Live Pre-Draft Thread

UPDATED: 6:45

With the draft less than two hours away, the rumors are flying. Stay tuned all night to Father Knickerbocker and Draft University for LIVE coverage discussing all the rumors, picks, trades and providing instant analysis from now till after the draft.

For the latest rumors make sure to also check out Real GM and HoopsHype, which covers all of the latest rumors from around the NBA.

Draft Rumors:

1. Oden To Portland:

While the agent for Greg Oden says they have not been told anything from Portland, all signs indicate the Oden will be the first pick in the draft tonight.

2. Atlanta Has Eyes On Hortford:

While there has been some debate on what the Hawks would do with the third pick, all signs are pointing to them taking Hortford at three and then AC Law at 11.

3. Boston Thinking YI:

With the fifth pick in the draft, the Celtics are leaning towards taking Yi and building around him.

4. Charlotte Talking Trade At Pick 8:

Rumors are stating that the Bobcats are looking to deal the eight pick, it will be interesting to see who comes calling if they decide to deal the pick. Keep a close eye on Phoenix, who has been trying to move into the top 10, presumably to take Corey Brewer or Joakim Noah.

5. Chandler to NY:

According to the NY Post, Chandler is in New York, and all signs are pointing to him being the Knicks pick at 23. Dick Vitale, previewing the draft, said Chandler is one of his sleepers, who thinks can have a big impact in the pros.

Trade Rumors:

1. Is Garnett Phoenix Bound and Amare Heading to Charlotte:

While the original three team deal seems dead, Minnesota is still looking to move Kevin Garnett. The latest rumor has Charlotte being involved, taking the place of Atlanta. Charlotte would receive Amare Stoudamire, Phoenix would get KG and Minnesota would get the 8th pick in the draft, another player from Minnesota and expiring contracts. It seems like that Minnesota is so desperate right now to deal KG, that they are gonna settle for a package, nowhere near equivalent to KG.

2. Ray Allen to Boston:

Rumors came abound today that Seattle is fielding offers for star shooting guard Ray Allen. They have had talks with Boston about trading Allen for the 5th pick and some players.

3. Jermaine O’Neal to New Jersey:

A blockbuster trade that would send Jermaine O’Neal to New Jersey to team up with Jason Kidd and Vince Carter has been discussed. Indiana would receive Richard Jefferson, Nenad Kristic, and Jared Collins.

4. Zach Randoloph to New York:

The rumor that will get this site discussing, is the possible deal that is being discussed on both Sports Illustrated, Yahoo, and ESPN. The rumor is that the Knicks and Portland are talking about a deal that would send Zach Randolph and possibly another player, Yahoo says Martell Webster for Channing Frye and Steve Francis.

While Randolph is only 25 and is a dominant low post scorer, averaging over 23 points and 10 rebounds last season. He still have four years remaining on his contract for 61 million dollars. In my eyes that is the only negative about this deal. The length of the contract, would possibly prevent them from having a chance at going after LeBron, Carmelo, Wade, or Kobe when they became free agents in a few years.

If they could get back Webster, a young talented shooting guard, who was a top five pick just a few years ago, I think it is a deal to good to pass up. There are also rumors that Randolph does not want to play in New York. Stay tuned for this developing story.

STAY TUNED FOR UPDATES ALL NIGHT

I would love to get rid of Francis and Frye and also add Randolph and Webster at the same time. Webster has not done much yet but is still very young and could turn into a deadly shooter some day. Randolph would be a great option next to Curry. He put up great numbers in the West and is young like Curry. Those 2 guys together could be a dominant combo for years to come.

Also, having a PG like Marbury that can always score and 2 guys that need double teams down low would allow Webster to take open shots and become the shooter everyone thought that he would become.

Paul- Your last post said you think the pick will be Cook, if you are right then I would not be upset at all. He are my reasons:

He can shoot 3’s, the Knicks need a 3 point shooter

He can run the floor and finish, the Knicks like doing that

He can score in any way, the Knicks need someone like that

His negative right now is his defense but let’s think about that. He is fast, quick hands, strong, long arms, big. He has potential to be a very good defender. Who could teach a young guard with alot of potential how to play defense better then Isiah Thomas? Uhhhhhhhhh.. nobody.

Dan- I agree with both your posts. I think if Webster is in the deal, its a move you have to make.

As for cook, I think you hit it on the head, he is everything the Knicks need. I believe the pick will be him or Chandler.

