Rays Acquire Reliever John Meloan From Indians For Winston Abreu

The Rays have finally made a move to complete the DF'A of Winston Abreu by trading him to the Cleveland Indians for reliever John Meloan. Meloan will be placed on the 40-man roster, in the last open spot. Abreu was designated for assignment to make room for Chad Bradford last Saturday. Abreu was originally signed as relief depth for spring training, he had tore up hitters in Durham and came up when Jason Isringhausen was placed on the DL and eventually getting Tommy John surgery.

As for Meloan, here is a bit from Marc Lancaster:

Meloan was acquired by the Indians on July 26, 2008 from the Dodgers
along with catcher Carlos Santana in exchange for infielder Casey
Blake. In 2007 he was named a Southern League All-Star and Double-A
Reliever of the Year by MinorLeagueBaseball.com. He was selected by the
Dodgers in the fifth round of the 2005 June Draft out of the University
of Arizona.

A former prospect now, Meloan turns 25 on July 11 and will be placed in AAA Durham. This move gives the Rays another reliever on the 40-man with options joining Dale Thayer.

A big pitcher at 6'3'' 230 pounds, John Meloan has pitched well in the minors before joining the Dodgers during the 2007 season. A career K/9 of 10.8 in the minors, Meloan has pitched in 9.1 innings with both the Dodgers and the Indians getting a FIP of 5.90 allowing nine walks and getting nine strikeouts. This season with the AAA affiliate of the Indians, Meloan has pitched 44 innings with 4.52 FIP and a not as promising 7.57 K/9.

In the little time he has pitched in the Majors, Meloan has had all of his appearances tracked in pitch f/x. He features a low-90s fastball that he can cut around 90 mph and has a big breaking low 80s curveball. His arm angle looks to be a three quarters to side arm, possibly whipping his arm. Although Abreu has pitched much better than Meloan at AAA this season, Meloan gives the Rays another reliever with options to call up and/or send down. His teammate Thayer is really his competitor for a call-up in case of an injury to the bullpen.

At least the Rays got someone decent after letting Abreu go.

[Update] Here is a scouting report from the Indians Prospect Insider.

I have always held StatSpeak in high regard, so this is really an honor to be here. Now that it's out of the way, let's get to the good stuff...

This offseason, Andy Marte was designated for assignment by the Cleveland Indians. He cleared waivers, and returned to their minor league system for yet another year.

Marte was originally signed as an undrafted free agent from the Dominican Republic by the Braves in 2000. Marte was shipped to the Red Sox in 2005 for Edgar Renteria. Less then two months later, he was traded, along with others, to the Indians for Coco Crisp, Josh Bard, and David Riske.

Marte has since bounced around between Cleveland and Triple-A. His numbers have not been outstanding in Triple-A, as he has sported .261/.322/.451 and .267/.309/.457 lines in 2006 and 2007. He was promoted to Cleveland for a full season in 2008. He proceeded to hit .221/.268/.315 with only 3 homers in 257 plate appearances.

This year, he has been much more productive in Triple-A. He is hitting .306/.340/.495 with 9 dingers so far this season. More importantly, he seems to be a new hitter. His line drive percentage of 23.8% this year is the highest in his career, and 4% higher then his minor league average. Could he actually be a changed hitter? If he is, he could be a great bargain buy for a team looking for some pop off the bench.

I bet a lot of teams are wishing they took a chance of Marte this offseason when he was available for next to nothing. According to Minor League Splits, he would be hitting .276/.303/.431 with 7 homers if he would have been in the majors all of this year (they use MLE's). That wouldn't be too bad for someone off the bench, would it?

Marte isn't even 26 years old yet, so he still has some years in front of him. Call me crazy, but I still believe he can be a solid starter in the Major Leagues. That is, if he has changed his hitting ways for good. We shall see.

