Quick C-Webb update
I just came upon this article in the NBA headlines section of ESPN.com that nearly brought a tear to my eye: Chris Webber is reportedly considering signing a contract with Olympiacos of Greece.
“Two sources familiar with the offer told ESPN.com that Olympiacos was offering a two-year deal that would net Webber between $10 million and $12 million, which would make him the highest-paid American player in Europe.”
While he hasn’t signed anything yet, this offer would certainly look to be above and beyond what either the Pistons or Mavericks have proposed, at least as far as the length of the deal is concerned. Rumors had the Mavs only offering him a one-year deal (most likely for the full mid-level exception), when Webber has asked for a two-year contract. If it’s only about the money for him, then there’s a good chance he lands in Greece, but if it’s an NBA title that he truly covets, I’m not sure what the holdup is. The Mavs can offer him about as much money on a per-year basis as the amount the Greek team has just proposed (in the $5.5 million range), and he’d be on a team that has serious championship potential, probably even more so than his previous team in Detroit, which in my opinion has taken a step back compared to last season. Sure, he’d get an extra year of guaranteed money moving to Europe and would be one of the highest profile American athletes ever to play overseas (pending the arrival of Scottie Pippen). Even so, I don’t know why he’d pass up the opportunity to play a pretty substantial role for the Mavericks, especially with the team very thin in the frontcourt at the moment.
Supposedly he will made a decision by the weekend whether to accept the Olympiacos’ offer or wait and see what develops with his NBA suitors. If something happens, Matt and I will be here as always with our thoughts.
