Knicks fill Nets?

Disclaimer: This is purely my speculation and a thought that popped into my head. That’s all it is. Don’t ask me for sources or anything else because it’s not coming. I’m going to bring a few options available on the market I find interesting and would like to start an open discussion about. This is the first.
———————————————————————-
Through all of this free agent talk I made the previous list of unrestricted free agents I’d be open to. I don’t look at restricted free agents until I see if they are offered qualifying offers from their respective teams. For the most part I don’t mess with RFAs because the other team gets to math any offer made but in reality it’s not the end of the world. There’s a lot worse thing than not signing someone because another team outbid or matched your offer.

That being said, there is a local European talent who has just received a $2.7 million qualifying offer from his team, the New Jersey Nets Nenad Krstic. The 7-foot forward’s status with the nets could be affected by the acquisition of Yi Jianlian.

I’m not saying Donnie Walsh should dump $40 million on Krstic but I’d spend at least $4 million a year for his talents. Krstic is a power forward. That would almost certainly eliminate him from Walsh’s thoughts since Danilo Gallinari will now be playing power forward. The reason for the exception in my eyes this time is Danilo could either play small forward or better yet Krstic could play center for us. I think Krstic would be a MONSTER center in Mike D’Antoni’s system. Our new center needs to be an athletic big man who can run the floor. We can use some of the money left form the exception to Chris Duhon. If the Nets pulled him back maybe we could work a sign-and-trade out with them. How about using a power forward?

Imagine…
PG: Chris Duhon
SG: Jamal Crawford
SF: Renaldo Balkman
PF: Danilo “D-Lo” Gallinari
C: Nenad Krstic

That sounds good to me. I think that would be fun to watch. You guys?

I have to say, assuming Duhon signs, I wouldn’t mind if Sebastian Telfair, Carlos Arroyo or Tyronn Lue came in as well. I wouldn’t mind having any of them as our backup PG. They’d all be upgrades to Mardy.

Hey I got a fresh trade through the trade machine. What do you think?

    Dallas Mavericks get–
    Zach Randolph
    Salary: $14,666,667 Years Remaining: 3

    Malik Rose
    Salary: $7,647,500 Years Remaining: 1

    New York Knicks get–
    Josh Howard
    Salary: $9,945,000 Years Remaining: 2

    Eddie Jones
    Salary: $1,976,400 Years Remaining: 1

    Erick Dampier
    Salary: $11,553,000 Years Remaining: 3

The Mav’s get an offensive minded post man to team with Dirk. They also receive an expiring contract. The Knicks get a big man who has a contract 1 year longer than the Knicks would like but its still a reduced about from the equally long Zach Randolph contract. They also get a backup PG/SG/SF with a small expiring contract in Eddie Jones. On top of it they get a star-in-the-making Josh Howard to start at SF. The best part is he will come off the books in 2010 like the office would want. What do you guys think?

Balkman will NEVER be a starter on an NBA team. Anybody who watched the Knicks last year knows that Wilson Chandler has far superior basketball skills.

Balkman…I’d be surprised if he’s on the Knicks by mid-year.

It’s looking like Duhon might be heading to the Magic. I’d be a fan of using some (not all) of the MLE on Krystic and maybe trying to send David Lee to Charlotte for Felton (I remember reading that that deal had been rumored to be in the works).

    PG: Felton
    SG: Crawford
    SF: Chandler
    PF: Danillo
    C: Krystic
Bench: Nate, Balkman, Curry, whatever we can get back in a trade for Randolph

Yeah, I’m hearing that Duhon might be headed to Orlando. I also heard that option #2 for D’Antoni and Walsh is Sebastian Telfair. I would be happy with Telfair.
As for Krstic, I don’t know everything about his game but he’s got size and he is still young. I’ll take him if he wants a 2 year contract.

  7. Shocker says:

    July 3rd, 2008 at 9:52 am

I think if the Knicks want him, they have to want him for more than 2 years. The Nets, who are also trying to preserve cap room for 2010 would probably match most offers for 2 years. They would have to think twice about matching a 3 or more year offer.

    Couple of quick updates:

Chris Duhon is expected to make his decision today - and it’s down to the Knicks and Orlando. Listen, we shouldn’t all assume he’s go to Orlando now but we have to be aware of it. He’s being offered about the same money by the Knicks he made in Chicago. The difference is in NY he can definitely start but the team wont be great. In Orlando he’ll be with one of the best young teams in the NBA who might be able to compete but he might have to come off the bench. We’ll see what happens.
    New York Post

The Nets made a $2.7 million qualifying offer to restricted free agent Nenad Krstic last week and are said to be interested in trading the 7-foot forward if they do sign him. Krstic is reportedly looking for a two- or three-year deal. This could be an opportunity to get a solid starter on the cheap for the price of a Lee package.

Fred if only your opinion mattered

As I said before the Knicks need to keep D-Lee not only for the fans but as we have seen ourselves he can play. Before Z-Bo he would have been the starting PF and most likely had better numbers, don’t forget he is a bench player getting double- double.