Plenty of good links can be found in the Links tonight. I think for the first time, I've found conflicting reports on a pitcher. That pitcher would be Gio Gonzalez.
All 30 teams are on the field Tuesday with three new series' beginning. Derek Lowe attempts to match his April 5 performance against the Phillies. John Smoltz looks for his first win as member of the Red Sox. Cliff Lee attempts to keep the Indians from skidding any further. Randy Johnson and Chris Carpenter face off in the pitching matchup of the day. Andre Ethier and Garrett Atkins look to solve their respective pitching riddles.

Philadelphia at Atlanta: The Phillies take their two-game winning streak to Atlanta to face Derek Lowe and the Braves. Lowe is 7-6, but he opened the season on April 5 by pitching 8 shutout innings against the defending World Champions. That's been his only start against the Phils so far. Joe Blanton pitches for the Phillies. Ryan Howard is a lowly 2-for-22 against Lowe.

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore: It's take two for John Smoltz. This time he faces Rich Hill and the lowly Orioles.

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland: The Indians attempt to halt their losing streak at three with Cliff Lee on the mound. Lee is 1-0 against the White Sox this season, going 7 shutout innings on May 13. Paul Konerko is 16-for-45 with 5 home runs against Lee. He'll have to pick up the slack for teammates Jermaine Dye and Jim Thome who don't do well against Lee.

Indians Notes: Pavano, Perez, DeRosa, Peralta, Sizemore

For a team currently sitting 12 games out, in last place, in the AL Central, the Indians certainly provide plenty of topics to talk about. They make it easy to move past the usual "this team is bad" type of post and get into other baseball issues.

First on the list, Carl Pavano. Pavano is 1-2 in 4 June starts with a robust 7.25 ERA. He also sports a .351 batting average against. After going 5-1 in May, Pavano is quickly returning back to Earth and reminding us of the Carl Pavano Yankees fans love to hate. Pavano went 0-3 in April, giving himself a 1-5 record outside of his May brilliance. Yes, I just used Carl Pavano and the word "brilliance" in the same sentence.

In his last three starts, Pavano hasn't made it past the fifth inning. He's also surrendered 23 runs while striking out only 6. Adding to his enigmatic nature this season, Pavano is 2-0 against the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland's Monday opponent. He pitched his only complete game (shutout) of the year against them as well. He's given up only 4 runs to them and has a 2.35 ERA. It's tough to say which Carl Pavano will appear Monday. Ok, not really. Pavano is back to his old self after channeling Walter Johnson or Christy Mathewson for a month. If a pitcher surrounds two good months with a bad one, then he can still be considered a good pitcher. If a pitcher does what Pavano is doing and sandwiches a good month between two bad ones after a few injury-riddled seasons, then he's not a good pitcher.

Fantasy Baseball Impact: St. Louis Cardinals Acquire Mark DeRosa

On Saturday, the St. Louis Cardinals acquired IF/OF Mark DeRosa from the Cleveland Indians for pitcher Chris Perez and a player to be named later.

DeRosa made his Cardinal debut on Sunday, and he went 0-for-3 with a walk as he batted cleanup behind 1B Albert Pujols and played left field. For the season through Sunday, DeRosa is hitting .267 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI in 281 at-bats.

DeRosa has played all over the diamond this season, playing games at 3B and 1B as well as in the outfield. Cardinals' manager Tony LaRussa will certainly put that versatility to use, as he also played 2B and SS during his big league career.

DeRosa could certainly benefit if he continues to hit behind Pujols. St. Louis has not gotten much production out of the #4 spot in the batting order this season, so he should get ample opportunity to occupy that spot and reap the potential rewards. If you're in an NL-only league, grab DeRosa right now if no one else has.

If DeRosa continues to see time in LF, that would likely reduce OF Chris Duncan's playing time, since Duncan has played 58 games there so far this season. Duncan is hitting .253 with five home runs and 31 RBI in 229 at-bats this season but he has also proven to be somewhat of a defensive liability, which could effect his playing time. Ryan Ludwick, Rick Ankiel and Colby Rasmus could also see their playing time effected if DeRosa is a big part of the outfield mix.

