Shogun out of match with Iceman
Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was forced to pull out of his June 7th bout with Chuck Liddell on Tuesday. Rua ruptured the ACL in his left knee, the same injury he had surgery to repair last October. There is no timetable for his return to the Octagon.
This injury actually has greater impact on Chuck Liddell than it does Rua. A win over Rua would have given Liddell two straight wins over top contenders in the light-heavyweight division. Although a replacement opponent hasn’t been named yet, there are no top contenders out there for Liddell to fight in June. All other top contenders are currently booked in matches. Even a dominant win over a lesser opponent won’t be enough to guarantee Liddell a title shot.
Rua, still only 26, has plenty of time to recover from this set back and still be a force in the UFC. Unfortunately for Rua, it will just take longer than he thought.
