Home Run Trot's June All-Star Team: Pitchers

Choosing the pitchers for June's team was just as tough as making some of the decisions for the position players. Some of the players below, like Zack Greinke and Jason Frasor, are making their third straight appearance on the team. Others, like Josh Johnson, are making the team for the first time. Take a look and leave your comments. I think it's a great pitching staff.

*Stats as of 7 PM EST July 2

STARTERS:

SP: Zack Greinke, Kansas City
Yes, Greinke had a tough June going 2-2 with a 4.05 ERA and .290 batting average against. Yet he still leads all starters with a 1.95 ERA. He's also tied for the league lead in wins with 10. Greinke has given up only 25 runs. Thus, he makes the team for the third month in a row.

SP: Tim Lincecum, San Francisco
Lincecum is behind Greinke with 8 wins. But he leads all starters with 132 strikeouts. He has a 2.37 ERA, the third lowest overall, and has given up only 30 earned runs. Lincecum had his best month of the season in June. He went 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA and .202 batting average against. Lincecum is one reason why the Giants are ahead in the NL Wild Card race.

SP: Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants
Cain joins his Giants teammate on this team. Cain has 9 wins this season. He has only 88 strikeouts but has a 2.48 ERA. He also went 3-1 in June with a .192 batting average against.

SP: Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays
Yes, Halladay is currently injured. His overall production this season demonstrates why he gets a place on this team. He's 10-2 with a 1.05 WHIP and 95 strikeouts. His ERA dropped from 2.77 to 2.56 during June. Halladay makes the team for the second straight month.

SP: Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins
Johnson has "only" 7 wins this season. He also has only one loss. He went 3-0 in June with a 2.95 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Overall, he has 97 strikeouts, a 1.13 WHIP, a 2.76 ERA, and a .228 batting average against.

Home Run Trot's June All-Star Team: Position Players

The monthly All-Star team is another feature I'm bringing over from my old blog. For those unfamiliar with my previous work, here are the April and May posts. I'm bringing the All-Star team over to MLB Notebook with a twist. It's going to be divided into two posts. One for the position players and a second for the pitching staff. Now that I'm working with some other great writers, these monthly posts can properly be used to start a discussion.

*All stats are compiled as of 7 PM EST on July 1.

Catcher: Bengie Molina, San Francisco Giants
Making this selection was not tough, unlike April and May. Molina is making his second appearance on this team. He leads all catchers with 10 home runs and 45 RBI. He also has 14 doubles and a triple. His numbers stayed pretty even with his April and May numbers. He's also sporting a .996 fielding percentage with only 2 errors.

First Base: Albert Pujols, St. Louis Cardinals
Pujols makes his third straight appearance on this team. Pujols leads MLB in home runs (30) and RBI (77). He's also scored 61 runs and has a .332 batting average. This pick was a no-brainer.

Second Base: Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies
Second base has proven to be perhaps the toughest pick to make. Utley makes the team for a second time because he picked up the pace in June with 6 home runs, 19 RBI and a .320 average. He's tied for second among second basemen with 51 RBI. He leads all second basemen with a .999 OPS.

Third Base: Pablo Sandoval, San Francisco Giants
Sandoval takes the spot from Evan Longoria on the strength of his June. In 94 June at-bats, Sandoval had 8 home runs, 20 RBI, 9 doubles, and a .394 batting average.

Shortstop: Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins
Ramirez makes the team for the first time. He's batting .345 with 100 hits in 290 at-bats. He also has 13 home runs, 58 RBI, 26 doubles, and 12 steals. His middling .975 fielding percentage and 7 errors can be overlooked this time.

Fantasy Links of the Day

Plenty of good links can be found in the Links tonight. I think for the first time, I've found conflicting reports on a pitcher. That pitcher would be Gio Gonzalez. For those of you whose teams are injury-riddled, Stephania Bell's Injury Blog discusses the big injuries of the week and KFFL talks about injuries by position.

Closer Links:

Relief Efforts discusses Chris Perez's chances to be Cleveland's closer. Eric Karabell has some bad news for those of you who rushed to your league's waiver wire to get Perez after the Indians traded for him. Some very good prospect links can be found after the jump. Of course, the usual next day links can be found at the end of the post to help you prepare for Thursday.

Hitter Links:

T.I.P.S. says don't give up on Hanley Ramirez and that it's time to send Adrian Gonzalez packing.

Injury Links:

KFFL's Injury News.

Stephania Bell's Injury Blog holds some bad news for Carlos Beltran owners as well as other injury news.

Wednesday's Games of the Day

July begins with several teams either looking to extend winning streaks or stop losing streaks. San Francisco and St. Louis continue a series that impacts the early Wild Card race. Colorado looks to turn their luck around against the Dodgers. Plenty of pitchers are looking for win number eight, nine, or ten on July 1. Nyjer Morgan joins the Nationals. Adam Jones and Marco Scutaro begin July looking to end recent slumps. Those, and plenty of other good storylines, can be found in Wednesday's Games of the Day.