DeRosa seems likely to see a lot of action at 3B, which would then effect the playing time of IF Joe Thurston, who has played 47 games there this season. SS Khalil Greene has also played eight games at 3B recently, but reports suggest that he could be headed back to the DL with the same anxiety disorder that plagued him earlier in the season. IF Tyler Greene has also seen action at 3B this season, playing nine games there. One thing does seem certain: DeRosa is a better offensive player than anyone the Cardinals have used at the hot corner so far this season.

If you own DeRosa in a mixed league, you can probably continue to start him if you have been doing so even though the Cardinals' lineup seems to be less potent overall than the Indians' lineup he left. Playing time is not likely to be an issue for DeRosa, since he can play so many different positions.

DeRosa Will Help Cards

In
one of the first high-profile trades of the summer, the Cleveland
Indians on Saturday dealt the versatile Mark DeRosa to the St. Louis
Cardinals in exchange for reliever Chris Perez and a player to be named
later.

The verdict on the outcomes of this deal won't be out for
a long time, of course, but the thought processes guiding the thinking
on both sides appear to have been sound.

DeRosa, with the
ability to play multiple positions on the diamond, is a nice fit for
the Cardinals. Due mostly to injuries, third base has been a revolving
door for St. Louis in 2009; Troy Glaus has yet to appear in a game,
David Freese and Joe Thurston are recovering from surgeries and Khalil
Greene has struggled on the field and with anxiety disorder. As such,
the 33-year-old veteran adds a nice option at the position on an
interim basis while Glaus works his way back for a second-half push.
When the aforementioned third basemen return to the picture, though, he
can also help out in other areas, affording manager Tony LaRussa the luxury of putting him at second base or on a corner outfield spot; he
started in left field and batted clean up in his Cardinals debut on
Sunday.

DeRosa, traded to the Indians over the offseason, had a
career year at 32 with the Chicago Cubs in 2008, hitting .285/.376/.481
with 21 home runs and 87 RBIs in his second stint in the Windy City. He
put up personal bests in OPS+ (118) and Weighted On-Base Average
(woBA, .376), amassing an impressive 3.8 Wins Above Replacement (WAR);
according to FanGraphs,
that level of production translates to $17.2-M on the open market.
Although his line was boosted by the friendly confines of Wrigley Field
(he hit 316/.404/.514. at home and .254/.347/.448 on the road), it was
an incredible performance for the former two-sport star at the
University of Pennsylvania.

Despite the breakout, Chicago
surprised the baseball world and angered many in its fan base by
sending DeRosa to Cleveland in exchange for a package of pitching
prospects before spring training. Like several of his new teammates, he
struggled out of the gate after finally finding a spot to call home,
third base. He rebounded a bit in recent weeks as his trade value
increased, though, posting an overall line of .270./.342/.457 with 13
home runs and 50 RBIs with the Indians, who have essentially raised the
red flag. Although his rates worsened (9.4 BB%, 22.7 K%) from his
Chicago days, he put up a decent 105 OPS+ and .349 wOBA in 314 plate
appearances in his return to the Junior Circuit.

Another selling
point, DeRosa should help the Cardinals' issues against left-handed
pitching. Even with Albert Pujols lighting up southpaws at an
otherworldly level, the club has combined to hit just .228/.309/.358
with a .668 OPS in 703 at-bats against lefties

DeRosa, on the
other hand, has been extremely productive against his opposite kind
during his career, batting .305/.375/.488 against them in 826 at-bats.
His .863 OPS against left-handers is more than 100 points higher than
his mark against right-handers (.737), and, while the sample size is
small, he has raked to the tune of a .339/.409/.661 line and 1.070 OPS
against them in 59 at-bats in '09.

