The Picksix: Tempered Excitement

Given the 11-to-10 odds used to bet on most individual games in Las Vegas, it is worth remembering that one needs to win more than 52.3 percent of wagers simply to break even.

This comes to mind only so that we can resist the temptation of beginning to get giddy after a perfect 5-0 effort on Sunday. Team TAB now sits at 102-94 on the season and looks primed to get rolling, perhaps to the point of being able to drop the ‘six’ from the title of this segment. But of course, that record leaves us at just a shade above 52 percent thus far, meaning that there is still plenty of work to be done.

So rather than starting the party now, we’ll roll up our sleeves and get right back to business with a seven-game slate for Monday night.

Utah (-4.5) over NEW YORK – It remains our contention that Saturday’s matinee at the Garden told us more about the Bulls than it did the Knicks. This Knicks team remains not very good.

NEW ORLEANS (-11.5) over Minnesota – The Wolves come off blowing an 18-point halftime lead at home to the Hawks. Though most of them probably should have gotten used to this type of shenanigan in Boston, the youngsters won’t respond well.

Washington over DALLAS (-12.5)
– Simply too many points to give for what has been a very erratic Dallas team as of late.

San Antonio (-6.5) over SACRAMENTO
– Kicking butt as of late. No reason to hop off the wagon here. Especially even if jinxing them has its upside: Agitating pal David Southern Hospitality Incarnate Thiessen of Spur of the Moment. Always count me in for that.

Orlando (-4.5) over PORTLAND
– The Magic are simply playing too well right now, taking out virtually any and all comers from the picture. Not enough points to make us fall back in love with a Portland team that looked very weak in its last two home games, played against the powerhouses from New Jersey and Sacramento.

Phoenix (-5.5) over GOLDEN STATE
– The Warriors have picked up the production over the past week and a half, but sometimes teams go up against entities bigger than they are. The Suns are hot right now. Period. Also, take the over in this game. Don’t bother looking at what the number is. Just take the over. Trust us.

Houston (-5.5) over LA CLIPPERS – The Rockets finally got back on track with a pummeling of the Nuggets at home this weekend. Money from the Parking Lot’s Willy Po says the Clips will get wiped out at home tonight. And what he says goes on the Clips.

Last night: 5-0
Season: 102-94
