LL: Gigantor has 6 blocks

Every time I watch Andrew Bynum extend himself and dunk the ball or block a shot; he reminds me of a cartoon I watched as a kid called Gigantor. Gigantor was a space age robot controlled by a 12 year old boy name Jimmy Sparks, and he was bigger then big, stronger then strong and more if you listen to the song.

This is not to say that Andrew Bynum is robotic, because he’s not, but whenever he wants too, he can completely dominate a game and I haven’t seen anyone stop him all year. In the Lakers win over the Clippers last night (113-92) he had 14 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. He also continued his assault on the rim, with a host of powerful dunks. Many of the dunks were Gigantor like, as when he swooped in he practically ripped down the rim and backboard with it. Many people are clamoring for Chris Kaman to be in the all star game, but I’ll take Andrew over Chris any day of the week. On one play, when Andrew was rising up for one of his Gigantor jams, I saw Kaman just give it to him. The ball was being dunked through the rim at speeds of upwards of 100 miles an hour, and no one wants to get a concussion that way.

Overall the Lakers have looked quite good in the last week with the only set back being the loss at Golden State earlier in the week. The Lakers currently sit at 14-9 and are two and a half games back of Phoenix for the Pacific division lead.

Kobe also had a great game last night with 32 points and Sasha Vujacic had a great fourth quarter putting up 14 as the Lakers continue to get contributions from across the board.

In other news, I was surprised to hear Otis Smith make a Kobe comment. What Otis said was, “You might see things start happening a little more, maybe with Kobe, if there’s anything there,” Smith said. “If you had a deal in the works, you can now get something done.”

If Kobe was going to be traded to Orlando, wouldn’t it make sense for Smith to keep quiet? Also, why make the statement? Kobe is under contract and cannot opt out until the summer of 2009, so isn’t this a case of tampering? I think the Magic are still a little upset at Shaq coming to LA and winning 3 championship rings, so perhaps those sour grapes spurred the comment. I mean, Phil Jackson can’t go out and say that he thinks he will be able to acquire Jason Kidd because of his recent migraines without being fined, can he? I always thought league executives were prohibited from making comments about players that were under contract. Maybe one of my knowledgeable readers can help me with this. My opinion, Kobe will be with the Lakers until he retires.

Anyway, the Lakers embark on a four game road trip with stops in Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia and New York before hosting Phoenix on Christmas day.

I think Otis was talking in general about trades not specifically with Orlando. I believe a reporter asked if with the passing of Dec. 15 (when free agents signed over the summer are eligible for trade) we would see more trading and you quoted his answer.

No one else has even mentioned it so you are probably right. I still don’t think it’s cool as we don’t need the headache.