DeRosa does have certain
flaws, however. While he can play several places, he isn't a great
defender, especially in the infield. He produced a -5.5 UZR and -16.3
UZR/150 in 44 games at the hot corner with the Tribe, and, over 208
games there total during his career, has been worth -12.4 runs below
average. The reports at his natural position, second base (-12.0 career
UZR), aren't much better, though he has been well above average on the
outfield corners (18.2 outfield UZR).

As a sum of his defensive
parts, DeRosa is still quite valuable. When accounting for batting,
fielding, positional and replacement factors, he has been worth 1.1
WAR. ZiPS projects him to hit at a .280/.358/.432 clip with a .348 wOBA
the rest of the way, so he's likely to add just under two wins for the
Cards. Referred to by some as the glue holding the '08 Cubs together,
he's also considered to be an excellent clubhouse presence and leader
by all accounts; while these intangible traits tend to get overrated,
they certainly don't hurt matters.

Despite hitting fourth on
Sunday, DeRosa will likely provide an on-base boost in front of Pujols
and can be used in numerous spots in the lineup. One of his biggest
strengths is that he provides LaRussa with options on both sides of the
ball. The 12-year veteran, in the last year of a three-year, $13-M
contract he was given by the Cubs in the winter of 2006, will become a
free agent at season's end but still has value even if he ends up as
only a rental. St. Louis finds itself 41-36 and tied with the Milwaukee
Brewers for first place in the National League Central, despite
offensive woes that should only improve in the second half. Thus,
DeRosa could end up making an important difference in the Central race.
Plus, his arrival may end any talks between the Cardinals and the
Oakland Athletics about a potential Matt Holliday deal-- the A's are
reportedly asking for a bundle of elite prospects in return--but still
sends a positive message to a fan base that has been critical of the
current front office regime.

The cost of acquiring DeRosa didn't come cheap, however, as St. Louis was forced to part ways with a pitcher
whom many considered to be its future closer in order to upgrade its
offensive attack. Cleveland general manager Mark Shapiro told reporters
that the timing was right to sell the infielder/outfielder as far as
his club was concerned, and he appears to have successfully received
maximum value in exchange for an expendable asset. After getting off to
a miserable start, the Indians are 31-46 and in the cellar of the
American League Central. Favorites in the division headed into the
spring, the Tribe have been expected to punt, becoming active
sellers in the trade market, for some time now. While big names Cliff
Lee and Victor Martinez are unlikely to be moved considering their
affordable options for 2010, DeRosa seemed like the most logical
regular to get shipped; there was a demand for his services and he was
expendable given his impending free agent status.

Shapiro, after
testing the market, has to be happy with his return. Perez, one of many
hard-throwing relief products of the St. Louis farm system, has the
chance to be a special late-inning arm under club control at an
affordable rate well into the next decade. The soon-to-be 25-year-old
(July 1 birthday) has excellent stuff and has displayed the ability to
miss bats since being drafted out of the University of Miami with the
42nd pick in the 2006 draft. He relies on an effective two-pitch
arsenal that features a mid-90s heater (avg. fastball velocity 94.0
MPH) and mid-90s slider (84.9 MPH).

After beginning the season
at Triple-A, Perez has had mixed results in '09, registering a 4.18
ERA, 101 ERA+ and 4.45 Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) mark in 23.2
innings pitched over 29 relief appearances. He has struck out 30,
posting an excellent 11.41 K/9%. His 5.70 BB/9 rate is alarming,
however, as command and consistency have continued to be an issue for
the young righty; he also struggled on this front in his debut in '08,
posting a 4.75 BB/9 rate while frustrating LaRussa by blowing a few
saves in September.

With Jason Motte and co. under team control
for some time, the Cards have other young relief options. Perez had
perhaps the highest upside of the group, though, because of his
excellent second pitch, his nasty slider. If he can harness his control
and locate his pitches where he wants to in the strike zone, he could
emerge as an elite reliever called upon to record outs in high-leverage
situations, perhaps in a closer role, in Cleveland.

