Believing in Magic

Orlando tops the Celtics, prove to be an elite NBA team

It was a playoff atmosphere in Orlando as the Magic (9-2) beat the punks from Boston (8-1) 104-102 Sunday night. That’s right, I said punks. The Magic overcame Celtic cheap shots, questionable officiating, and not to mention the wrath of three tremendous All-Stars, to give the Magic a tremendous W.

With the win, Orlando made the statement win I was talking about, handing the Celtics their first loss of the season, proving that they are one of the best teams of the NBA.

The Magic started the game off hot and built a 20 point lead at one point, but the Celtics fought back and eventually took the lead with just over six-minutes remaining. Orlando fought back with a terrific team effort. Dwight Howard led the Magic 24 points and six rebounds. Rashard Lewis dropped 22 and Hedo Turkoglu added another 16. Jameer Nelson was crucial to Orlando’s victory as he did it all, scoring 18 points, grabbing 5 rebound and dishing out 6 assists. Keith Bogans and Trevor Ariza also helped out, especially on the defensive end.

Boston shot 53% from the floor and was led by 28 points. Rajon Ronodo had a good game with 18 points and five assists and Ray Allen put in 19. Kevin Garnett had only 14 points but pulled down 14 boards.

There, I got the stats out of the way, now its time to talk about the game…

I called the Celtics punks and I’m sure some Boston fans might get mad, but from my perspective that’s exactly what they were, so I will validate my claim. I understand going to the “Hacka Howard” technique and I advocate delivering tough fouls, but the Celtics took plenty of cheap shots. Goons like Scott Pollard and Brian Scalabrine came in and fouled Dwight, which again, I get. However, they didn’t just foul him, they grabbed by the neck and pulled him down hard. Kendrick Perkins had two hands around Howard at one point and looked like he was tackling him. Then after these fouls, the Celtics had the nerve to whine and cry to the referees…

I was proud of the way Dwight handled himself. Usually he is smiling and joking but he wasn’t against the Celtics. Dwight got hacked on plenty of occasions and he made sure the Celtics didn’t get away with it as he shoved them off. In fact, Howard got in several altercations after some specifically hard fouls. He still kept at it and really developed as a player last night, showing mental and physical toughness against a great team…

Orlando also overcame some bad officiating to the end. I know the refs weren’t perfect either way, but the no calls on Dwight were awfully bad, especially when Orlando’s usually unbiased announcers were saying so…

This game was definitely a statement game, as much as one you can make in an 82 game season anyway. Orlando had lost to two great teams in the Pistons and the Suns and they needed this win to prove that they are a top team in the NBA. I said earlier the game had a playoff atmosphere and it did as both squads were diving for loose balls and constantly scrapping. At one point, both Doc Rivers and Stan Van Gundy had to come onto the floor to calm their players down. The intensity was amazing and while I was upset with some of the aspects of the game, it appears that the two teams are developing a rivalry that will hopefully carry through the playoffs. The Magic appear to be a top team in the NBA and while this was a terrific victory, Orlando will have to regroup and face the 8-2 New Orleans Hornets tonight.

The Magic dominated the 1st half.

The 2nd half hit, and they didn’t play bad. I thought they held their own against a hot Celtics team in the 3rd quarter.

Then the 4th quarter hit, and again, they did what they could.

    A couple thoughts:

Was it just me, or could the Magic not get a break in the 2nd half?

A few days ago we were talking about “continuation”, or “in the act of shooting” plays. Can someone explain to me why and how Dwight got robbed of at least 2 of those tonight? If Lebron jumping before ever doing anything with his arms and the ball 10 feet behind the 3 point line means he’s shooting, then I think the same can be said for Dwight, when he is directly under the rim, ball already picked up, and getting hacked the hell out of.

Like I said before, big men take the worst abuse. In the meantime, on the other end, we get to see Pierce falling to the floor for what?

Since I’m talking about Dwight, why not do a little more. I was happy to see him show a little anger. It reminded me of the early 90’s, watching teams play physical against Shaq. You know, I get it, Dwight is big, Dwight is strong, but that doesn’t mean its okay for opposing scrubs to come in and throw cheap shots at him. The refs need to do a better job. Watching the game, I was ready to fight; or maybe that was just because it was in HD.

KG is the man. How can anyone not love that basketball player? He has the skills on a MVP, yet he battles every single damn game like it’s his last. Even better, he just plays basketball. Sure he gets fired up, but he doesn’t whine, he doesn’t flop, he just plays. I really respect that man.