I dont not want Telfair, he is bad at every aspect of the game. He cannot shoot, he does not play defense and he turns the ball over all the time and he is short, he gets owned by even normal sized PGs. Dan S idk if you know anything if you would actually want Telfair on your team, why do you think he continues to go from team to team at the age he is…ugh some people just do not get it

  12. gianthinker says:

    July 3rd, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Andrew Ganeev-He can play but if the head coach doesn’t like him, even though all of a sudden you’ll be hearing he does if they dont trade him, then he wont be around.

  13. Dan S says:

    July 3rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Money Mike- Who is your choice? Telfair is only 23 and he has tons of potential. He just needs to be in a situation where he can play to his strengths and not worry about his size hurting him. Telfair is FAST and his best attribute is his quickness. In D’Antoni’s system the PG does not need to be big and strong. You have to be faster then your opponent and that’s what Telfair can do. He had 6APG on a BAD team that only had Jefferson as a real scorer. He was 10th in the NBA in AST/TO ratio. That is one of the most important stats of a PG and he is 10th!!!!! That is ahead of Nash, Parker, Williams, Felton, Kidd, Rondo, Nelson, Hinrich, Bibby, Lowry, and Davis. Telfair has a .53STL/TO while Nash has a .18STL/TO. Nash is only 15lbs. heavier than Telfair. He only took 9 shots/game so he is not a ballhog. Don’t try to call me out and act like I don’t know anything when you are the stupid one.

well, its true, at least telfair would fit the system….no defense. and I hate to say it, but that front court doesnt sound very intimidating. (kristic and d-lo) I like the way the celtics did it with garnett and perkins. we need something like that. A perkins type of guy to replace curry..because curry sux. no shot blocking, no rebounding, no defense. I think D-lo would benefit tremdously from having a tough enforcer type of guy to take the pressure off of him and at the same time provide leadership when things get testy and the banging begins. They need defense and rebounding, especially if they trade lee. I hope D-ant will at least try to improve his defensive reputation.

I would try to sign Nenad but i wouldnt trade D Lee for him. If we were able to sign him and keep Lee i would love it. I think Duhon will go to Orlando, i would have liked if he signed here, but i think there are other guys out there that can help, one guy i am hoping for via trade is Heinrich, i know reports said Mike D dont like him (when he was thinking about the Bulls job), but i think it would be a very fair trade (unwanted for unwanted) if we traded Zach and Balkman for Heinrich and Tytus Thomas ( the salaries match)

I think the Bulls should do it cuase they need low post scoring and balkman would be just a throw in for salary reasons.

I think the knicks should do this because we need a PG and heinrich is a big gaurd and is proven (even though he had a bad year last year but his prior year he was very good). If we acquired Heinrich we would help us to save money on the cap becuase his contract goes down as the years past, so he wouldnt put a huge restriction on our cap come 2010. I like him cause he is a big gaurd can shoot and sees the floor well.

As for Thomas, i would love to have him in Mike D’s system, i know he seems like a bust in chicago but in a runing system i think he would thrive. He averaged 6.8pts 4.6 rebs, 1blk per game when he was getting ONLY 17.9 mins a game, can u imagine if he was getting 25-30 mins per game?

My starting 5 then would be

    PG Heinrich
    SG Crawford
    SF Rooster
    PF Lee
    C Nenad
with Nate, Curry, Thomas, Chandler as the regular rotation players off the bench. What do u guys think of that line up and how many wins do u think that line up can produce? i say 42-45

Giantthinker- I dont like Balkman in your line up, i would rather have Chandler starting if healthy.

Dan S - If yoiu actually watched the games you would know how he got those numbers.those 4 assists come from him taking the ball and giving it to jefferson in the post and then jefferson scoring. no skill is involved in those assists, i could have gotten 6 apg on that team, and i suck a bball. He is a horrible shooter something d’antoni does not like (only 40% from a guy who only takes 9 shots a game is horrible), he is his cousin except worse at everything. He is the #58 ranked PG in the NBA according to Hollinger, thats only PGs and he is ranked #58 abd the list only goes to #70. Even Duhon is considered a more efficient offensive player as he is ranked #55 and he can play defense. The guy has been in the league for 4 years and has not shown any real improvement. Sure he has skill but he has zero basketball smarts. All steals mean is he is quick but he cant man up anyone. And dont ever try and compare telfair to nash #3 on hollingers list. Basketball isnt like baseball the stats do not always tell the whole story, Telfair sucks, there is a reason he has been let go by so many teams, and your just wrong, anyone who knows bball would tell you that. game over. Oh that Nate Robinson, who is already a small quick guy, yeah he ranks #19 and marbury is #26…thats how bad a player Telfair is….

