LeBron 2010

We here at Cavalier Attitude were extremely confident that LeBron was going to stay a Cavalier past his rookie contract. The rules heavily favored it no matter what the talking heads said every day on the cable networks.

He stayed, but with an opt-out clause after three years. After which he is an unrestricted free agent.

I know the rules of the Collective Bargaining Agreement well, so even I can tell you that “unrestricted” is CBA code for “fair game.”

The Cavs won’t have the right to match any offer. There won’t be any “one-year tender” to sign or any coup that would make a possible departure messy and premeditated. Don’t pick up the player option, and it’s open season for teams wanting LeBron - a 25-year old, in-his-prime LeBron who will already have seven years of NBA service.

Jay-Z’s already planning a potential move to Brooklyn. Ushering in the Brooklyn era with LeBron’s debut as a Net makes perfect sense, almost too good to be true from Hova’s standpoint. Donnie Walsh has control of the New York Knicks now, and he’ll definitely be wise to start rebuilding through the draft and moving the big contracts for cap room in 2010.

And since you can’t see LeBron leaving his home state of Ohio for any team other than one located in a huge media market, the Lakers and Clippers might also be big players.

That leaves the Cavaliers. And that leaves Cleveland fans who are numb to the idea of big names leaving their teams through free agency. But it’s good to see that, for once, some fans aren’t just going to sit around and watch it happen without putting in their two cents.

The cats at Real Cavs Fans are launching a “LeBron 2010″ campaign, located at LeBron2010.com. Take it from me: those guys are legit, and they’ll take donations to help contribute to a billboard in the spring/summer of 2010 to send a message to LeBron that Ohio is where he belongs.

Personally, I really hope that the billboard can be done by beginning of the 2009-10 season, the last year before LeBron can opt out (which, assuming good health, he will). The website isn’t completely done yet, and the RCF crew will be doing much more additions in the coming weeks and months to contribute to its growth.

Speaking of contributing, you can contribute through 2010 by clicking on the “Donate till 2010″ link on the bottom left hand corner of the site. Hey, it’s not exactly contributing millions towards LeBron’s new Cavaliers contract, but it’s better than thinking that you have no say or control over the prospect of another high-profile free agent leaving Cleveland in the wind.

LeBron leaving would make Boozer’s messy departure look like an amicable, good-natured trade. But I’m sure I don’t have to mention that.

The key to keeping him in Cleveland is to have a championship team. I haven’t been impressed with the moves Ferry has made and I’m not sure if he can get it done.

Suman…go ahead, man. Do what you gotta do.

And I agree, Ed. I honestly don’t think any of this would be necessary if the Cavs built a strong supporting cast around LeBron. They really need to zero in on some of these teams that are looking to blow it up like Dallas and Phoenix and offer the expiring contracts and draft picks this summer. I really think Jason Terry will be available, and if the Mavs cough up Josh Howard for the rights to Anderson Varejao, Wally’s expiring deal, and a first-round pick or two, you gotta make it happen. Nobody ever thought that Gasol could be had for Kwame, so make it happen, Ferry.
