Swing and a Miss: Ariza > Artest According to Plaschke

This is the start of what I hope to be a series on Celtics 17. I will find stupid basketball columns and show them to you.

The first is a column by Bill Plaschke of the LA Times. You know, the guy with the egg-shaped head on "Around the Horn" who thinks the Dodgers are better without Manny Ramirez. This is his opinion on the Lakers' Ron Artest signing.

"Less than three weeks after the parade, the NBA champion Lakers have already met the biggest threat to their throne.

Themselves.

What are they thinking? What are they doing?"

Well, I'm just a blogger so what do I know? But from the looks of it I'd say that the Lakers are trying to improve.

"They just won a title that would not have been possible without the
strong defense and stunning shooting of a 24-year-old kid with a
limitless ceiling."

Plaschke is referring to Trevor Ariza, who was just signed by the Rockets. There are many good things to say about Ariza, but "limitless ceiling" is not one of them.

"Yet they send the kid packing for an aging nut whose greatest hits have occurred on the heads of fans."

Artest is 29, a year and three months younger than Kobe Bryant. As for being a nut, are people really still talking about an incident that occurred five years ago?

Come on. Michael Jordan hit Steve Kerr in practice. Randy Johnson hit a teammate to get out of Seattle. Unless you were hit by Artest, you need to get over it.

"They just won a title with a locker room bathed in the soothing light of unselfishness, teamwork and a quiet temerity."

And that's exactly how you could describe Artest with the Rockets. In fact, Artest might be better than Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming when you take his defense into account.

"Yet they cut the power and added the darkest of moods, a guy who has
made a career out of hoarding the ball, the attention, and the anger."

Hoarding the ball? Artest is usually the guy who wants to assist the top scorer, the guy who wants to guard the other team's best player, and he does both of those very well. The only times he's angry seems to be when he's the main guy on a losing team, which won't be the case with the Lakers.

"Tell me again, why did they get rid of Trevor Ariza for Ron Artest?"

Because Artest is better and comes with a cheaper contract.

"Explain to me, please, why they wouldn't even negotiate further with Trevor Ariza before quickly agreeing to sign Ron Artest?"

They negotiated with Ariza and offered him the same contract as Artest, but Ariza wanted more. Why sign an inferior player for more money?

"Artest is a better player,"

Exactly.

"but that's not the point."

I'm not sure if there is a point in this article. There certainly hasn't been so far.

"Ariza was a better fit, and that's what wins championships."

What about two Finals ago when Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom were inconsistent and Bryant didn't have a secondary player to help him. Isn't that a bit more important than Ariza, who at best is the fifth best player on a championship team?

"Artest is a strong defender, but if the Lakers need someone to quietly
hound a guy during a routine inbounds pass and be willing to make a
small play to win a big game, that's Ariza."

Who's better at hounding a guy on an inbound pass than Artest?

"Artest is a good shooter, but if the Lakers need someone willing to
stand in the shadows for three quarters and emerge to make a big
three-pointer before disappearing again, that's Ariza."

I've never heard of "disappearing" as a good quality of a basketball player, but then again, that might be why I'm not paid to write.

"Artest will supposedly make the Lakers tougher, but what is tougher
than showing up every day and playing hard every play and fighting your
way to a championship?"

So does Ariza disappear or does he "play hard on every play?" First of, kudos on the word choice in that quote. Second of all, Artest might be the hardest working defender in basketball.

"Ariza has a ring, Artest does not, so the Lakers are giving up wins."

Robert Horry has seven championships. Michael Jordan has six. Adam Morrison has a ring. LeBron James has none. Horry > Jordan and Morrison > James.

"Ariza is young 24, Artest is an old 29, so the Lakers are giving up age."

Now you're just repeating the age argument, which is easily proven wrong. Unless of course, Bryant is now past his prime.

"Ariza shot 48% from the three-point line in the playoffs while Artest shot 28%, so the Lakers are giving up clutch."

The Lakers usually go to Bryant or Derek Fisher before relying on Ariza for a clutch shot. Ariza scores his points when Bryant is double-teamed. In fact, Bryant will be double-teamed less frequently with Artest, giving Bryant more opportunities for clutch shots.

