Big Weekend Series

I know it's been something like a month since I've written here, and even more since I've written anything worth while (if ever), but I've been relatively busy. That is, relative to a person who does nothing. The summer's made me lazy, but I'm over it and I'll be around more. Anyway, shifting the blame off myself, you have to admit, the Reds haven't been the most interesting ball club lately. Of course Votto's back, and as of yesterday afternoon we're 2 games out of first with a big opportunity to pull ahead this weekend against the Cardinals, but other than that, there hasn't been much to get worked up about, good or bad.

It looks like Homer could be back for a prolonged stay, but I don't really care too much about that. His command has been off in his limited appearances, but even if he does get it together, I think the Reds are going to need lots of offense (a tall order) to pull off a victory anytime he's on the mound. There's also the Dickerson v. Taveras debate. Dickerson obviously has the numbers advantage so far, not to mention his amazing defense in centerfield (Baseball Tonight couldn't get enough of Dickerson when he got those few starts awhile ago), but it doesn't look like Baker or the front office are going to change their minds for the long term. Sure, Dickerson will get his playing time, either in center or left, but money is money and orders are orders, so just let Taveras play and work himself out of his slump, which he is slowly but surely doing.

Votto's return prompts the question of when Ryan Hanigan will get any significant amount of playing time. He certainly proved himself in Votto's absence, as did Jonny Gomes from the DH spot in interleague play. Finding playing time for these players and good offensive combinations that can actually score runs are two huge problems looming over the second half of the season. But this problem isn't really a problem. Better to have too many people than too few.

Hopefully the Reds will be able to continue beating the Cardinals at home this weekend and occupy one of those spots at the top of the division. Once there, I think the Reds will be rejuvenated after the All Star break, then slowly extend that division lead into the fall. Of course there are some problems, but things are starting to fall into place: the bench players are contributing, the first baseman is an MVP candidate, and the starting rotation should be back to normal sometime after the All Star break. Granted, there's a big road trip before the break, but it's in the east against the Phillies and the ailing Mets. My 7-man baseball team with no uniforms and little to none athletic ability could beat the Mets right now, and the Reds played the Phillies hard back in May. This is a scrapping baseball team with lots of upside, but consistency is key to winning and the Reds haven't exactly proven to be consistent just yet. Even so, they've been contending all season long and will continue to do so, but from the 1st and 2nd place positions.

Friday's Games of the Day

The Fourth of July Weekend kicks off with a full schedule of games. The Yankees look to start a new winning streak against the Blue Jays. The Brewers and Cubs continue their seesaw NL Central battle. The Brewers need wins to stay ahead in the division because the Cardinals and Reds are battling for positioning in the division. The Mets and Phillies begin a series that will determine which team is in first in the NL East on Monday. These games, and many more, can be found in Friday's Games of the Day.

Toronto at New York Yankees: The Mariners broke the Yankees seven-game winning streak but are 7-3 in their last 10 games. They look to have A.J. Burnett and company start a new win streak against the Jays and Brian Tallet. Four of Hideki Matsui's 6 hits off Tallet have gone for extra bases, with one being a long ball.

Milwaukee at Chicago Cubs: The Cubs took the first game of this series on Thursday. The Brewers and Jeff Suppan look to even the season series back up at 4-4 against Carlos Zambrano. Derek Lee has 21 hits off Suppan with 11 extra base hits (4 home runs). J.J. Hardy is only 2-for-19 against Zambrano. Mike Cameron is worse, 1-for-13 against Zambrano.

New York Mets at Philadelphia: The Phillies have lost 3 straight and are 3-7 in their last 10 games. They're now tied with the Marlins for first place in the NL East. The Mets find themselves only 1 game behind. This series will determine who's in first place in the division come Monday. The Phillies are relying on Rodrigo Lopez to get the win. Wonderful.

Baseball and psychological issues

Zack Greinke, Dontrelle Willis, Joey Votto, and Khalil Greene all have something in common besides being major leagues. Each have missed time due to performance-hindering anxiety. It's quite chilling to see how this serious issue has made a quick move to the baseball world. Why wouldn't it? Baseball players are prone to psychological issues just as you or I.

Shirley Wang discussed this issue in Wednesday's Wall Street Journal.

It's good to see baseball acknowledging its players can suffer from psychological illness. That's a step in the right direction to getting treatment for players who suffer such illnesses. It's better to have it out there than to have a player suffer in silence and lose his career. These men aren't superhuman simply because they can do things many of us can't with a piece of lumber or a baseball. Knowing that baseball players can suffer psychological illness may help a regular person seek treatment if they know the same issue has befallen a baseball player.

Sunday's Games of the Day

Sunday brings finality to Interleague Play in 2009. The Red Sox, Pirates, Orioles, Rays, Astros, and Yankees are all looking for sweeps. Chien-Ming Wang looks for a way to prevent himself from going 0-7.

Cincinnati at Cleveland: The Indians need a win Sunday to tie the 2009 installment of the Battle of Ohio and keep the Reds from taking the Ohio Cup back to Great American Ballpark. Both teams have won a game this weekend. Joey Votto had two homers in two at-bats off David Huff in their last meeting.

