton, and Haren all have compelling statistics. All three still won't make the team.

The Ever Moving Josh Wilson: Move Him To The Bullpen Already!

It seems Josh Wilson can't stay on a team long enough to actually play well. The Mariners have picked Wilson off the waivers from the Padres today. He started the year with the Diamondbacks then was acquired by the Padres. Wilson is primarily a shortstop but can also play second and third. But this season, he has pitched more innings than played games at second base. In fact, he probably would be better served as a pitcher than a position player with career OPS of .586 and a career 12.2% LD% in the Majors compared to a 9.00 ERA and a 86-89 mph fastball in three innings in three career appearances. Not too add that his defense isn't too good with a -16.8 UZR/150 in 641.2 innings at short.

Seriously, Wilson should be converted to a reliever.

Defenseless

The defense of this team just kills me. Absolutely kills me. On Wednesday, it contributed to another Royals loss. I'm bracing myself for more to come.

-- The throw from Jose Guillen to home was horrible, but come on... Miguel Olivo has to at least block that ball. We know he doesn't get down in the dirt for pitches, but apparently that extends to balls thrown from right. Maybe if Guillen makes a better throw, they cut Parra down at home. Maybe not. (In Hillman's post-game comments, he seemed to hang this on Guillen. This baffles me.) However, by not fielding the throw, Olivo sets up the next play...

-- Where he fails to catch a throw from Mark Teahen. What the hell was that? It was a good throw from Teahen, so I'm not sure what was going on. It also looked like Olivo was set up way in front of the plate, so even if he had caught the ball, Young was cruising around him for the run.

-- Alberto Callaspo needs to put that ball in his pocket in the ninth. Big picture, it's not a huge deal, but I happen to like fundamental baseball. (I know... I watch Royals games, so I can't like it too much.)

The moral of this story is: Don't be fooled by modest winning streaks. A team can't consistently win without the ability to catch and throw. As long as the Royals defense stinks, they'll continue to lose more than they will win.

More thoughts:

-- Anyone else lose interest when the bullpen enters a game? It's gotten to the point where I just get up and find something else to do. I mean, half innings are lasting 30 minutes so I can have a beer, read a chapter of a book, play some Rock Band and take a nap.

-- Good to see Bulldog Farnsworth on the mound, just two days after getting chomped. He pitched like the game was on the line.

-- Speaking of the bullpen, I think we have a problem developing where SABR Trey is channelling Dusty Baker in his aversion to the bullpen. There are several reasons for Hillman not to go to his pen. First, the bullpen isn't all that good. Second, Hillman doesn't know how to manage his pen. Third, on the rare occasions he makes the correct move, he's been burned. He doesn't trust himself and he doesn't trust his bullpen. The problem is, when all that happens, you tend to lean on your starters too long.

I know Clark touched on this yesterday, but I'm of the opposite view and not too happy that Meche was left in a 5-0 game and allowed to throw 132 pitches. (He's only the fourth starter this season to top 130 pitches in a start.) Then tonight, Greinke goes for 115 pitches. He started the sixth at 102 pitches - so there's basically no way he can pitch more than one more inning - and the Diamondbacks were jumping on him early. Seemed like a quicker hook was in order.

The Royals have had 10 games this year where their starter has thrown 115 or more pitches. That's tied with Texas for most in the AL and second to the Giants who have 11 games. Seven of those 10 games have come in the last 30 days.

(It doesn't help that this crap defense makes the starters throw extra pitches, like Greinke was forced to do last night.)

I'm not sounding the alarm on this yet, but I suspect we're beginning to see a pattern of abuse developing. This bears watching.

-- Chris Young is hitting .186/.245/.349. That's not quite Tony Pena, Jr territory, but it's damn close. He's making contact (foul or in play) on just 75% of his swings, which is really a poor rate. On the rare occasions where he actually gets the bat on the ball, he's having a helluva time making good contact. Over 53% of the balls he puts in play are fly balls. And since he's stopped hitting for power (6 HR on the year), a ton of those are falling for outs. A sound strategy seems to be to serve up some strikes... If he swings, there's a good chance he'll miss. And if he somehow makes contact, I'm betting on a harmless fly ball.

(Since he's eligible for arbitration after this year, I expect him to be a Royal by December.)

Anyway, there's a clear strategy... Naturally, the Royals refuse to throw him a strike.

Young saw 26 pitches, 14 of them were out of the strike zone. The guy walks three times for the second time in 402 career games and scores every time he's on base. In a blowout, I guess it may not matter so much, but the first run he scored tied the game in the second and the second run he scored gave the D-Backs a 3-1 lead in the fourth, so it's not like his runs were inconsequential.

Only Bulldog Farnsworth threw him strikes.

Hillman's Words Of Genius

"We'll leave Dave alone in left as much as we can, especially since he's continuing to look better at the plate."
-- On possibly moving David DeJesus back to his old position with Coco Crisp on the DL.
