Van Horn to rescue the Jason Kidd deal?
In an odd twist of events, Devean George is exercising his early bird provision in his contract to veto the Jason Kidd trade. I didn’t know they gave those perks to scrubs who rode Kobe and Shaq’s coat tails in L.A.? ESPN’s Marc Stein has the scoop.
This isn’t quite Matt Geiger stopping Allen Iverson from going to the Pistons though (although Jerry Stackhouse was involved in that one too). Devean George is not a deal breaker. The Mavs can pull an Aaron McKie on the non-coaching Keith Van Horn and sign him to a one-year deal to make it all work. How about that - Van Horn going back to the Nets? Chances are that the Nets would then buy that contract out too.
I’m not sure if Devean George’s veto would then keep Antoine Wright in a Nets uniform, but it will be intriguing to see how badly the Mavericks want to get a deal done. They can do it without George, but might be having second thoughts of trading away their best answer to Shaq, Duncan, and Gasol in the halfcourt. Yes, I’m talking about DeSagana Diop - the Ben Wallace / Dikembe Mutombo for the big man starved.
Somewhere, Shaq is smiling, then frowning, and maybe giving George a call. I have no idea if they were cool in L.A. Dallas is about to make a panic move…

Cuban has said that he wouldn’t involve Van Horn in any trade, but then again, he also said that the team wasn’t talking to the Nets, and we now know that they sure were.
I’m not sure who to believe at this point.

BTW: it’s not a no-trade clause, it’s called an “Early Bird Provision,” which George has in his contract because he is in his second year and on his second contract with the Mavs.

Thanks Joe. Correction made. Quite a day though. Still, I wouldn’t believe anything Cuban is saying…

Quite a day, indeed. I’ve run out of emotion…
It does feel good to see the Mavs get a convincing win for once, though. They beat Portland by 20 tonight without Stack, Harris and Howard, and with George going 0-for-11 shooting in the starting lineup.
Maybe this win will be enough to convince Cuban that Kidd won’t be necessary…
…not likely

Good clarification indeed, Joe. The George issue likely confused plenty of observers, especially as Kobe Bryant is the only player in the league known to have an actual no-trade clause in his contract.
Good work staying on the story, Jon.

Thanks Steve. You convinced me that Diop doesn’t suck! That Harris kid ain’t too bad either.

No problem, glad I could help. If you’re interested in more in Diop, feel free to check out today’s Daily Babble over on the front page at CelticsBlog.