We’ve all heard of the big 3. Well, you know what, the Magic have a big 3 of there own. Hell, we might even have a big 4. Our weak area remains to be the bench, but I’d put our “fab 5″ against anyone in the league.

I don’t care what Rondo’s numbers were tonight, he and Perkins are some of the worst starting pgs and centers of the league.

One last note about the Celtics… They’ve had a great start, and I think they’ll be at the top of the East; but the league gave them a total cake schedule to start out this season. We’ll see how good they are once they actually play a few games on the road, or some respectable teams. To date, they’ve only beat 1, I repeat 1 team above .500 (Denver).

Magic fans should have expected this win. We’ve been kicking it on the road, and it’s about time we start doing the same at home.

The Magic need to start dominating their home court, PERIOD; and when that happens, the Magic will be a major force.

I agree with you on many points Damien…winning at home for instance is something we need to start doing. That being said, Orlando needs its fans to start showing up loud like they did yesterday.

It wasnt just you, the Magic couldnt catch a break in the second half. In the first, the refs decided to let them play, which is great. However, things started getting out of control. Goons were comnig out and taking cheap shots at Howard. I get fouling but you dont grab a player by his neck when he’s in mid air. The Celtics were doing that all night and it was great that Dwight got pissed and started throwing some elbows back. If the refs arent gonig to take care of you, you have to take care of yourself, for safety sake. One play, Pollard hacked Dwight across the arms and no there was no fould…Pollard actually stopped playing because he knew there should have been a foul and was totally surprised by it.

I do disagree with KG, he is a fantastic player that can do it all, but he did whine an awful lot. At one point in the first quarter, he stopped and looked at the ref instead of running up floor. I guess these guys are use to getting all the calls and the refs were letting them play tonight, but maybe they let them play a little too much

By the way, the HD was nice but I too got a little rambunxious with some of the cheap shots on Dwight and I freaked out my roomate with some of my screaming, i dont think he was expecting it.

  4. Anders says:

    November 19th, 2007 at 9:14 am

As I was watching the game last night I was thinking, “These guys are a bunch of punks!” And it wasn’t just the scrubs. KG came out throwing his shoulder into people on the loose ball to begin with. But he did settle down eventually. I got WAY out of hand with Scrubabrine, Pollard, and Perkins literally punching and grabbing Dwight.

Also as for the technical, Dwight stayed very composed. Those guys are lucky he didn’t act like a typical pissed off 21 year old 7 ft bionical freak and punch somebodies head off.

The biggest weakness with the Celtics, is that they have the worst coach in the NBA. And you could tell on the “game strategy” last night.

Magic strategy; gaurd the big three and leave the other 2 alone. And guess what, it actually worked. Rondo is nothing but a little punk, and was acting cocky because he was hitting WIDE OPEN SHOTS. I loved when Rondo, after the play, tried to strip the ball out of Arroyo’s hand (and missed), and then continued to stair him down. Arroyo of course didn’t give him the time of day, but it shows the attitude the Celtics had last night.

Damien, you’re absolutely right. It was almost like the Refs were letting Dwight be hit, and he did get robbed. Hopefully the Refs were talked to and that type of play towards Dwight will be on watch from now on.

It’s just funny to see other people’s opinions. This is from the MVN celtics page:

“I wasn’t aware of it but apparently Dwight Howard is the new Shaq. He can push, shove, bark, jaw and do whatever he wants to opponents and get away with it. He gets EVERY call.”

He does give Dwight and the Magic credit, but it’s just funny how some people will see one thing, and others will see something completely different.

  6. Brendan Sonnone says:

    November 19th, 2007 at 9:43 am

I know, I commented on it. Very nicely I said that was a load of shit. He probably thinks we’re full of it too though, but I do try my best to be unbiased.

Dwight did remain composed when he got the T. That little shove was warented. You are right, the Celtics were lucky that Dwight didnt start retaliating or things could have gotten ugly. I must say though, I liked that attitude that he showed.

  7. Anders says:

    November 19th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

I agree, and I like that he stayed contained. Definately a first class guy.

  8. Damien Nielsen says:

    November 19th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

I think that is the first time I’ve ever heard someone refer to Dwight as “barking or jawing”. As far as I can tell, Dwight is one of the most respected players in the game. The quote you have above, isn’t describing a guy that other players would like too much.

    You know what, never mind…

First off, Dwight Howard is the “new Shaq”. I didn’t think it was a secret. What rock have you been living under?