"The one thing the Lakers are absolutely gaining here is money, which is
exactly what you will be paying them in increasing increments next
season."

Real professional. Now you're discouraging people from going to Lakers games.

"Artest will sign a three-year deal for about $18 million, roughly the same annual salary that the Houston Rockets gave Ariza.

But Ariza was given two more years by the Rockets, pushing his total closer to $33 million."

You've already admitted that Artest is a better player. Now you're saying that Ariza is more expensive. This isn't really helping your argument.

"Heaven forbid you would want to give a rising young star two more
years, or spend some of your roughly $1 million-per-game playoff bounty
to do it!"

Is there a dictionary nearby? Look up "star." Bryant is a star. Dwight Howard is a star. Gasol is not a star. This would lead most to beleive that Ariza will definitely never be a star.

"Jerry Buss should have opened the pockets a little wider. And Mitch Kupchak should have jogged the memory a little deeper."

The Lakers are currently on the top in payroll. And if any memory needs to be jogged, it's your's, Plaschke. Have you watched a single game with Ariza?

"Remember the last time the Lakers made a postseason acquisition of an
aging star that appeared to give them an embarrassment of riches and
render them unbeatable?

The year was 2004, and they signed two of them, Gary Payton and Karl
Malone, and you know what happened next. By the end of the season, the
fractured chemistry imploded in a Finals loss to the Detroit Pistons
that was so awful, afterward seemingly half the team either quit or was
traded."

Malone and Payton didn't hurt the Lakers. The Lakers missed the Finals in the previous year and got their the next year. Without Malone and Payton, they're eliminated by the Spurs again, and this time in the second round.

"Like Malone and Payton, Artest is a great acquisition in a fantasy
league. But this is reality, and nothing in NBA history has ever been
quite like Artest's reality."

So what makes him worse than Ariza? All I see in here is that Ariza can do some sort of disappearing act that helps the Lakers.

"Everyone knows how, as an Indiana Pacer, he was suspended for 73
regular-season games and the postseason after going into the stands to
confront fans and later punching one on the floor.

A long time ago, huh? Yeah, all of five years."

A real long time ago. Back when the Suns, Pistons, and Heat were great. When the Hornets sucked and the Cavaliers were irrelevant. When Steve Nash was MVP and Emeka Okafor was the next big thing.

"Did you know that he has also once shown up for practice in a bathrobe,
asked to take a month off because he was tired, and been jailed for 10
days for domestic assault?"

What does this have to do with basketball?

"Everyone said he was a changed man when he was traded from the Pacers
to the Sacramento Kings, but he was suspended for a playoff game in
2006 for a flagrant elbow, and the Kings lost that series to the San
Antonio Spurs in six games."

This was the same year that Artest took a team that wasn't expected to make the playoffs to the sixth game as the eight seed. Bryant was also suspended from a playoff game and he's a year older than the aging Artest. What good is he? All he did was lead the Lakers to a championship?

"Everyone said he changed again when he joined the Rockets, but in this
spring's playoff series against the Lakers, he was thrown out of two
games while finishing the series hitting 17 of 61 shots in the last
four games."

He also kept the Rockets in that series with the help of really only Shane Battier.

"And Trevor Ariza has done what, exactly? Agree to come off the bench?
Agree to guard the team's best shooter? Agree to take that shot when
Bryant couldn't?"

Artest won't need to come off the bench, he has always guarded the team's best shooter, and it's not like he'll decline to take shots.

"Ariza's only NBA mistake occurred this week, when he followed the lead
of his misguided agent, David Lee. By joining the Rockets as a miscast
free-agent star, the kid now faces the possibility of a career filled
with disillusionment and mediocrity, not to mention anonymity."

Artest joins the Rockets and they're championship contendors. Ariza joins the Rockets and he's destined for mediocrity. I thought this guy had "limitless potential."

"Ariza was more valuable to the Lakers than to anyone else. This was his
home, his comfort zone, the perfect spot for a supporting actor to
shine from the wings."

So he's a role player, rather than Artest who could play a major role if Bryant is injured or if Gasol isn't reliable.

