Posey Is a New Orleans Hornet

Dang nab it!  James Posey signed with the Hornets yesterday, to the tune of $25M over 4 years. It’s not that he didn’t like like being a Celtic, he just followed the money like a Hornet to a piece a hamburg sitting at the picnic table. He’s going to have his financial security well into retirement, and could even challenge for more NBA championships with Chris Paul and Co. Not a bad gig at all for the 31-year old forward.

Posey Memories

Quite frankly, the quiet demeanor of James Posey was a calming factor that fit his role in anchoring the bench for the Celtics. He wasn’t perfect by any means, but he was a consummate team player and fit nicely as the 6th man for this team, typically substituting for Kendrick Perkins (with Garnett at Center), and also able to spell Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen . . . and that is a mouthful indeed.

Upon Posey joining the Celtics, we had this to say about the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of it all.  Certainly it was a coup for the Celtics, and everyone knew it.  I love the Garnett quote presented at Celtics17 here last fall. From the beginning of the 2007-08 season, he spearheaded the strong and under-rated bench that the Celtics used to suprise the NBA in their historic turn-around season.

Posey also amazed with his defense. The highlight for me was the January 31st game against the Mavericks detailed at Celtics17 here, where Posey dismantled the Mavericks in Boston during the last few minutes of the game, a game they won without the services of Kevin Garnett.

Posey is actually pretty limited offensively, but to get the combination of 3-point shooting with his size and nose for the ball is pretty rare. But what he’ll be remembered for most is his ability to hit the shot in the clutch. Whether it be taking the 3-point shot with the shot clock winding down, or hitting the free throws to secure the win at the end of the game. These are James Posey memories that will linger forever in the hearts of Celtics fans.

It is also going to take a while for me to get over the absence of the Posey pre-game routine of hugging the starters and giving them a message before stepping out for the tip-off. Ever wonder what he said? To me, that simple act, that physical embrace, embodied the spirit of ubuntu for the Celtics.

More than a pocketful for Posey in this lucrative deal

To keep things in perspective, John Hollinger at ESPN nailed the topic of why the Celtics made the right choice in not signing him to similar terms. However, it could be argued that they hurt their chances in repeating this year. But perhaps the Celtics can find salvation in facing adversity, and show some resourcefullness in rounding out the bench again this year.

For sure, things will be different on the Celtics squad this season . . . we will miss you James!

There is no one that can fill the hole of James Posey for the Celtics. If the Celtics want to win they need to do something NOW!!!!!!

I think patience may work in the Celtics favor . . . rather than overpay and only get one guy with the MLE money, they could end up getting two good vets, which is what they did last year I believe (Posey, House maybe, Pollard maybe, unless Pollard and House were both for the vet min.)

I agree with Green 17 mostly, especially,”it going to take awhile for me to get over the absence of the pre-game routine of hugging the starters and giving them a message before stepping out for the tip-off.”…and yes,i often wonder what he said, and wonder if it was spiritual words from his learnings as a person,or each and one very new and spontaneous.I wonder now, will he come into Boston,as a opponent, and give his new team mates HUGS,in front of his old team(Celtics),probably so,but it will be hard to swallow,as a big fan of both,Posey, and the Celtics.Im torn a little between the 2.Im still sorting out the lost, and trying to move on.Sometimes,it hard to convince yourself, that others made the right decision, when you know,if i was in DA’s position,i would have gone the distance, and retained his services. The next big thing,i often wondered along the way(season),how much, and how far did “Ubuntu”spread,in the Celtic organization. From the looks of things,it stopped at the locker room.Loyalty, and commitment,is something i got from the Ubuntu assemblence, which is something that should carry from one to the other,I also, wonder, will Ubuntu be a vocal part of the strive for bannner #18,or will they have to dimantle the that as well.Remember,a key component of Ubuntu, has been shipped off to NO,Will J.Posey share all what he learned, and our(Celtic)locker room secrets to the opposing team.At this moment,i feel as though,we have been at war,and one of our troops, have gone over to the enemy. At least its not the Lakers.