  17. Dan S says:

    July 4th, 2008 at 8:44 am

Are you really going to base your point on Hollinger’s rankings? He uses a bad system that doesn’t correctly show who is better and Telfair would be in a run and gun system in NY so his stats would improve. These rankings have TJ Ford as the 6th best PG in the NBA. Are you kidding me??? Toronto fans wanted him out because he wasn’t that good. Telfair shoots 40% but Duhon shoots 38% and he only took 5 shots a game. You think having Jefferson is better then having a team FULL of talent like the Spurs, Suns, Mavericks, or being with a star like Denver, Cleveland, Orlando? PG’s on those teams would see their stats drop if they were on the Timberwolves. This system that D’Antoni runs is a fast offensive gameplan. D’Antoni doesn’t care about his PG manning up on the opponent. He cares about him getting the ball and finishing on the other end. We will win our games by scoring 100, not holding our opponent to 80. And I’ll ask once again, Who would you choose instead of Telfair? Assuming Duhon is in Orlando and we don’t make a trade, which free agent PG do you know that will be better then Telfair?

“If yoiu actually watched the games you would know how he got those numbers.those 4 assists come from him taking the ball and giving it to jefferson in the post and then jefferson scoring”- Wow, you are smart. That’s what Parker does with Duncan, Nelson does with Howard, Nash does with Amare, Kobe does with Gasol, Paul does with Chandler/West, etc. Those PG’s all have 3 point shooters too where they just pass it to the wing and guys shoot which gives them like 2-3 more assists/game. Telfair didn’t have the weapons that most PG’s have and he still had 6 assists/game.
The PG’s job is to give the ball to the scorer and that’s what he did. That is basketball and every PG does it. The point of being a point guard is to give the ball to your best players. Have you ever watched a game? Gibson just hands LeBron the ball and he goes and dunks. Does Gibson suck because he gives him the ball and that is why he has any assists? I know Telfair is not a great PG but he could start. There is nobody better then him available. We are trying to get young players- he is young, we are trying to get fast players- he is fast, we are trying to get players who are cheap and have 2 year contracts- Telfair would take a 2 year contract to play in NY. If D’Antoni wants him then he obviously thinks that he can work. Now lets hear your big plan. Who would you get?

LOL, Dan, Jay to the son, you guys are taking me too seriously. I cant believe everyone took me so seriously. I thought it was funny. OF COURSE BALKMAN WOULDN’T START. LOL! I put him in there because of his nose….for defensive purposes. Lol! Obviously that would be a spot for Chandler.

  20. Money Mike says:

    July 4th, 2008 at 9:22 am

wow, all those things you just said are just not even true…first off all Parker drives and then kicks it out, to his 3pt shooters, and duncan who actually has a mid range game cause he makes them wide open, and people have to double team him bacuase he is one of the best driving PGs in the game. Nash is an amazing passer who makes everyone open because he is decent going to the basket but also one of the highest percentage shooters in the game. Kobe is a SG so to compare is just retarded since his game is some much different from what a PGs is suppose to be, Nelson is not a great passing PG but he is extremely quick and shoots 47% from the field and 41% from 3pt, so although he he isnt a great passer he is still gets people open and if he does do the same thing as Telfair cause Howard does not have a good short jumper, then fine, but he is still much better than Telfair, Paul is on another level to every other point guard in the game and is the best since Magic hands down, he makes everyone open…its not even fair bringing his name up in this conversation, Gibson? he is barely a PG, he has no assists cause yes he gives it LeBron and since after LeBron puts it on the floor he doesnt get and assist anymore, so i wouldnt want gibson he is an undersized SG really

  21. Money Mike says:

    July 4th, 2008 at 9:45 am

I know Hollingers ranking arent the end all be all, but TJ Ford is one of the best PGs, he just got hurt but the guy can run a game. His stats take how efficient you are, usually as you play more minutes your numbers will decrease some do you getting tired and such. But his rankings are usually pretty accurate and it is a trusted by many…so idk what you are talking about there, no system is perfect but his is pretty damn good…

There would be a few guys id pick over Telfair…Tinsley - cant shoot much like Telfair but could run the point and everyone know he can distribute the ball, Carlos Arroyo - shoots the ball (45%), and run while being a decent leader, something Telfair is not. Those are two guys right there, neither of them are the answer but both would actually be able to bring something to the team…As a said a bunch of times before…there is a reason no one wants ot hold onto a 23 yr PG as the next teams he signs with will be his 4TH TEAM!…i know they were not great teams, but is he was anything worth looking at he would have been able to make them decent cause they had some talent, but when he was there they were all one of the worst, if not the worst team at the time, that says somthing and nor will he ever be a winner, he has never been a winner, so you can take that garbage elsewhere, this conversation is over and there is no way to back up anything you have to say…

Money Mike- Now that Duhon agreed to the deal I am not going to go on anymore. I only have 1 thing left to say. You gave me Tinsley, I asked you for free agents and he is on the Pacers. Even if he does get bought out Telfair is a better shooter then him and Tinsley is past his prime. I can’t wait until the next topic comes along so you can tell me that I don’t know anything again. You sound so cool when you tell me that I’m wrong about everything I say. You are probaly like 50 years old and upset because you miss the days of Bird and Magic. You probably can’t even play basketball you loser.