"Why didn't Ariza realize this? And why couldn't the Lakers have given
him more time to realize this? This agreement occurred within two days
of the start of the free-agent period.

Couldn't the Lakers have given him a chance to come to his senses?

Couldn't they have met somewhere in the middle?"

Yes and they could have spent more on a player destined for mediocrity rather than on a player who will make them better.

"But, no, a flashy guy in a funky haircut beckoned, and the Lakers bit,
trading heart for Hollywood, quiet strength for false bravado, a rock
for a hard place."

As I said earlier, Artest is happiest when he's out of the spotlight, like with the Rockets. And that's exactly what he is with the Lakers. He's not flashy at all. Artest is a scrappy, hard-working player. Are we really using haircuts to judge players?

"While Lakers fans are now faced with an unsettled title defense, there
is a shining word of certainty for every other fan who recently watched
the NBA's next dynasty while shouting "Break up the Lakers."

Done."

I would have suggested a different approach to this article. I would have written more than two lines about why Ariza is better than Artest. But maybe that's just not possible.

So... Anything Going On Today?

No? Good to see we have a quiet holiday weekend going on.

Look, tonight's going to be a circus clusterfark of epic proportions. We know that. Just look around the media - you've got the Los Angeles Times practically needing a change of pants, (and it's not just me who's pointing that out) FOX ready to break into the national games to show his at-bats tomorrow, and most of the mainstream establishment taking the Plaschke line of "well I never!" disgust that most fans won't be burning effigies of Manny. Plus, there's whatever the hell it is that Kurt Streeter is doing.

As I said yesterday, I don't think we're viewing this situation through blue-colored glasses. We know that Manny's a jerk for a variety of reasons, and none of us deny that. I just think the mistake here is viewing the reaction to Manny's return as some sort of referendum on the moral fiber of America, as Mike Schmidt - who's apparently just gotten over the fact that teenagers are "necking" now - hilariously tries to stress.

I love baseball more than just about anything in the universe, but it's important to remember just that - it's baseball. Rooting for a player who broke the rules and paid the price is hardly the same as rooting for anarchy, socialism, and terrorists, no matter how loudly some members of the media like to squawk about it.

Just keep that in mind; no matter how ridiculous this weekend becomes - and have no doubt that it will - it's baseball. On this weekend of all weekends, it's important to keep in mind what's important, and what's entertainment.

Now let's all go off and drink until we can't feel feelings. Happy 4th!

(*Okay, one baseball note: Manny vs. Padres starter Chad Gaudin - a 1.500 OPS with 2 homers in 14 plate appearances.)

Home Run Trot's June All-Star Team: Pitchers

Choosing the pitchers for June's team was just as tough as making some of the decisions for the position players. Some of the players below, like Zack Greinke and Jason Frasor, are making their third straight appearance on the team. Others, like Josh Johnson, are making the team for the first time. Take a look and leave your comments. I think it's a great pitching staff.

*Stats as of 7 PM EST July 2

STARTERS:

SP: Zack Greinke, Kansas City
Yes, Greinke had a tough June going 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA and .290 batting average against. Yet he still leads all starters with a 1.95 ERA. He's also tied for the league lead in wins with 10. Greinke has given up only 25 runs. Thus, he makes the team for the third month in a row.

SP: Tim Lincecum, San Francisco
Lincecum is behind Greinke with 8 wins. But he leads all starters with 132 strikeouts. He has a 2.37 ERA, the third lowest overall, and has given up only 30 earned runs. Lincecum had his best month of the season in June. He went 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA and .202 batting average against. Lincecum is one reason why the Giants are ahead in the NL Wild Card race.

SP: Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants
Cain joins his Giants teammate on this team. Cain has 9 wins this season. He has only 88 strikeouts but has a 2.48 ERA. He also went 3-1 in June with a .192 batting average against.

SP: Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays
Yes, Halladay is currently injured. His overall production this season demonstrates why he gets a place on this team. He's 10-2 with a 1.05 WHIP and 95 strikeouts. His ERA dropped from 2.77 to 2.56 during June. Halladay makes the team for the second straight month.