Second, watch the game. If Dwight is pushing and shoving, it’s because everyone out there is doing the same to him. Are you mad because he’s “competing”? Or, maybe you’re just mad because he’s not on your team, and he put a nice hurting on KG last night. Oh yeah, then there’s the fact that KG is at the end of his career, and Dwight is at the beginning; jealous maybe?

Third, so he’s doing whatever he wants and getting away it. Oh, and he gets EVERY call. Again, go back and watch the game. If you can tell me a player that is taking more contact and punishment than Dwight I’d be interested to know.

The fact of the matter is, the NBA hasn’t seen a center like Dwight in a while. He’s physical, and why shouldn’t he be? He’s been letting opposing teams off the hook in the past years. Now he’s older (21). He’s got some new low post moves, and he not feeling as guilty to use his strength. He’s playing how he’s supposed to play, period.

Brendan, I think I know the play you were talking about. It was in the 2nd half, Dwight was backing Pollard down. There was a bump, then Dwight turned right (hack), then Dwight spun back left (hack)…no call. I guess he doesn’t get EVERY call.

  11. Anders says:

    November 19th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

Haha, I knew you’d get a kick out of that Damien. This little discussion got me thinking. If we were going to send 5 guys to play all out cage ball from the league, who are the 5 toughest players by position?

    My picks are:

    PG: Steve Nash
SG: Baron Davis (I know technically he’s a PG, but can’t think of anyonelse)
    SF: Kobe Bryant
    PF: Carlos Boozer
    C: Dwight Howard

Do you guys have any opinions

  12. Damien Nielsen says:

    November 19th, 2007 at 7:20 pm

    I just saw the response…

I’ll have to go over and check out the Celtics section tonight sometime. I’m not up for arguing with unreasonable people at the moment.

The fact of the matter is, if you want to criticize Dwight’s offensive game, go for it. If you want to criticize his free throw shooting, sure why not. But when someone is actually trying to call “Mr. Nice Guy” and whining crying bully who always gets his way; COME ON.

I think if I was to comment over there about it right now, I’d just call them jealous.

What even makes it more humorous to me is that I imagine this is coming from a Boston fan. So are you telling me Pierce, KG, and Allen haven’t all gotten “the treatment” before?

From my point of view, the officiating was pretty bad last night. Was I the only one who was sick of seeing Pierce flailing around? There were two times, I swore I thought he was going to pound his little fists on the court and start crying.

  13. Damien Nielsen says:

Anders; I’m going to have to think about that one…

I came down from Boston for the game and was totally blown away…by the piped in noise and balloon-clappy things. Are you kidding me? The whole place is a big distraction – from the gimmicky cheerleaders to ‘puff’ the magic dragon. I guess we are just used to a more traditional environment for our basketball than you Mickey Mouse Club fans. In Boston, we actually chant “D Fense!,” its not piped in through a speaker system.

On another note, the Magic looked good, H.T. hit some big 3’s down the stretch. We’ll see you guys again and hopefully we’ll have a different officiating crew (for both our sakes). It was defensive three seconds almost every time down the court on Howard but they barely called it and they called far too many fouls on the C’s in the first half.

But the real point is, you fans and your arena are like a bad episode of The Goof Troop.

  15. David says:

    November 19th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

The comments by Magic fans here are funny. Why are you guys whining about the Celtics? Sounds like an inferiority complex to me.

So what if the Celtics only beat one team over .500?–it was actually their most convincing victory of the year (40 point lead at one time).

And the NBA “giving” the Celtics a “cake” schedule? Maybe those teams are not doing well now, but by most expectations, Toronto, New Jersey (2x), Washington, Denver, Miami and even Orlando would not fall into the “cake” category. Also, Toronto (5-5), New Jersey (4-6), Washington (4-5) and Indiana would not be under .500 had they not lost to the Celtics.

Finally, didn’t the Magic also only beat one team over .500, and by Magic fans accounts, that team (Boston) is not all that good anyway!

  16. Brendan Sonnone says:

    November 19th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

David- Inferiority complex? Why because the Celtics finally have a “better team?” That makes no sense. Sounds to me like sour grapes for the Magic beating the “best team in the leauge” last night. Orlando also faced Toronto (won) New Jersey (won) and Washington (won) so we took credit for that sub .500 record as well…oh and Cleveland, the defending EC champs. IIRC, our two losses came against teams that have had over 50 wins the past two seasons, so yeah, Orlando has had the harder scheduele. The fact that Boston fans have came out of the shadows is funny, where were you guys a couple of years ago? Personally, i wasnt discrediting Boston at all, just the teams whining, complaining to the refs and their countless cheap shots…

GDev- I have to agree with you, the Amway Arena isnt a conducive place to watch a game. However, when ever a Boston fan talks about the arena, I think about this fat guy crying after the Magic beat the Celtics in 94-95 to shut down the Garden…priceless, at least the celtics never made our fans cry

  17. David says:

    November 19th, 2007 at 11:29 pm

No sour grapes–I’m not upset at all that Orlando beat the Celtics. If that were the case, I’d have ’sour grapes’ 30, 40, maybe 50 times a year–life’s too short for that many sour grapes. I simply stated that it ’sounds’ like an inferiority complex, but there’s nothing inferior about the Magic team or its fans.

