Bartolo Still Missing

ESPN reports on the strange case of Bartolo Colon:"He never showed up last night," said John Agresti, the Knights' director of media relations. "He's still scheduled to start tonight."[...]The Knights are the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, and Chicago general manager Ken Williams said Tuesday that Colon was supposed to be in Charlotte preparing for Thursday's start. No one was sure of Colon's whereabouts.[...]"I worry about Colon because Colon was a big-time Michael Jackson fan," Guillen told reporters. "He might [watch] the TV and cry all day long. Maybe he is in L.A. at his funeral, because I...

Thursday's Games of the Day

Twelve games are being played on Thursday. I'm trying a new format for Games of the Day. Instead of picking only some of the games, each game will be previewed. Two aces, Tim Lincecum and Felix Hernandez, pitch on Thursday. Roy Halladay may be taking the mound in Tampa Bay as a sort of trade audition. Tommy Hanson will get a test from the Rockies at Coors Field. Paul Konerko looks to continue his hot hitting against the Indians. The Cardinals and Brewers rap up an exciting July series. These games and more can be found below. Toronto at Tampa...

Wednesday's Games of the Day

Six of Wednesday's fifteen games are day games, making Wednesday a getaway day for those twelve teams. Wednesday doesn't feature the best pitching matchups, but does have some good games worth watching. Two All-Star Game bound ten-game winners are pitching on Wednesday. Ryan Sadowski looks to go 3-for-3 in his first three career starts. The Reds and Phillies continue an entertaining series. Oliver Perez returns to the Mets rotation and the NL Central and AL West showdowns continue. Pittsburgh at Houston: The Pirates-Astros series finishes with Charlie Morton and Wandy Rodriguez facing off. If Pittsburgh wins, they'll be only 2...

Mark Buehrle worthy of All-Star Selection

While Mark Buehrle's fourth All-Star selection may not have the same backstory to it as Ryan Franklin's first ever All-Star Game appearance, Buehrle is also one to root for during the All-Star Game. Sure, Buehrle is 130-89 in a career filled accolades. He no-hit Texas in 2007, won two postseason games and recorded a save in Chicago's 2005 World Series winning year (he became the first ever Sox pitcher to start and save consecutive games). Yet, he's still awed by the word "All-Star" preceding his name. 2009 will mark his fourth All-Star appearance. It'd be really easy for Buehrle to...

MLB Top 10: Yanks Making a Push

We're entering the final week before the All-Star break, but most teams have already passed the official midway point of their seasons.  So now that we're half way there in crowning the 2009 world champions, who are the hottest teams in baseball entering this week? 1. New York Yankees (48-33)The Yanks continue to inch their way towards division-leading Boston, trailing in the AL East by a single win.  It's sure to be one hell of a race down the stretch, even if some meaning is lessened by the fact that both teams are likely assured of reaching the playoffs.  For now, I'm sure Yankee fans will take the moral victory of Mark Teixeira beating out Kevin Youkilis for the starting 1B spot on the All-Star team.2. Texas Rangers (45-35)It looks like the AL West is going to have a very competitive division race down the stretch, which is something that...

Big Money and Little Money Both Get Robbed By All-Star Game Voting

What in the name of Willie Mays has happened to my beloved National League? The Senior Circuit continually plays the second half of the Major League Baseball season with the American League's collective cleat protruding from its rear due to the latter's dominance in the All-Star Game. Even casual fans of the diamond know the Mid-Summer Classic's gone to the league with that ridiculous designated hitter for a while now.  Six in a row, 10 of the last 11, and a string of 12 consecutive contests without a loss by the Junior Circuit to be precise. Can you believe it?  The NL's gotta look back on that abysmal, embarrassing tie in Milwaukee with fondness. Ugh. And, if you want to know why, it's because our side is usually of a poorer constitution. Say what you want about the antics from New York and Boston, at least their guys can play. ...

FB365's Morning Drive 7/3/09

In Cincinnati, Chris Dickerson is making a case for the full time centerfield job.  As Willy Taveras continues not to get on base (NOT A SINGLE WALK IN THE MONTH OF JUNE!!)  Dickerson finds himself with a respectable .288 AVG and .389 OBP.  He's not doing much with regards to power or stolen bases, but if by chance Dusty Baker decides to bat him leadoff because, deep breath, HE ACTUALLY GETS ON BASE, then he could see a slight rise in value for NL-only and deep mixed leagues.  Francisco Rodriguez blew the save, his third in 10 days.  Nothing new here.  Frankie has averaged 5.5 blown saves per season since becoming a full time closer, which is about the norm.  This is what I worried about with Kevin Correia.  His fastball velocity was back a little yesterday, but not where it was during is hot streak.  You can see from the chart below (via fangraphs.com) the upward trend in Correia's average velocity and how it dropped significantly his last outing.  Yesterday's outing is represented with the red dot, which indicates an average fastball velocity of just over 91 mph. A.J. Happ is becoming an interesting starter to watch.  Since converting to a full time starter he has shown a nice progression in K/BB rate.  Also, Happ's velocity is showing signs of progression as well.  He's currently owned in only 37% of Yahoo! Leagues.   Franklin Gutierrez stays hot.  He hit .304 with 4 homers and 3 stolen bases in June.  Pitchers are not giving anything to Albert Pujols and he'll take his walks all day long.  The beneficiary?  Ryan Ludwick.  It's been a struggle this season with healthy and a prolonged slump, but he has 7 hits in his last 5 games and 3 RBI in his last 2 games with Pujols getting on in front of him. Derrek Lee didn't just hit 2 homeruns last night.  He hit 2 pure bombs last night.  One was a grand slam and Lee collected 7 RBI on the night.  Lee hit .333 and slugged .973 in June.  Will there be a place for Jake Fox to play once A-Ram returns from the DL? I think I'm done betting against Mark Buehrle....

