Reinsdorf feeling misled
As Mike D’Antoni was introduced today as the new head coach of the New York Knicks, owner of the Chicago Bulls Jerry Reinsdorf finally spoke up with why he isn’t introducing D’Antoni as the Bulls head coach.
“I’m disappointed in him,” Reinsdorf told the Chicago Tribune. “I don’t know what else we could’ve done. He chose to go to New York knowing there was a good chance we would make him an offer. If he had really wanted to be in Chicago, he would’ve waited. Instead, he misled us. It’s not the end of the world, but it is somewhat rude.”
Somethings wrong with the comments are, when he found out D’Antoni’s interest to coach the Bulls, immediate contact should have been established to let him know he was wanted as much as he wanted to be here. Reinsdorf also said “He chose to go to New York knowing there was a good chance we would make him an offer.” If someone doesn’t know completely that an offer is going to be made, why should he be patient and wait when there are other suitors? Reinsdorf also said “If he had really wanted to be in Chicago, he would’ve waited.” Who wants to wait for someone to make a decision on if they want to extend a long-term offer to a coach with a winning record? Money wasn’t even the case, D’Antoni wanted to be here and Reinsdorf wanted to take his time and drag the interviewing process on.
More from Reinsdorf:
“The second subject, I said if we need to get something done this weekend we shouldn’t even bother talking because it will take longer than that,” Reinsdorf told the Tribune.
“He said nothing had to be done over the weekend. I also said if this proceeds to where we want to make an offer, we don’t deal with coach’s agents. He said that’s not a problem and that money wasn’t the most important thing anyway. He said he wanted a job where he was going to be happiest. He said he didn’t want to coach the Knicks.”
Of course anyone could say they don’t want to work somewhere because whatever the reasons maybe. This is the NBA. Millions of dollars are at stake and in even the worst condition, if you have a corporation where management is willing to stand behind you, buy into your philosophy and shows the passion to get you to be a part of it, than you’re going to reconsider. D’Antoni had those aspects from Donnie Walsh and the New York Knicks organization.
So while Reinsdorf was playing chess, D’Antoni and Donnie Walsh were playing checkers.

Great article, I can’t wait for his comments as to why he won’t hire Avery Johnson next.

Thanks Ed, I really hope whatever decision this organization makes will be one that is good right now rather then waiting. If they don’t want to offer a four-year contract to D’Antoni, I wonder how many years are they expecting to give Avery Johnson or Tom Thibodeau.

Hey Chris we did not turn down D’Antoni at all,he chose to go to new york instead of the windy city, whichever coach signs with Chicago will get paid of course, especially if it is Avery Johnson.

Mike D’Antoni chose new york because of more money, and in Chicago,a coach like Phil Jackson is not worth so much money at all, because you have to win first in the windy city.Win first, that’s what Chicago has always been about.

Reinsdorf didn’t turn D’Antoni down, he just simply didn’t show the intrest you’d expect from a coach that has had 4 straight seasons of 54+ wins with his system.
Whichever coach does sign I just want to know how many years his contract will be and how much money he is making.
D’Antoni didn’t take the NYK job because of money because if that was so, he could have recieved a lot more from them and a longer contract. He took the job because he felt wanted and he is being backed by the management there, something he hasn’t gotten in Phoenix with new GM Steve Kerr and probably wouldn’t have got it with John Paxson in Chicago.

We will find a coach who will lead us to title number 7, now that Mike D’Antoni is no longer available, because Avery Johnson is still available, and so will be quite a few others that will be available after the finals. We are in no hurry at all, because great things have always come to those who are always patient.

Title number 7 looks to be a long ways ahead. Having a guy that people would have wanted to play for automatically would have helped boost the morale and effort of this team.
