George nixes J-Kidd trade

Okay, I’m a little flabbergasted right now. I really thought this was a done deal, but apparently it’s now as close to dead as it was a week ago. This is from an ESPN.com report:

“With the New Jersey Nets poised to complete a blockbuster deal to send Jason Kidd back to Dallas on Wednesday night, Mavericks reserve forward Devean George has unexpectedly exercised his right to block the trade, according to NBA front-office sources. Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the teams verbally agreed to the deal earlier Wednesday and were preparing to submit the trade for league approval when George informed the Mavericks that he wouldn’t consent to being included in the deal, which is his right based on a rare provision in his one-year contract.”

I had heard of this provision in George’s contract before all of this, but I never thought he would actually make use of it. I guess I was wrong.

Here’s some of what Eddie Sefko has to say:

“Whether or not this is just paranoia or the deal legitimately has fallen apart, it’s clear that both sides believed they were on the lip of the cup of a deal just a few hours earlier.”

Sefko doesn’t mention anything about George blocking the trade, only that when he asked Mavs owner Mark Cuban whether the proposed deal to land Kidd was done, Cuban responded, “No, I don’t think so.”

George was in the Mavericks’ starting lineup tonight against Portland, and DeSagana Diop has also gotten in the game even though both were included in the trade, which indicates to me that the trade isn’t a done deal.

This story is obviously not even close to being finished, so check back here for more developments.

*UPDATE* -  Here’s some more from ESPN.com’s report:

“Early Bird rights,” a provision earned by being in his second year and on his second contract with the Mavericks, made the move possible.

“We’re not trying to hold things up or be difficult, but just like teams make tough decisions all the time — about cutting players or making trades — they do what’s best for their team, and it’s my obligation to do what’s best for Devean,” his agent, Mark Bartelstein, said, according to The Associated Press.

“You don’t want to stop teams from doing their business, but we don’t feel like it makes sense at this time. He’s starting right now and things are going pretty good.”

I never thought I’d say this, but thank the lord that we have Devean George around to stop this.  As a sidenote, George is 0-for-7 from the field in 22 minutes so far against the Blazers, and Dallas is up 15 with about two minutes left in the third quarter.

I’ve been giving my takes on The NBA Source. Losing Diop for interior defense would deal the Mavs a huge blow. I think the Mavs would have to be desperate to pull off the deal. Are they?

I agree, this seems like a panic move by Cuban. Losing Diop is what kills me here, since he is Dampier’s only true backup at center. If Stackhouse is bought-out and no other team signs him for 30 days, then the Mavs could bring him back, and I wouldn’t feel nearly as bad about the trade.

If George doesn’t budge and continues to refuse to be included, they could still get it done with either Fazekas and Eddie Jones or Juwan Howard and Jones, but this guts our depth even more.

I really hope Cuban reconsiders this. I haven’t found anyone who thinks the Mavs are the winners in this deal.

Dude, you guys were gonna give up a serviceable swingman who is critical to what you guys do (Stackhouse), your best post defender in a big-man dominated West (Diop), a stud 24-year old who isn’t close to his prime and will definitely get better and better (Harris), and on top of that, TWO FIRST ROUNDERS for…

…a guy who has asked to be traded.

I doubt any other team had an offer that was anywhere close to that one. I know for a fact that the Cavs could only offer chicken shit for JKidd, so there was no competition there. But were those two first-round picks necessary? Did you have to give those up?!?! That was way, way over the top.

You should be thanking George. He is saving you and your bizarre owner from yourselves.

Amar, as far as I’m concerned, George is my hero even if he can’t shoot. Totally agree that they gave up way too much, and the two first rounders on top of it just made it almost ridiculous.

Since the Shaq trade, everyone has been saying the Suns were not good enough to win the championship…at least that is what they’re saying to try and justify the trade.

I think if any team should be saying that it should be the Mavs. Not only did they lose in the Finals the way they did (even though I thought it was fixed). But then they came back and got owned by the Warriors the following season. Why should anyone believe this team is a legit contender?

As for the trade, I don’t know if it’d make them a contender. Maybe-maybe not… All I know is Kidd would make Dirk, Howard, Terry, and company a lot better.

Devin Harris is a stud? What have I missed? I mean, he’s solid, and he’ll be 25 this month, but a stud?

Stackhouse already said publicly he’d be back in 30 days.

The loss of Diop could hurt some.

    Devean George is a scrub.

    Ager is a throw-in.

The two future 1st round picks throw me off a little. I mean, how long does Kidd have left? And once Kidd is gone, where would those picks end up falling?

Kidd’s age should be the main reason any Dallas fan wouldn’t want this deal to happen. The sad thing is I remember a few years back when Cuban didn’t want to give Nash a big contract at his age (Nash is younger than Kidd). Yet now, he’s willing to trade for Kidd, a guy who makes around 7 million more than Nash?

Desperation might be the right word.