MLB Top 10: Halos Grab AL West Lead

Sometimes when I think about this list during the weekend before Mondays roll around, things end up looking a bit differently than I pictured.  This was one of those weeks.  Over the weekend, multiple winning streaks were snapped, teams unexpectedly played poorly, and my top ten list underwent some major reconstruction.  The result?  A drastically different list compared to what we would've seen on Friday.  1. Los Angeles Angels (41-32)The Halos have won five straight, including a series win over the red-hot Rockies last week.  They followed up the impressive series win by sweeping the woeful Diamondbacks over the weekend, and they now hold a 1.5 game lead in the AL West over Texas.  They get the chance to widen the gap this week when they continue their road trip in Texas, in what some are calling the biggest series for the Angels this year.2. Tampa Bay Rays (42-35)Don't look...Read more

MLB Great Debates: Which Playoff Contender Needs a Trade to Stay in the Race?

MLB Outsider's Jaymes Langrehr and Kurt Evans debate the issue: Which contending team most needs to make a deal before the July 31 trade deadline in order to stay in the race? Jaymes Langrehr argues that the Brewers desperately need starting pitching:As we get closer to the trade deadline, a good number of teams are developing clear needs that need to be addressed if they're going to stay in playoff contention. Some teams will be able to cope with their weaknesses and still make the playoffs due to their other strengths. Other clubs will need to make a move if they have any chance at contending in the second half. The Milwaukee Brewers are a prime example. Heading into this season, they knew that their pitching wouldn't be as good as it was down the stretch last season. Given the strength of their offense, however, they figured to be in okay...Read more

MLB Outsider - What Is the Ideal Manager?

Ozzie Guillen is at it again.  This time, he's criticizing the buildings in Chicago."Tall?  Short?  What does it matter when they all look like (expetive deleted)," Guillen said this morning.  "No wonder people jump off those buildings.  If I had to stand on top of one of them I'd want to kill myself too."Of course he didn't really say that.  But the things he has said are often shocking and always interesting.  Here are just a few of the higlights, in all their expetive-undeleted glory:On ex-White Sox outfielder Magglio OrdonezI didn't come here to make friends, I came here to win games. I've got a lot of friends. If Magglio doesn't want to be my friend, I'm not going to lose sleep at night. He's a piece of shit. He's another Venezuelan motherfucker. Fuck him. He thinks he's got an enemy? No, he's got a big one. He knows I...Read more

MLB Top 10: No Clear Number One?

The past few weeks, it's been pretty easy to pick out baseball's hottest teams -- we've seen ridiculously long win streaks, surges to the top of divisions, and outstanding performances catapult teams to the top of these rankings.  This week, however, was a bit more difficult.  Heading into Monday, no team had a win streak longer than three games.  So who do you turn to in that case?  How about baseball's best team to this point?1. Los Angeles Dodgers - 35-17Two things remain constant in LA -- the Dodgers are still hot, and Bill Plaschke is still outraged (OUTRAGED, I SAY!) that Manny Ramirez is allowed to disgrace the city...you have to wonder how he'll react if the Dodgers win the World Series with Manny's help once he returns.  Will he demand that they hand the trophy back?  They had a solid week, getting Clint Hurdle fired in Colorado after...Read more

MLB Outsider Mock Draft: Chicago White Sox Select Tim Wheeler

MLB Outsider is hosting a 2009 MLB mock draft, where bloggers from all over come together in an attempt to project the draft results thatwill take place June 9. Baseball Daily Digest's Eric SanInocencio picks for the Chicago White Sox at No. 23. The ChiSox, in need of a center fielder at the big league level, hope Tim Wheeler from Sacramento State can solve their problems.Follow the mock draft here. We can't be more excited for such a talented outfielder to somehow be available to the Chicago White Sox with the 23rd overall selection. Tim Wheeler, a junior outfielder from Sacramento State, brings the premier power/speed combination in the country into our organization. Wheeler has excellent size (6-4, 200) and has enough athleticism to play center field at the major league level. You often hear the term "five-tool talent" through around come draft time, but Wheeler's skill set actually earns him that moniker....Read more

MLB Great Debates: The Ballpark Experience

MLB Outsider's Jaymes Langrehr and Kurt Evans debate the issue: Which experience is better, going to a Major League Baseball game or going to a minor-league one?Jaymes Langrehr says MLB's quality is top-notch:Where I grew up, I was about a three-hour drive east away from Milwaukee County Stadium, and a three-hour drive west away from the Metrodome. I was literally stuck in the middle of nowhere when it came to the MLB map, and looking back, I was definitely jealous of the kids who were able to spend their summers buying cheap Brewers tickets and move their way up to field level (because it's not like anyone was sitting in those seats, anyway). Still, the few major-league games that I was able to attend were incredible -- even though the home team almost always got crushed. Even when your team stinks, there's something special about a Major League game that...Read more

MLB Great Debates: Steroids and the Hall of Fame

MLB Outsider's Jaymes Langrehr and Kurt Evans debate the issue: Should the BBWAA look past the use of performance-enhancing drugs and vote known "steroids guys" into the National Baseball Hall of Fame?Jaymes Langrehr says the writers will eventually have no choice but to vote in tainted players:Once again, the game of baseball has been rocked by a star testing positive for a banned substance. Every time this happens, everyone ends up trying to decide if that player is going to be allowed to enter the Hall of Fame. And every time this happens, all the old time-tested baseball writers voting for the Hall say that the player will get in over their dead bodies. It's getting to the point now, though, that eventually they're going to have to lighten up, or risk enshrining some undeserving players. If they stick to their word, we won't be getting Alex Rodriguez and Manny...Read more