Philadelphia at Toronto: The Phillies managed to win in decisive fashion on Saturday. They're now 2-8 in their last 10 games. Interleague Play has not been particularly kind to them this season; they're 5-12. Jamie Moyer faces Brian Tallet on Sunday. Marco Scutaro has a .438 batting average and three home runs off Jamie Moyer.

Boston at Atlanta: The Sox and Brad Penny look to sweep the Braves and send them to their fifth straight loss. Tommy Hanson will try to prevent that and move to 4-0 on the season. Penny is 8-4 with a 5.13 ERA against the Braves. A win doesn't have to be pretty.

Friday's Games of the Day

Friday brings the final weekend of Interleague Play and the second round of some rivalry series'. Those series' are always fun to see even if you're not from Chicago, New York, or Florida. The natural rivalry series is why we have Interleague Play. Friday also showcases a some talent pitchers. We have good matchups in Toronto, New York, Tampa, and Milwaukee.

Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox: This game doesn't really feature a top-notch pitching matchup. But it is the Crosstown Series. It's tied at 1 game apiece after a rain shortened series at Wrigley earlier this month. Alfonso Soriano is 5-for-8 with 3 home runs off Jose Contreras. Derek Lee, on the other hand, is 3-for-16 against Contreras. Can hot hitting beat a history of inability to hit a specific pitcher? We shall see.

Cincinnati at Cleveland: Joey Votto powered the Reds to a 7-5 victory over Toronto on Thursday. He went 4-for-5 with an RBI double, an RBI single, a solo home run and 2 runs scored. We'll see if he can carry that momentum over to Cleveland. The Reds took 2-of-3 from Cleveland last month. The Indians counter with Travis Hafner who is hitting .355 with 3 home runs and 2 doubles in June. The game is in Cleveland, so he'll take up DH duties.

Philadelphia at Toronto: The matchup of two 4-3 starters, Cole Hamels and Ricky Romero, should distract me from the fact the Jays swept the Phillies at home last week. The Phillies should be alright, this is a road series after all. Scott Rolen has a thirteen-game hitting streak that he'd probably like to extend against one of his former teams.

End the Taveras experiment!

Say one thing for Dusty, he's one loyal manager. Loyal to a fault sometimes. In his latest stubbornness he's holding out for what seems like two months to see if Willy Taveras is ever going to snap out of this Corey Patterson-like funk.

Memo to Dusty: he's not going to! End the experiment. Put Chris Dickerson in center!

If we remember, Dusty was very loyal and patient with Dickerson while everyone was clamoring for Laynce Nix to play everyday. I think he waited about two weeks too long to make that move, but he eventually did. Now is the time (well, two weeks ago would have been a better time) to make the move and put Dickerson in center for Taveras.

Willy got off to a great start, but shortly after his torrid series in Arizona something happened. He stopped hitting basically. He's been TERRIBLE!! I mean I'm pulling for the guy, but he can't do anything right now. Terrible at bats, strikeouts, no walks, obviously no steals.

It's time for a change of pace. If Dickerson starts to struggle again, try Willy again...maybe. Or call Stubbs up and give him a look.

There was a poll on Lance McAlister's site yesterday about what contract you'd rather eliminate if you could pick one. Willy's was the winner. Now, because it's only for two years, that wasn't the one I voted for. I voted for Arroyo simply because he's a .500 or maybe better pitcher who is too up and down for the money he makes, which is like $11 million a year for a couple more. For me, that's the one I want to see go away and give Homer Bailey a chance to sink or swim.

Back to the point...it's time, LONG past time, to end the Taveras trials.

Let Dickerson play. He's a MUCH better CF than LF and has been tearing the cover off the ball. WAKE UP, DUSTY!! Let's give the team a spark before it's too late.

Votto Explains the Stress

From Mark Sheldon's MLBlog:

His 52-year-old father, Joseph, died suddenly in August and that grief came to the surface this year. Here are some snippets of what he said.

"The first day back, I put that all on the back burner and just played baseball until the end of Septmeber. He was in my thoughts and I was dealing with it on a daily basis but as powerful a moment that was to lose your father so young, in a way, I did suppress it. From the beginning of the off-season until Spring Training, I was pretty severely depressed and dealing with the anxieties of grief, sadness and fear and every single emotion you can imagine everyone goes through. I habd a really difficult time with it. I was by myself down in Florida. I just was really looking forward to baseball. And when baseball started back up in February, I kind of did the same thing I did last August and threw it all on the side, threw all of my emotions on the backburner and just played baseball again."
[...]
"There were nights that I couldn't be alone. The one night I was alone - the very first night I was alone - was when I went to the hospital. I couldn't take it. It just got to the point where I felt I was going to die, really."
[...]
We're supposed to be known as mentally tough and able to withstand any type of adversity. This is real life [stuff]. I couldn't take it. I think a lot of people deal with this."

Hopefully Votto can get over this, and play to the ability he showed earlier this year.

There is plenty more in Sheldon's post, so make sure to take a look.