“Best team in the league” in my opinion is the Spurs.

True, the Magic contributed to the sub-500 record of those teams. I’m just pointing out the same for the Celtics.

The record of teams in past seasons is completely irrelevant to how good or bad a team is this season.

“Out of the shadows”? Where have I been the last couple of years? I have a long history of posting to the Celtics mailing list. If you don’t believe me, I can give you my username to check out for yourself. No fair weather fan here.

What team doesn’t complain to the refs? I doubt that there’s ever been one in the history of the league, including your Magic. And cheap shots? The Celtics may be physical, but I challenge the notion that they are dirty.

  18. ManchvegasBob says:

Hey from the Celtics17 board on MVN. You Magic fans have a great team this year. And I understand that Dwight Howard showed a lot of improvement over last year. He’s on the cusp of superstardom for sure. But if his only weakness if FT shooting, expect the same hackahoward strategy, because a ticky tacky foul on Howard would defeat the purpose of avoiding and1’s. It’s called basketball and no one gets free layups in the NBA or on playground for that matter.

December 23rd is the next match-up, and there’s one back in Orlando on January 27th, and that’s it unless they meet in the playoffs. See you in the Finals???

  19. Roper says:

  20. thebuldge says:

Both teams played great last night and the officiating was poor, but its only one game and celtics and magic fans both know they’re great teams and are both gonna make the playoffs where the W’s really matter.

I’m not a fan of either team, but from what I’ve seen Rondo is much better than Nelson, who really isn’t a PG at all. (I feel i can judge both players cause I’ve seen all of the Celtics and Magic games this year, gotta love NBA league pass)

  21. johnnymostsghost says:

I watched the game and agree it was a playoff atmosphere but you whiners can’t ignore the stat sheet. 44 shooting fouls for the Magic and 26 for the Celtics who by the way had Pierce shool you guys with his bad back and Garnett playing with flu like symptoms. Dwight Coward handled himself in a respectable way by protecting himself but hey what’s with his jersey grabbing and shoving. It will all come out in the playoffs. I might add Dwight is on my fantasy team so bitter sweet. RIP Orlando!

Listen all you magic clowns, especially you Branden. First of all, pay your respect to three hall of fame players you had the honor of watching the other night in KG, PP and Ray Allen. These guys are not “punks” and in fact is the team you will witness defeat your beloved Mickey Mouse Magic in the playoffs if you guys can make it to the Eastern Conference Finals where we will be. And get your facts straight. If you want to talk about poor officiating and chap fouls your arguement doesnt make sense since you guys took 44 FT to our 26, so the officiating actully helped you guys. And how can you possibly feel good about blowing a 20 point second half lead to a team that now believes they WILL beat this team next time around…good luck with Rashad Lewis and his 6 year $118M contract as he plays when he wants…dogs.

No need ot call anyone punks, etc. This is what playoff basketball is like, not complaining that your best player keeps getting fouled. Get ready for it because more teams will do this to DH.

    November 20th, 2007 at 10:37 am

Welll, for those of you who didnt post anything that could get someone fired, thank you, at least you have some class about you.

I understand that DH was getting fouled and I always have been an advocate that if you’re going to foul someone, foul them hard. Where I think you guys are missing the point is as Anders said earleir, it is an unspoken rule that you gont grab, push or pull anyone when they are in mid air. you dont grab jersey’s , and if you’re going to pull someone down with two hands, you cant do it that aggresivley. The refs cant allow that to happen but they did and in return, Howard protected himself. Im sorry but thats basketball 101, you dont take shots at a player, and thats what the “punks” Scalabrine, Perkins and Pollard, were doing.