Dan, will be on the live thread talking during the draft??

Yes, I will be stating my opinion on any big news or info that involves the Knicks.

The Bobcats might be looking to grab Cook at 22, that would be upsetting but I have confidence in Isiah to get the right guy.

Look at the update above on the Knicks and Chandler, it looks like he may be the pick.

Just to continue the story about Randolph a little bit, I have read possibly that the Knicks might have to take on Dan Dickau’s contract along with Randolph in exchange for Francis or Malik Rose and Channing Frye. I like the deal a lot more with Webster in it however…Randolph is a beast though!

According to Andy Katz, the Knicks/Blazers deal is on life support.

Randolph would be a huge mistake
    1) He scored a lot because he shot a lot. His points per shot was 1.5, which is average. The Knicks have an average offense.
    2) He is a good rebounder but the Knicks are already a good rebounding team. Their offensive rebounding differential was 1.8, fourth in the league.
    3) He averaged 0.2 blocks per game - the Knick are really weak here.
    4) He averaged 3.2 TO per game - another Knick weakness - we turned it over 15% of possessions last year, worst in the league and 1.5% worse than the average player.

The guy we should get is Kirilenko
    1) He doesn’t shoot much but we have plenty of shooters and you only get 95 shots per game no matter how many guys you have who like to shoot.
    2) Kiri blocks shots
    3) Kiri is a great man on defender
    4) Kiri gets steals (Knicks had a 3 per game TO differential last year - worst in the league).
    5) Kiri is not as nuts as Randolph.
    6) Kiri can play the 4 and the 5.
    7) Kiri is a good rebounder - Imagine him with Lee - we’d be an even better rebounding team
    8) Utah might dump him bc he makes a lot of money.

Paul - You’re doing a great job here, bro. I’d like to see Derrick Byars to slip to the Knicks he’s such a complete player and plays with good energy, I really like him. Marco Balinelli out of Europe can really, really shoot it I like him at 23 also.

As for Randolph, I’d love to see the Knicks be able to acquire him in a deal where they get rid of Francis. But I don’t like the fact that he could hold back Isiah’s plan of getting under the cap again to acquire some elites in future off-seasons.

If they can make something happen to bring J O’Neal to play with Eddy Curry that would really make the Knicks front line a good one. O’Neal could go cheap - maybe the #23, Frye and a contract to make it work.

  12. Matthew Cohen says:

    June 28th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

    O’Neal would not go cheap.

Larry Bird is not stupid and O’Neal is a great player.

We won’t get him for a bag of peanuts.

Channing Frye sucks - he is a below average offensive player and doesn’t block shots or rebound particularly well.

Hazem and Matt thanks for the comments.

Make sure you go up to the new thread up above, once the draft starts.

Matt, I think Zach would give the KNicks another low post threat, and be a nice addition, but right now the chances seem slim.

Hazem- thanks for the compliment. Hopefully you guys stick around tonight, and join the fun. This is gonna be one of the more interseting drafts and trades in years.

  14. Hazem Kiswani says:

    June 28th, 2007 at 6:24 pm

Cohen - Bird wants to get into the first round, O’Neal doesn’t want to be in Indiana and Bird has tried repeatedly to deal him.

Frye sucks doesn’t really constitute an argument, although I do agree with you that he doesn’t do anything particularly well.

With that said, he has been on several team’s radars and is always a piece other teams have asked about.

The #23 pick, Channing Frye, and Malik Rose isn’t a “bag of peanuts” as far as I’m concerned. Bird gets into the first round like he wanted, gets a solid young player in Frye, and an expiring contract in Rose that will open up cap space down the line for them.

    June 28th, 2007 at 6:26 pm

Paul - I’m with you about the draft. G101 has been a little quiet lately man, I tried putting something together over there today.

I really want the Knicks to make a move to bring in another veteran scorer to play with Curry and Marbury.

  16. Paul Perdichizzi says:

    June 28th, 2007 at 6:31 pm

Yea I dont think the Knicks have what it takes to land JO, I think the Nets have a great chance and would be very dangerous, with that acquistion.

Yea G101 is quiet, until camp opens, we need to get more of those Gmen fans, to the Knicks site. There must be some that are as die hard Knicks fans as they are Giants fans.

If you guys can, move up to the new thread for the draft, I will post any rumors in the comments section and update the main page with the picks as they are made.