SP: Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins
Johnson has "only" 7 wins this season. He also has only one loss. He went 3-0 in June with a 2.95 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Overall, he has 97 strikeouts, a 1.13 WHIP, a 2.76 ERA, and a .228 batting average against.

The Rockies are angry, determined

As Ricky noted earlier today, the Rockies and Jason Hammel suffered a 1-0 loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday that essentially came down to one at-bat. Thus, the Rox left Los Angeles stung, losing the series two games as they attempt to carry their scorching June into July. Colorado is 2-10 against the Dodgers this season. The Rockies are angry at the series outcome, but are still a confident team. That is quite a change from where this team was at the beginning of June. Colorado was a team looking for a way to get back to the promise they showed in 2007. Pitchers started pitching well and hitters started hitting, and Colorado had their June.

They went 21-7 in June. That hot streak gave Colorado a new confidence after Clint Hurdle's May 29 firing. It's a confidence they won't easily let go of. "We showed that we can play with them," said manager Jim Tracy after his team finished 5-4 on the road trip. Jason Hammel also chimed in. "They know we are a different team now, and that it's going to be a dogfight until the end," said Hammel. Those quotes don't sound like they're coming from a team aware of its futility against the team leading their division.

A Strange At-Bat Gives Hammel The Loss In The Best Game Of His Career

Looking for something to write that is non-Rays related, I wanted to a quick pitch f/x on someone. Then I found former Ray Jason Hammel pitching arguably his best start of his career, going eight innings of one run ball and only five hits allowed at Los Angeles. And unfortunately for him, Hammel lost the game 1-0 as that run came in the bottom of the eighth as the Rockies offense cooled off against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers pen. Nothing to talk about in the pitch f/x except for a 40 mph pitch he threw. Wait, 40 miles per hour? Grandma speed limit?

It turns out is happened in the most critical at-bat in the game and one of the strangest pitch f/x ABs you will ever see.

First thing is that I didn't witness that following three pitches so I don't have the entire story. Regardless, it all started with a 40 mph pitch and ends with a strange twist.

Anyone Think It's Time to Add A Hall of Fame Bat?

(Yes, I know. Manny's Hall of Fame chances may or may not have been torpedoed with his suspension. Whether or not he actually makes it into the Hall in 2016 or so is beside the point).

Here's the good news: after a 1-0 victory over Colorado today, the Dodgers just took 2 of 3 from the hottest team in baseball, serving notice that no, they don't really need to worry about the Rockies. The pitching staff, so maligned in the offseason, is statistically the best in baseball, leading MLB in batting average against and ERA, largely on the strength of the most strikeouts of any staff in the game.

The bad news? You need every last bit of that pitching when you're scoring just 3 runs in regulation time against the Rockies. If the pitching had been anything less than superior - even if it was just "pretty good", you're very likely looking at a sub .500 June.

Looking around the June stats for the club, a few things pop out immediately:

Andre Ethier is trying to be Adam Dunn. 9 homers and a .619 SLG? Yes please. 0 singles in the last 8 games of the month (plus the first one in July) and 23 strikeouts in 26 games? Not so much. Don't get me wrong, Ethier's power output was more than welcome in a month where everyone else acted like the bats were made of poison, but the fact that so much of it came in bunches (7 homers in 3 games) somewhat mitigated his overall impact.

Juan Pierre deserves the benching he's about to receive. No, I haven't forgotten how great Pierre was immediately after Manny was lost - all of the proper respect to Pierre for those first three weeks. But what so many have ignored is that his hot streak came to a screeching halt as May turned into June, because over the month of June he's been even worse than usual. His .628 June OPS is nearly 100 points lower than his career average, and it's not even like we loved his career average that much.

You want a reason that the Dodger offense sputtered in June? There's plenty of fingers to be pointed, but having Pierre leading off every single game is a pretty good place to start.

Any time you want to pitch in, Volume 1: Orlando Hudson and Casey Blake each sputtered out in June - Hudson in particular, getting on base at just a .269 OBP. However, since each of them were so valuable earlier in the season, I'm willing to write this off as a slump, as compared to...