With that
said, relievers are the most fungible role on a major league roster and
have limited upside for that reason. While Perez could be a stud,
relief pitching is the most economical position to upgrade via the
draft, trades and the open market, and, with the small sample sizes,
even the best bullpen arms have a hard time passing the 1.0-WAR mark.

Trying
to label an instant winner for this deal is a futile exercise, as doing
so will be impossible until seeing what Perez accomplishes down the
road. For now, though, both sides appear to have received good value
when considering the circumstances. It's doubtful that Cleveland
would've been able to land a better package for DeRosa, who looks to be
a great match for St. Louis.

To reach Tyler Hissey, send an email to TylerHissey@gmail.com.

Before we get to the Links, I would also like to welcome Bob to the site. It could be worse than having two writers who are Phillies fans.

Unfortunately, we only have a small set of links going into Monday.

With the Mark DeRosa trade comes analysis of the fantasy impact of said trade. Here's one such analysis I think is right on.

Closer Links:

Closer Pecking Order.

Hitter Links:

Andre Ethier hits 3 home runs off 3 different pitchers on 3 different pitches.
Hurts So Good (Again) For Cardinals

I never did understand why the Cubs parted ways with their valuable spark plug Mark DeRosa in the off season. As other players can fill the void, but You win With Mark DeRosa . At first look, it seemed the Cubs were dumping DeRosa's 5.5 million salary. However, the Cubs GM Hendry has admitted in recent interviews that he was attempting to reduce the number of right handed bats in the cubs lineup : Soriano - R, D. Lee - R, Theriot - R, Soto - R, A. Ramirez - R

I guess the lack of a left handed bat it what sent DeRosa packing. The number of times Ramirez has gotten hurt over the past few years in reason enough to keep DeRosa around as the ball club was not helped in any way with the players the recieved from the Indians for DeRosa.

As a club, the Cardinals always bring in that solid veteran that helps them go over the top and win the division title. This deal giving up a former #1 pick Chris Perez out of the University of Miami who throws in the high 90s is a decent player the Tribe recieved. But in this case, Ryan Franklin is the defacto closer and with another hard thrower in Jason Motte, this was a deal the Cardinals could afford to make.

Mark DeRosa is signed only for the season. However, they have had the void at third base for much of the season, and this will certainly solidify their infield. DeRosa can fill in all across the field, and his 50 RBIs and 13 HRs will fill in nicely.

The Indians did pretty well as far as value, but not as fit. With Kerry Wood signed in the off season as the closer, Perez will have to wait his turn and that could be a while. For now, he is just another arm for the bullpen. This signals that the Indians are throwing in the towl and building for 2010 and beyond.

Sunday's Games of the Day

Sunday brings finality to Interleague Play in 2009. The Red Sox, Pirates, Orioles, Rays, Astros, and Yankees are all looking for sweeps. Chien-Ming Wang looks for a way to prevent himself from going 0-7.

Cincinnati at Cleveland: The Indians need a win Sunday to tie the 2009 installment of the Battle of Ohio and keep the Reds from taking the Ohio Cup back to Great American Ballpark. Both teams have won a game this weekend. Joey Votto had two homers in two at-bats off David Huff in their last meeting.

Philadelphia at Toronto: The Phillies managed to win in decisive fashion on Saturday. They're now 2-8 in their last 10 games. Interleague Play has not been particularly kind to them this season; they're 5-12. Jamie Moyer faces Brian Tallet on Sunday. Marco Scutaro has a .438 batting average and three home runs off Jamie Moyer.

Boston at Atlanta: The Sox and Brad Penny look to sweep the Braves and send them to their fifth straight loss. Tommy Hanson will try to prevent that and move to 4-0 on the season. Penny is 8-4 with a 5.13 ERA against the Braves. A win doesn't have to be pretty.