-Boston Realist, well your credibility went out the window….three HOF? Defintley one, maybe two but its a long shot. LOL, than goodness Im not that biased As for Rashard, yeah that money will kill us down the road, I agree, but dude isnt slacking on the court, he respects Dwigth and is reguraly giving a good effort.

johnnymostgost- I dont want to hear about a bad back and flu like symptoms. Pierce played fine and Garnett had enough energy to whine all night. You make a good point with teh fouls, but Boston was intentionally trying to foul Dwight every time he touched the ball. One play, Pollard was surprised because he hacked Dwight on purpose and the ref missed the call (what a surprise) and Pollard stood still because he thought the play as over. Your guys were trying to hack the Magic, violantely at times and we got mroe foul shots as a result, although some T’s should have been called.

The buldge- thanks for an unbiased post. Im not sure about Rojndo/Nelson, but Rojndo is younger and will improve more, so I guess he has Jameer there.

Roper- Considering Orlando ahs the second best record in the NBA and beat the team with the best. As for barely beating them, I think Orlando let them back into it, they have had that problem this year, but they will only get better with a new coach and new key players. By the end of the year, if Orlando goes up by 20, most teams arent coming back.

ManchvegasBob- A matchup between these two in the eastern cofnerence finals is very plausible and I think a ncie rivalry has been developed, the rest of the games should be fun to watch.

David- I believe you David, you seem like a good guy. I do disagree with you that Boston was playing dirty. Two ngihts ago, they were. Like I said, there is a difference beteewn a tough foul and a cheap one, and Boston crossed that line, IMO

Only time will tell whether all 3 will be HOF players and at their current projections (especially once they all win a title together) they should be HOFamers. For you to say that only 1 maybe 2, is your opinion, and not an arguement against someone’s creditbility…long way to go magic kingdom blogger.

And its only a matter of time untill Rashard dogs it you watch and see. when he wants to play he can be a top 25 player but its a matter of desire something that fuels KG and the Celts…good luck rest of the season..see you in the Jungle on 12/23

As for the sports fans. I was in Champs today and this guy walks in and says, “What are you doing with all these Yankee hats, burn ‘em all! Burn ‘em all! Where the (Bostonians favorite word) are all the (Bostonians favorite word) Red Sox hats?!”

Red Sox fans. You get a couple titles within the last 80 years and all of a sudden your the king of the block. I really wish you would’ve won more throughout the years so we didn’t have to here you cry and belly ache about how the Yankees buy all there players, and so on, and so on. Guess what you finally won a championship by doing just that, welcome to the block.

Celtics fans. You used to be GREAT (and to GDev, you’re a moron Red created that environment). In recent years you blew. Now you guys have a great team, and ALL OF A SUDDEN you guys are king kong again. Im sure the back and flu were factors, but I cant stand fans talking about injuries, not after what Orlando went through with Hill. after that, it seems like a flu and bad back in which you can play seem like little dings. Garnett wasnt that sick, he was jumping up and down pleading for fouls. When MJ and Dwade were sick, they didnt have enough energy to complain abuot calls, so too me, its a straw man arguement.

Anders. I like the Departed too, although it winning the Academy Award was actually redemtion for Good fellas not wining, but I digress. Bostonians can be loud and obnoxious, but they probably think were are wussies living in Orlando, so something has to give.

Oh and Fever Pitch, that was a good one too. God Jimmy Fallon is a great dramatic actor

I got to thinking about something you guys won’t like but in order to be considered elite you have to beat what you believe is elite. So obviously you know we are the real elite team when firing on all cylinders and at 100%. I always knew we were the better team. “WA! WA! WA!” Said the Magic fans even though their team continued to trudge to the charity stripe 46 times. (and I do mean charity). You guys should have got autographed Celtics towels while you could afford them before they whip you in the playoffs and the price goes up. Supply and demand you know it too!!!

Im not saying that Boston isnt better than Orlando or wont have a better season, but Orlando is amongst those ranks, no doubt.

And as far as the charity stripe…please, take off the green glasses, because Orlando wen to the foul line that many times because all Boston could do to stop Howard was foul him….and there were PLENTY of calls the refs didnt make when Howard was hacked down low. The team could have gone to the loine another 10-20 times, easily. Seriously, try being unbiased, it really helps. I was watching the game with my friends and they were pleading for calls, even when there werent any…I told them that it was the right call (or no call). I believe in being unbiased because it is how a true sports fan should be. Do I cheer for a certain team? Yes. Do I call out other teams? I will if they deserve it. But I watch the game as unbiaedly as possible and please dont complain about how many times Olrando went to the free throw line, because the truth is, Boston got away with plenty of calls. I wont argue that, because it is my opinion, but my opinion is unbiased…if you can offer one that isnt covered in clovers, then be my guest.