Washington at Florida: The Nyjer Morgan era begins in Washington. He and his new teammates will face the 7-1 Josh Johnson. Johnson is 4-0 agains the Nats in his career. Nick Johnson has a .556 batting average against Josh Johnson.

Tampa Bay at Toronto: The Rays keep rolling. They defeated Toronto 4-1 on Tuesday running their win streak to 8 games and handing Toronto their fourth straight loss. The series finale features James Shields and Ricky Romero, two very exciting pitchers. Shields is 0-2 with a 4.09 ERA in his last three starts against the Jays. Look for him to turn it around thanks to his team being hot right now. He'll get help from Marco Scutaro who is in the midst of a 1-for-16 slump with his last hit coming on June 26.

Boston at Baltimore: Josh Beckett goes for win number 10 against Brad Bergesen. Bergesen was 3-0 in June. Beckett is 4-1 lifetime at Camden Yards. I'm looking for Adam Jones to rebound from a poor June. Doing it against Josh Beckett might not happen. Teammate Luke Scott has a .545 batting average with 1 homer and 3 RBI against Beckett.

Randy Johnson and Chris Carpenter face off in the pitching matchup of the day. Andre Ethier and Garrett Atkins look to solve their respective pitching riddles.

Philadelphia at Atlanta: The Phillies take their two-game winning streak to Atlanta to face Derek Lowe and the Braves. Lowe is 7-6, but he opened the season on April 5 by pitching 8 shutout innings against the defending World Champions. That's been his only start against the Phils so far. Joe Blanton pitches for the Phillies. Ryan Howard is a lowly 2-for-22 against Lowe.

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore: It's take two for John Smoltz. This time he faces Rich Hill and the lowly Orioles.

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland: The Indians attempt to halt their losing streak at three with Cliff Lee on the mound. Lee is 1-0 against the White Sox this season, going 7 shutout innings on May 13. Paul Konerko is 16-for-45 with 5 home runs against Lee. He'll have to pick up the slack for teammates Jermaine Dye and Jim Thome who don't do well against Lee.

Rays Sweep Marlins, Move into 3rd Place in AL East

The Tampa Bay Rays completed a three game sweep of their cross state rivals, the Florida Marlins. In doing so, Tampa Bay kept pace with the New York Yankees in the wildcard chase while moving past the Toronto Blue Jays and sole possesion of third place in the American League Eastern Division. Depending on the outcome of tonights Mets-Yankees game, the Rays could be within 1 game of the Yankees for second in the division.

BJ Upton apparently wishes he played in the National League. Against interleague competition, the Tampa Bay centerfielder is batting .357 with two homers and 13 RBIs in 16 interleague games. This compared to .207 against AL competition.

It was Upton who powered the Rays past the Marlins in game one. He broke up a 2-2 tie in the 5th inning by scoring on a wild pitch. Then in the eighth he put the game away with a three run double. Unfortunately, teammate Jason Bartlett went 0-for-4, seeing his 19 game hit streak be broken. Tampa Bay got a solid pitching performance from James Shields, who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 9 hits and 3 earned runs. The Rays won game one 7-3.

In game two, Scott Kazmir made his triumphant return to the Rays and looked like the old dominating Kaz that Rays fans remember. The former All-Star went five strong innings, allowing four hits, two runs, striking out five and only walking one batter - a major achievement for a hurler who has struggled with control all season. Kazmir was gone by the time the Rays snapped a 2-2 tie. That would be the bottom of the ninth when Jason Barlett singled, stole second, advanced to third, then was driven home by Willy Aybar's sacrifice fly to center. Carlos Pena hit his 23rd home run of the season.

In the final game of the homestand, the Rays completed the sweep with a little pitching from phenom David Price and a little power from their center fielder, BJ Upton. Upton's blast in the 3rd inning secured their place as only the 5th team in Major League Baseball history to have 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases before the All-Star break. In addition, Tropicana Field remained the only field in the majors to have a home run hit in every game. Price had his best outing after two bad ones, going six and third innings, allowing only one run and striking out four. Price is still struggling with control, walking five and while allowing only two hits. The Rays found themselves executing on several scoring opportunities throughout the contest - getting run scoring hits from Jason Bartlett, Gabe Kapler, Evan Longoria and Ben Zobrist.

Tampa Bay finished up its homestand 5-1, winners of five straight. They'll finally get their shot at AL Eastern division rival Toronto, beginning a six game road trip in the great white north. tomorrow, then coming home to face the Blue Jays at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay is 5 behind Boston in the AL East, 2 games behind the Yankees for the Wild Card

Sunday's Games of the Day

Sunday brings finality to Interleague Play in 2009. The Red Sox, Pirates, Orioles, Rays, Astros, and Yankees are all looking for sweeps. Chien-Ming Wang looks for a way to prevent himself from going 0-7.

Cincinnati at Cleveland: The Indians need a win Sunday to tie the 2009 installment of the Battle of Ohio and keep the Reds from taking the Ohio Cup back to Great American Ballpark. Both teams have won a game this weekend. Joey Votto had two homers in two at-bats off David Huff in their last meeting.

