The Nightmare may continue for Diego Sanchez
Diego Sanchez recently noted on his Myspace page that his next fight would be in February against a yet to be named opponent. The biggest news out of that was that he will remain at 170 pounds in the Welterweight division. There had been rumors circulating that Sanchez was going to drop down to the lightweight division due to his recent outings in the Octagon.
Diego Sanchez had a stellar start to his career. He won season one of The Ultimate Fighter by defeating Kenny Florian. Sanchez then beat the likes of Nick Diaz and Karo Parisyan to start his career 19-0. It appeared that he was on his way to becoming one of the best welterweights in the world. That was until he faced Josh Koscheck at UFC 69 in April. Koscheck scored the biggest win of his career upsetting Sanchez by unanimous decision.
Sanchez’s chance to redeem himself came at UFC 76 in September against Jon Fitch. Fitch had other plans as he scored a win of his own over Sanchez via split decision. That loss sent Sanchez into a tailspin and that’s when talks of moving down in weight surfaced. Sanchez himself has said that he’s a small welterweight and just has a hard time competing with some of the bigger competitors in the division.
I’m a huge fan of Diego Sanchez and I really hope he’s able to bounce back and be a top contender at 170. I just don’t see it happening though. There are too many great athletes at that weight class that can dominate Diego. I hope after his next fight that Sanchez decides to drop down no matter what the outcome of that fight. I think he could easily be right at the top of the lightweight division and would love to see him fight the likes of Roger Huerta, Sean Sherk and the winner of the BJ Penn-Joe Stevenson fight.

I wonder who Diego’s next opponent will be. Koscheck? Joe Lauzon? Sanchez should really move down. He has all of the heart in the world, but the fighters at welterweight are too big and too strong for him. At least lightweight, he would have a chance of actually dominating, IMO.