Any time you want to pitch in, Volume 2: Rafael Furcal and Russell Martin... you're killing me. Martin in particular was somehow worse than he's been all year, struggling to just a .190/.326/.241 mark. Joe Torre seems to have recognized this, giving A.J. Ellis and Brad Ausmus starts before tomorrow's off day in hopes of energizing Martin, but geez. At this rate, the only way the return of Manny's going to do anything for Martin is if Manny swaps out the #99 jersey for #55 each time the catcher's spot comes up in the order.

Matt Kemp, keep it up. His .823 OPS is within range of his .838 season mark, and his season OPS has him as the 4th best hitting center fielder in the bigs. Considering that Carlos Beltran is hurt and may not be the same upon his return, there's a pretty solid case to be made that Kemp is the best center fielder in the National League - not even counting his much-improved defense.

All of which brings me back to Manny. How many other struggling teams can say they're picking up a supreme bat for nothing at the trading deadline, right? Look, is Manny a idiot? No question. Is he a jerk? Probably - I didn't really like reading that he didn't buy the spread for his minor league teammates, which is longstanding tradition for rehabbing stars who make approximately eleventy billion times what the kids do. He's hardly my definition of an upstanding citizen, no matter how childlike and goofy he appears. I'd much rather root for a guy like Kemp or Martin, assuming Martin ever does anything worth cheering for ever again.

All that means, yes, you're damn right that I will look upon Manny with some apprehension when he returns on Friday. But you know what else? I'm going to cheer when he injects the offense with some life and knocks the ball out of the park, because the only reason I care at all about these people is because of what they do for the team I've chosen to follow. What Manny did was disappointing - to say the least - but he's served the punishment laid upon him, and will likely serve much worse in the public eye.

So call me a hypocrite if you must, because I sure as hell booed Barry Bonds and ridiculed Giants fans for standing by him - though as Jon Weisman said, we all hated Barry Bonds long before steroids came to public light. Fact of the matter is, this team's offense has been brutal, and it need something. If that something just so happens to be a retarded man-child who can both crush the ball and push Juan Pierre to the bench, that's fine by me.

Wednesday's Games of the Day

July begins with several teams either looking to extend winning streaks or stop losing streaks. San Francisco and St. Louis continue a series that impacts the early Wild Card race. Colorado looks to turn their luck around against the Dodgers. Plenty of pitchers are looking for win number eight, nine, or ten on July 1. Nyjer Morgan joins the Nationals. Adam Jones and Marco Scutaro begin July looking to end recent slumps. Those, and plenty of other good storylines, can be found in Wednesday's Games of the Day.

Washington at Florida: The Nyjer Morgan era begins in Washington. He and his new teammates will face the 7-1 Josh Johnson. Johnson is 4-0 agains the Nats in his career. Nick Johnson has a .556 batting average against Josh Johnson.

Tampa Bay at Toronto: The Rays keep rolling. They defeated Toronto 4-1 on Tuesday running their win streak to 8 games and handing Toronto their fourth straight loss. The series finale features James Shields and Ricky Romero, two very exciting pitchers. Shields is 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA in his last three starts against the Jays. Look for him to turn it around thanks to his team being hot right now. He'll get help from Marco Scutaro who is in the midst of a 1-for-16 slump with his last hit coming on June 26.

Boston at Baltimore: Josh Beckett goes for win number 10 against Brad Bergesen. Bergesen was 3-0 in June. Beckett is 4-1 lifetime at Camden Yards. I'm looking for Adam Jones to rebound from a poor June. Doing it against Josh Beckett might not happen. Teammate Luke Scott has a .545 batting average with 1 homer and 3 RBI against Beckett.

MLB Stock Market - Nut Hut Edition

Have you ever listened to one of those morning zoo nut-hut talk radio shows? I'm sure you have, and yet you managed to change the dial before slitting your wrists. Often times these extremely boring people will go to excrutiating lengths to have a compelling talk segment. Right about now they're probably talking about how we are now over the hump - the days are getting short again (but they were so long for a while there, ha-ha! Can you beileve how long the days were? Blah blah, I couldn't go to sleep some nights the sky was so bright! Haw!) - and how winter is already on its way.