Philadelphia at Toronto: The Phillies managed to win in decisive fashion on Saturday. They're now 2-8 in their last 10 games. Interleague Play has not been particularly kind to them this season; they're 5-12. Jamie Moyer faces Brian Tallet on Sunday. Marco Scutaro has a .438 batting average and three home runs off Jamie Moyer.

Boston at Atlanta: The Sox and Brad Penny look to sweep the Braves and send them to their fifth straight loss. Tommy Hanson will try to prevent that and move to 4-0 on the season. Penny is 8-4 with a 5.13 ERA against the Braves. A win doesn't have to be pretty.

This is an official announcement for MLB Notebook:

MLB Notebook is looking for Part Time writers. I can't put a number on how many we are hoping to add, because if we get 10 really great writers that apply, I will be tempted to add them all. Here are some details on what being a Part Time writer is all about:

2-3 Posts a week - Could be more if you have the drive to do it, but we only expect 2 each week.

Love of baseball - If you don't love the game, we don't love you.

Writing Experience - We would prefer to add writers who have a proven body of work.

Volunteer - Technically this is a volunteer gig, because we have no real money to pay anyone. However, this could change depending on site revenue. But, even though you aren't being paid, the exposure you get here is beneficial.

This gig is great for someone who writes about a single team for another site (like Ricky does), and wants a place to write about other teams and baseball in general.

If you are interested please contact Zach via email: sportsnotebook@gmail.com

Fantasy Files: Jorge Cantu

Jorge Cantu started the 2009 season off with a bang, making him a very productive and popular fantasy baseball player. In April, he had 26 hits and a .365 average. He hit 7 home runs and drove in 22 runs while scoring 15 runs of his own and hitting 5 doubles. He did all that even though he missed five of the Marlins games. On the CBS point system, Cantu scored 101 fantasy points in April. Then May happened.

In May, Cantu took a nosedive. His popularity stayed intact, but his numbers fell. He hit only .211. If that wasn't bad enough, he lost his power as well. Cantu hit only 1 home run despite driving in 15 runs. He also tallied almost as many strikeouts (20) as hits (24). He slugged .778 in April but only .281 in May. As June comes to a close, Cantu's rebounded and should be finding his way back into your fantasy baseball lineup.

Fantasy Baseball: Florida Marlins Closer Situation

On Wednesday, the Florida Marlins placed closer Matt Lindstrom on the 15-day DL due to a sprained right elbow. He reportedly has been given an order to not throw for four weeks, meaning he may not return until August. Lindstrom had also missed time during Spring Training with a strained rotator cuff.

Lindstrom has 14 saves in 16 opportunities along with a 2-1 record and 6.52 ERA in 32 appearances so far this season. He has struck out 26 batters in his 29 innings (8.1 K/9), but has struggled with his control (6.2 BB/9).

The Marlins seem likely to use a few different pitchers to close games in Lindstrom's place. Here are the most likely candidates, with season statistics through Wednesday.

1. RHP Leo Nunez (2-3, 4.13 ERA, 2 saves)
2. LHP Dan Meyer (1-0, 2.03 ERA, 1 save, 35 appearances)
3. RHP Brian Sanches (1-1, 0.59 ERA)
4. RHP Kiko Calero (1-0, 2.01 ERA, 36 appearances)
5. LHP Renyel Pinto (2-0, 2.13 ERA, 28 appearances)

Nunez would appear to be the frontrunner for save opportunities, as soon as he returns from an ankle injury he suffered last Saturday night. He was expected to be available to pitch on Wednesday night, but he did not enter the game when the team had a save situation.

Meyer has been effective as a set-up man, so Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez may be hesitant to move him from that role even though he got the first save in Lindstrom's stead on Wednesday night.

Sanches has only made 14 appearances this season for the Marlins, but does have four saves in Triple-A this season and had at least 13 saves in Triple-A each season from 2006-2008.

Calero is currently on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, but could also enter the mix for save opportunities once he returns, which is expected to be sometime in early July.

Punto was on the DL due to an elbow injury and was activated last week.

From a fantasy perspective, this could easily become a closer-by-committee while Lindstrom is out. That situation would render all involved virtually useless to fantasy owners unless one guy emerges and gets most of the save chances.

If you have Lindstrom on your fantasy team and want to pursue options from outside the Marlins' organization, these guys may be worth adding if they are available in your league. All stats are through Wednesday.

1. J.P. Howell, Tampa Bay Rays (2-2, 1.82 ERA, 4 saves)
2. Jason Frasor, Toronto Blue Jays (5-1, 2.10 ERA, 2 saves)
3. Andrew Bailey, Oakland A's (4-1, 2.23 ERA, 8 saves)
4. Rafael Soriano, Atlanta Braves (1-1, 1.34 ERA, 6 saves)
5. Mike Gonzalez, Atlanta Braves (2-0, 2.12 ERA, 8 saves).
6. Brad Ziegler, Oakland A's (1-3, 3.62 ERA, 6 saves)
7. Mike MacDougal, Washington Nationals (0-0, 3.94 ERA, 2 saves)
8. Ramon Troncoso, Los Angeles Dodgers (1-0, 2.20 ERA, 4 saves)
