April 17 - Lottery Team Fans Appreciation Day

Given my near infinite power as Bobcats Bonfire blogger and keeper of the flame, I hereby proclaim April 17th, the day after the NBA regular season ends, as Lottery Team Fans Appreciation Day, in accordance with this month’s Carnival of the NBA (link to be provided after the Carnival goes live this week).

You know who you are. You are the ones who turn on your local broadcast when your squad is up against the Lakers, the Spurs, the Celtics…and just hoping against hope that lightning will strike, (insert your team’s shooting guard here) will get hot, and (insert your team’s power forward/center here) get’s a game changing shot block, pushing your team into that game clinching fast break that crushes the hopes of the Spurs/Celtics/Lakers/Pistons.

But you know it won’t happen.

You’re cruising ESPN’s Mock Draft Lottery machine, spinning it again and again, somehow trying to will your team into the number one spot and Michael Beasley….or at least trying to figure out how not to end up with Brook Lopez.

You take your children to the occasional game, buy them a jersey, have them sit on your lap. Trying to foster a love for a team that may not have seen success in years….or decades…or ever. But you want your little fan to make this team as much a part of their life as it is yours…so that one day THEY can see your squad hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy with champagne running in their eyes and Michele Tafoya scrambling for a locker room interview with your now-genius coach.

This day is for you, fans of the Bobcats, Grizzlies, Kings, Clippers, Bucks, Heat, Knicks, Sonics (especially you, Seattle Sonics fans), Pacers, Bulls, Blazers, Nets, and Timberwolves…and maybe the Nuggets or Warriors. So on April 17, call in sick, kick back on the couch with your favorite adult beverage, and dream about the greener pastures of the playoffs…or at least the number 1 pick in the draft. Because without you, there is no hope. That’s what you bring to the league, to the stadium, and to these blogs every season.

Hope.

When I was a wee lad back in Kankakee, IL, I was a fan of the Seattle Supersonics….I remember them losing in the Finals against the Washington Bullets, then winning the next season, watching the games with my dad. Jack Sikma was from my area (St. Anne, IL), so we all had a little bit of skin in the game.

I am disgusted by what’s happening up there, and really wish there were some way to prevent this move to OKC from happening. You guys don’t deserve that at all…