As much as I detest those jabrones, I can't help but think about the same sort of thing -- the year is flying by. We're coming upon the All Star Break -- aka the most boring week in sports every year -- and before you know it we'll be headed toward October, and long winters, and the hot-stove again. The speed of summer just makes me feel old, and this year in particular there has been little to keep me interested in the baseball season on account of how the Cubs have been a total, unbelievable, typically Cub bust. Man, those guys suck. Still, there are on-going story-lines and we will take a look at those now.

Rising
Mariano Rivera's Save Total
I am getting old. I still remember Rivera as the set-up man on the '96 Yankees. A decade and a half later and he's still there, shutting down opponents, racking up saves. I would guess that the average life expectancy of a closer in baseball is perhaps three seasons, and it's incredible to see Rivera nearing his 1,000th inning pitched in relief, reaching his 500th career save, posting an ERA of 2.31 in an era known for offensive theatrics and booming homeruns. He's done it in years in which he struck out nearly 11 per 9 nnings, and in years in which he's only managed about 6 per 9. Not to mention that in October -- when he is facing the creme of the crop -- his career ERA is 0.77 in 117.1 innings of work. Surely the Yankees will lament the loss of their team's captain, Derek Jeter, when he finally hangs them up. But if we're being fair, I think the loss of Rivera - which will come sooner - will hurt even more. He's been nothing short of amazing his entire career.

The Cardinals' Cances of NL Central Dominance
The NL Central has been a cluster-bomb of crappy teams looking to cough up the division. For a while now it has seemed that the team with the best chance of winning would be whichever one made the first big trade. Then the Cardinals swooped in and stole Mark DeRosa from the Indians for a song. DeRo brings 13 homeruns and a .270 AVG to St. Louis, along with his amazing defensive versatility. I am surely not the only Cub fan to be left cursing in anger over this trade, and it bodes badly for the rest of the NL Central in 2009.

Holding
The health status of Josh Hamilton
When he went down earlier this year, I wondered how the doctors would treat Hamilton. The issue is that he's an addict. No matter how long he stays clean, no matter how successful he is in life, he will always enjoy mood-altering drugs just a little too much. He had a hernia, how do they treat it? Does he get pain killers? Must he go without them? Regardless, Hamilton is progressing and may be back relatively soon. Maybe it's unfair to always see him with that skewed light, I'm sure that more than one Rangers fan bristles at the idea that he might pop one too many Oxy's but I know I would be worried about it if he were on my team. Nevertheless, if the Rangers have any hopes of surprising the league, Hamilton's return will play an instrumental part.

A Baseball Bat, Unswung, On Manny's Shoulder
The return of Manny Ramirez has hit a snag -- he hasn't exactly hit well since he embarked upon his comeback from suspension. That said, he's still due back by the end of the week (just in time for the All Star Game! Wee!) Here's the thing. It's probably safe to say that PED's remain in heavy use in Major League Baseball. It's safe to say that there are players out there right now rolling the dice on staying ahead of the testing curve. Therefore I have to wonder -- when Manny returns, will he stay clean? So if he returns and sets the league on fire -- a very real possibility, despite his present druthers -- does that mean he never needed to cheat, or does it mean that he's just gotten slyer in his cheating ways?

Falling
The Phillies
Philly is a pretty good team, especially offensively. Their problem is that behind Cole Hamels their rotation is shaky at best, and Hamels hasn't been himself of late either. Still, while the Phillies are 3-7 in their last 10, the Mets aren't exactly charging to the front in the NL East. Hopefully the return of Jimmy Rollins will make a difference for the Phillies, but what they need more than that is a pitching staff they can count on -- probably a far reach when the only starter with a Sub-4.00 ERA is 26-year-old lefty J.A. Happ - a guy whose name sounds like an anagram.

The Hapless Chicago Cubs
So much for one of the largest NL payrolls and one of the most well-rounded teams put together this year. The Cubs are a .500 team (at best!). When their pitching is there, their hitting is missing. When their hitters are on fire, their pitching has evaporated. The year is far from lost but not even the biggest haters saw the Cubs playing so badly so late into the season. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as if they are capable of fixing these problems, either.
